A repeat of the Letterman peformace aired last night. As much as I tried to watch it the first time, I fell asleep and missed it. This time, as tired as I was, I forced myself to stay awake. Holy Cow! am I glad I did. I see why Dad is so proud. Incredible! Hope someday she plays close to here (30 miles from anywhere,Indiana).

Hey Bill, Where are you in Indiana? I'm from Carmel(don't hold that against me) and a Ball U alumni.

as i said in a post under the acoustic cafe thread, i think kaki is one of the reasons music and the instruments we use evolve. she is a very gifted person and a gift to musicians and listners as well. when she played i watched the crowd, and there was not a sound except when someone knocked over a glass(that elicited dozens of furrowed brows). everyone was paying close attention because kaki's music, like an interesting story plot, takes unexpected turns and twists that all wind up making sense (it did to me anaway). music is tension and release and using her percussivie, harmonic and often droning open tuning style, kaki seems to know how to bend the listener's emotion and keep them following.

kudos to kaki for putting it on the line and playing on the edge. and kudos to her family who must have played an important part in nourishing their mutual dream. i hope to meet kaki and her family someday, maybe here in mexico where she would be most welcome to join the local music fun (mi casa su casa, kaki, and the guest casa is loaded with guitars and related toys). in the mean time i will enjoy listening to the 2 cd's i bought at NAMM after hearing her for the first time i'll enjoy even better telling a new listner that "that is one person playing".

there is no right or wrong when it comes to personal taste. i can't argue with people aren't as impressed with kaki's compositions as i am. all seem to agree she is one hell of a technician, capable of playin what two or more different musicians often do all by herself. percussion, rythm and lead. one thing for sure is that many great people, including musicians are topics of discussion. play "hey good lookin'" and you might get a round of applause. think, act, compose or play outside of the box and the entire spectrum of opinion is sure to follow.

the fact that musical mavericks evoke discussion about what they are doing means people are thinking---defining----learning---and ultimatly understanding better what music means to them. it would be hard to really listen to someone like kaki without it causing you to think about how and what YOU play. i wouldn't be surprised if that isn't an important goal of this surprising young woman.

Bill (beatlejuice), I checked her current tour schedule and she makes one Indiana appearance:

2/27/2005 Toast & Jam Music Club, Ft. Wayne IN

Strummin, if I'm not mistaken, you've waited quite a while, so enjoy that NYC KF show. She got discovered there, so it's always one of her favorite venues.

Russ, thank you for your kind and thoughtful words about her performance at NAMM. I for one respect your right to judgment about other musicians and musical philosophy in general. Puerto Vallarta sounds pretty damn fine to me! (We got hit by an ice storm this weekend).

After she left Anaheim, she went up the Central Valley and played a few shows on the way to the Bay Area. I ran across this interesting concert review from a little town 75 miles east of Santa Cruz:
