I was wondering if anyone could make a recommendation as to upgrading/replacing the neck pickup on a standard telecaster copy. My current pickup, is, as it always ways, muddy to the extreme, and I'm looking to get a less muddy, brighter, clearer, perhaps more overdriven, sound. With my bridge pickup, I have plenty of tele twang and it sounds great.
Thanks.

Can't help with your lipstick tube problem. But, I'm considering a set of active pups for my stratocopy...idea being less crappy sound with a bit more sustain. Maybe they make some for tele's. or not. I dunno. Anyone know anything about active pups that wants to share?

I'm a Seymour Duncan fan. Go here, and you can check out a lot of different options and I think there are also some sound files ...

Call Lindy Fralin

http://www.fralinpickups.com

After talking to you, he can wind you what you need.

The problem is... getting "bright" and powerful is hard to get mutually co-existant in a single coil pickup. Lindy will custom wind just about anything, and add/modify it if you need that after you try it out.

Also... just for my own 2c worth, the Texas Tele neck pickup may be what you're after.

Also might want to try:

http://www.billlawrence.com/

He makes a neck pickup and a bridge pickup for teles. Price is reasonable. You can call and talk to either Bill or Becky.

I think a Seymour Duncan hot rail will fit, I have an old single rail on my Mustang that sounds great, but a humbucker will fit, or a dimebucker.

That's why I suggested the two sites to you. If you search the tele and pickup subforums, you'll learn what you need to make an informed decision for yourself.

Everyone has their own opinion, and most will suggest what they have. Since there's dozens of pickups available, including other Fender pickups, you'll be better off learning as much as you can and making your own decision.

If you'll be paying a tech to swap the pickup(s), then you'll want to make sure you're making the best decision for yourself. If you're doing the swap yourself, and you don't mind selling on eBay, then you'll rarely be hurt by trying out different pickups.

P.S. Try playing around with your tone button and amp settings first. Stock Fender neck pickups are very susceptible to slight tone and amp adjustments.

I want to thank you guys again for the recommendations, I appreciate it. I posted here because I respect the opinions of the members and I sincerely wanted to know what they think.
I think after 20 plus years I'm done fiddling with my tone knobs, and now is the time to extract this bad front tooth on this otherwise perfect smile.

I've narrowed it down to bill lawrence 280's, dimarzio twang king or fender texas specials. I will consult with my guitar guru here in NYC.

Well, six weeks ago I ordered the bill lawrence pick up. It arrived today! It really is made in a boutique shop, wound by hand. I'll post a review after install it. Thanks again for the advice.
