"The only blemish... ...is a little bit of flat white paint on the edge of the very top of the headstock"

That would be the all too familiar "hit the ceiling when I took off the Ovation" mark!

Vaulted ceilings in the music room are a must.

Ahh, the good and bad points of having no SWMBO. My Les Paul was consolation for breaking up after a ten month romance that very nearly led to marriage. At least I was smart enough to wait long enough to discover the extent of her truthfullness. By the way I missed my prom ages ago.

The guitar is cleaning up very nicely. There are literally no flaws on this guitar other than the paint chipping on the back. The chips are very hard and brittle and I think that the bowl may have taken a blow to the back causing it to flex enough to cause the flaking. Either that or perhaps the paint never bonded to the bowl for some reason. Maybe the release agent which allows the bowl to be removed from the mold was not completely removed or something like that.

The electronics seem to work well after a quick check, at least the mono portion. I will have to make up a cable to check the stereo output. I don't know whether the battery is the original one or not but it still works. When was the last time you saw an Eveready Alkaline battery with the cat jumping through a red number 9?

The wall paint cleaned off of the tip of the headstock very cleanly and there are no dents or chips in the finish. I need to find some steel wool to take the patina off of the frets before I put new Elixer Nanowebs on it. The top polished up beautifully with absolutely no finish cracks and the bridge looks as if it had just been carved.

Even with the ancient strings on it, it just blows away my S771. The action is superb and I won't be making any adjustments at all. It did not come with a truss rod wrench.

The manual is interesting. No where in it is any mention of or pictures of Elite models. In the section on the stereo pre-amp it says that four of Ovation's premium models use the stereo pre-amp, the Custom Legend (1619), the Electric Classic (1613), the Electric Legend Ltd. (1651) and the Electric Custom Legend 12 String (1658). It appears as if the manual predated the 1537. Besides the picture of Glen Campbell there is a picture of Al Dimeola. I'm not sure when he became an endorser of Ovation. The manual number inside the back cover in the lower right is 7901044.

When were the Elite models first introduced and is this the original Elite model?

When will the gallery be back up and running?

Rick,

If you do a search of 1537's going back to the beginning of this year, you'll find a ton of info that I got from Nick Mackin, the guy at Ovation who was respondible for the 1537's.

Do you happen to remember the title? I would really like to read that. After doing a search for 1537s I ended up with tons of entries. Why was I suprised?

Look also for the "New Guitars" thread. That was the one I remember from sometime ago. I searched under "Mackin".

Sorry Norseman, but I know if you had won I would have liked to hear all about it. I'm not trying to rub it in. The description didn't really say just how good a condition this guitar is in.

By the way I considered that $700 would have been an excellent deal. My maximum bid was $635.51 which would have allowed you to beat me, pay shipping and still have it for less than $700. I really thought that your maximum bid was probably about $650. I was a little surprised when I won.

Rick...relax bro, I'm only "funnin" with yea! Absolutely no hard feelings...like I said earlier, I was way over my head even bidding...In a way, I was a bit relieved when I found I was outbid (waaaay too much 'xplainin to do to my wife if I had won! ). I was not even home to see the end of the auction, and left in peace with what would happen.

I am truly excited for you, so please don't take my posts that I am upset...nothing could be further from the truth!

Norse, there can't be many out there who have had to do more explaining to their wives than me after buying guitars. After awhile it gets easier. OK Dave probably has to explain more to his wife, but he's had way more practice and we know his wife has to be a saint.

I just got back from reading that old post HOLY COW! was that a long thread! I'm not going to even think about bringing up the number of 1537s question again. After doing the original search, then reading the one I was looking for, and then going through 5 pages on this one, I've come to the obvious conclusion that the 1537 has been a favorite discussion around here for a long time. My next question is to Ovation ... When are they gonna consider a reissue? And would they consider doing one with one of those cool carved walnut headsocks ??? (: (: (:

Holy Smokes! you really scored big-time on that one. I hope the Norseman does that well on his quest also.
