My condolences to the Kaman Family.
A true legend of our time. Charlie, Thanks for
re-inventing the acoustic guitar and bringing science to guitar making. He raised the bar and don't think we will ever see so much inovation to the instrument we love in such a short while.

Forty years ago this month, I bought my first "real" guitar. Paid $400.00 for it. My mother thought I was crazy; that was a lot of money then, when you consider a quarter's tuition at the University of Cincinnati was $140.00!

The guitar, of course, was an Ovation Balladeer. I picked it up and fell in love with it, and, thanks to Charlie Kaman, my perception of acoustic guitars was latered forever.

I still have that guitar, still play it at live gigs. It has aged like fine wine - much better than its owner has!

Charlie was a pioneer, an innovator, and, as many have said, a visionary. There has not been a revolution in acoustic guitar making before or since that has had as much of an impact on the world. My life has been enriched beyond words because Charlie wanted to build a better mousetrap - or in this case, a better guitar.

He'll be missed; his passing leaves behind a huge hole that can never be filled, and yet we are all better for his having been here. My condolences to Bill and the entire Kaman family.

Losing a parent is never easy no matter how long or great a life they had/led. I feel for you and your family Bill. He left a great legacy behind I know you are all proud. We typically take our axes for granted don't think of the great people behind them. Thanks Charlie for being behind our axes and helping us to play, hack, rock, or destroy a song you your awesome interpretation of the guitar. Thanks Bill for sharing your dad with us all.

So sorry bill.

Oh if a man tried
To take his time on Earth
And prove before he died
What one man's life could be worth
I wonder what would happen
to this world

Sincerest condolences to you and your family, Bill.

On this day, (Feb 3, 2011) I'll be playing at Cameron's O/M in Half Moon Bay. Will cover songs of Buddy, Ritchie, and Bopper. And I'll be playing them on my Ovation Custom Legend in memory of your dad.

Bill

The Wall Street Journal published this fine remembrance in yesterday's edition, Section A6. They headlined it "Helicopter Designer and Guitar Hero":

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704124504576118501841...

I am certain that my daughter Kaki's career as a professional guitarist was due in large part to the brilliance of Mr. Kaman. She began learning and developing her techniques as a teenager in 1996 on my Adamas II 1581-7. I gave it to her later that year, and she turned pro with it in 2002.

He was a giant in so many ways, and my family will always be grateful to him.
