Hi there ...

I'm looking to buy my first Ovation, I have my eyes on an S771 and a 2771LX but I don't know how these 2 models stack up against each other. Are they a similar level of instrument or is there a gap in quality/materials/tone?

Both are within my budget, so any advice would be really welcome.

Thanks

Welcome Byrdman.

The S771 was once the 'most affordable' US made Ovation you could buy.
It has a mid-depth bowl with no 'Bling'... But it does have "A" Bracing which makes it sound great when played straight acoustic.

The 2771LX has the Contour Bowl with LX bracing, which also sounds great.
It also has the OP-Pro pre-amp which is nice. And you can get it in a variety of colors.

[Click those two links for a side-by-side comparison.]

If affordability is not the issue, I would get the 2771LX.
You can get yourself a Special Balladeer S771 later, once you start collecting O's. :D

For that sort of money you could probably pickup a 2003 or 2007 Collector!!! :D

Dweezil will definitely know better than me what the prices are like over-yonder.

Help your mate out there Dweezil.

I don't really know (or bother with) the round hole Ovations, they don't do anything for me. The 97C is exempt for obvious reasons.

Why/how did you settle on those two Byrdman? And what prices have you been quoted for each?

As for tone, go and try them!

Woah, getting close to 1000 posts! Be warned Byrdman this is a dangerous place to frequent.

Hi Dweezil

Only reason for focusing on these 2 models are that were suggested to me as both being a good quality intro to Ovation. But I'm open to suggestions, the range is so extensive that it's difficult to know where pitch in when you're flying blind.

I have an new American 2771LX on offer at £520 and a "little used" S771 at £300. What do you think?

Hi,

as I said I cannot comment on those, I prefer the look of the epaulet guitars ( see mine here : Ovations ) but for example I picked up a mint condition 2000 Collector for £325 yesterday ( 2000 Collector )

I saw a 2003 Collector go for just £300 last week, now that is a *KILLER* Ovation, one that's hard to beat in my option. But I guess it's down to what ticks your boxes. I would buy second hard as you can get some bonkers deals. Hope that helps.

My first was an S771 and it played great. I sold it to my bro-in-law to get my 1778T and when we played them together, the T blew it away for unplugged sound.

But I really liked playing the Balladeer.
