Well, he wasn't that great a pilot.........

I never flew with him so I couldn't say what were his skills, but he was a pilot who thought he was above the law.

Several months before his death the FAA ordered him to surrender his license due to his violation of the waiver that forbade him from drinking after he got his DUI. During a biennial medical examination, he told the medical examiner that he drank a glass or two of wine per week. The doc reported it to the FAA and they yanked his license.

Due to his ego, he ignored them and continued to fly (illegally) anyway. Had he obeyed the FAA, surrendered his license and not flown, he'd probably still be alive today.

DanSavage - I seem to recall reading once that John was less than impressed with Ovations. Something about 'guitars should be made from wood'.

He said that to me after playing my 1621. Kinda half joking... but he was in love with his Taylor line by then.

It must have been you I read this from because I can find no reference to it online.

It rocks when you roll, Nancy :-)

Oh.. and I never bought gas from that guy, but I have a few guitars he had hanging around the station years ago.

I've posted it here before when the conversation turned to John, Dan. Really feel lucky to have known him. Decidedly different from his image.

He was my Idol. His music spoke to me in a way that no one else's did. His concern with the planet, conservation, and making this a better place, inspired me to work towards those goals too. I saw him at every concert he had here in Minnesota, and even though he died a horrible death, he was doing something he loved, flying. He had his problems, he was human, but he was a good man who positively influenced allot of people with his music and actions. And from what I hear, he was genuine and friendly to everyone he met.

I would LOVE to hear about you meeting him sometime Jonmark, that was always a Dream of mine.

@Jonmark Stone - "Really feel lucky to have known him. Decidedly different from his image."

I knew an artist out of northern Utah way back in late 60's early 70's who created some really (and I mean really) wild pieces. Paintings, assemblies, clothing.. all of it over-the-top bizarre, but also very cool and unique. Probably smoked the good stuff. Anyway, John Denver was one of his greatest admirers, and frequently bought his crazy work. So when I read what you said it brought a "decidedly different" grin to my face.

Damon.
Well... the flower child image he developed in the 70's had hardened some by the time I got to know him in the 90's. But I liked that. Extremely inteligent. Unassuming. We had some mutual friends in music, but we spent most of our time talking space and aviation.

Jonmark, I'm just goofing on his name at birth. I have no idea what he was like. I just know my aunt played his records on repeat when I was a kid... his and Elton's.

Take Me Home Country Roads was the first song I learned to play and sing. I think I was 8, maybe 9 yers old.

This is my old friend Mickey Newbury. I worked with him for 20 years. This custom SSB is encased at the Texas Country Music HOF.

None of those guitarists would have had Ovations to play without CHK:
