Location: Santa Monica | Howdy.I`m the latest newby,so I`ll start by saying
thank`s for your time and information.Anyhoo,I`m
wondering if a mudduck like myself would really
notice the differnce between da "CHEAPY MODEL" VS
the solid toppers?.I`m just a plinker and never
plan on plugging in much.I scoped out the CC057
cause it`s only three billies and to me it really
sounds good,plus the ballideer is three billies
more.One more thing,has anyone got a picture of
the "CC057 HONEY BURST"?.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Inmy opinion it would wrong to group all ovations into two rigid lots that are completely different - ply tops vs. wood tops. Remember that we're talking about a natural material here that will vary from one guitar to the next "exact same" guitar. Better to think that all Ovation tops for a continuous spectrum of performance. The definition of "performance" is pretty fuzzy. As a rule the ply tops will be grouped towards one end of the scale and the solid tops towards the other end. But there is overlap in the middle. Everyones ears are different also. On top of that, although the top is the most impostant in my opinion, there are other factors that effect "performance". There are certainly some play tops that to MY ears sound/perform better than some solids.
If YOU can hear a 3 billi difference between the 057 and the ballideer, AND you've got the money, then by all means go with the one that sounds "better" to you. But if they sound the same or similar, you are paying the extra 3 billies just for the sake of knowing you have a solid top. To a lot of people it would not be worth it.

Welcome to the club.
First I think most here agree that the most important opinion is your own. If you find a guitar that you like, no matter what model, you will have our blessing and support.
That being said, there is a reason the better tops cost more. You may be "just a plinker", but you still want your efforts to be presented well. I suggest that you narrow it down to 3 or 4 selections, then have someone play them for you. Standing in front of the guitar is the best place to judge it's sound. That's how I wound up with the guitar I have now. Since you say you will not be plugging in much it is even more important that you are comfortable with the sound.
Now...about being a "plinker". The right instrument can go allong way to insure that you don't get stuck in the "plinker" phase forever. Not that there is anything wrong with plinkers. We are all one to some degree. |

Location: Asheville, North Carolina | I agree with StandingOvation. I do feel however that since Ovations don't receive the inherent benefits of wooden back and sides which do age. It's pretty much a well known fact that solid wood changes for the better tonewise over time, where laminated doesn't. It also seems to be more alive,flexible and responsive if you will. I will say the plus side of the Ovation glass roundback is that it works better with a laminated top than an *all* laminated wooden guitar....But just as StandingOvation stated each is different. I've played some laminated guitars that had better tone and response than some all solid wood guitars! Nothing like a solid natural AAA Sitka Spruce top with lots of silk and some claw!

pick up the cheapy,and when I get some serious
hardcore callouses on the fingies,I`ll pull the
trigger on the "real deal".
Why dose the solid tops sound better with age?.
Do the cheapies fall apart or what?.

family.
PS:I was very saddend to hear about the members
unfortunate tragity this morning.Life is truly
short and we must live it to the fullist we can.

Location: Asheville, North Carolina | Yeppers...there is nothing wrong with a less expensive guitar! And Ovation Celebrity's are a great value and as I said Ovations work very well with laminated tops... As for your question about why solid wood ages better...well its a long tutorial so I will try to be brief. Solid wood has small cells or pockets that run all the way through the wood. These over time and *playing* dry out or cure, stiffening the top and increasing resonance in various flex points giving it a more mature complex tone color. The amount of the change has many variables since each top has its own physical properties. Laminated tops can't mature this way because of the layers of wood and glue between these layers. But remember all laminates are not created equal. It depends on the manufacturer. Martin for instance uses a 3 ply with a mahogany center core.

His wife says he's been playing a lot more, which is understandable because the action is so sweet. He was saying yesterday that he had never believed that a guitar could make a person a better player until he started playing Big Red.

and if it looks funky,I can swap it out for the
NATURAL witch looks fantastic anyway.$375.00 with
the 8217 case out the door.Now if I can just stay
off E-BAY till next saturday I`ll be okay.I do
alot of boatting in the ocean and was wondering
what the salt-air dose to the hardware and elec-
tronics?.It wouldn`t actually get wet,but that
mist in the air is allways there.Welp thanks

My "boat/beach" guitar has been a Korean Ultra-12.
The stacked-knob pre-amp (which will soon be extricated) never really worked well when I bought it, so it was never an issue. I'm more concerned with the gold tuners . . . |
