I believe that Noah had it correct in a correspondanse to me, this was to cover an access hole for truss rod adjustments (Kaman Bar) but it would have been structurally wrong to put a hole in the bowl that close to the heel mount. As we now know, the back access hole is the window to the Multi-hole's innerds.
Somewhere there may even be a proto body that was used!

I did it a long time ago, but I still think the pen work is technically good. Some of you can remember the good old days of the oft-clogging Koh-i-noor rapidographs. |
