More to follow.

Well Jeff, I played your guitar tonight. Brad (Slipkid) brought it over to my house. It's quite a piece of work. Looks like the entire back is one solid block of mahogany that was carved into a bowl shape. I wish I had a larger set of calipers to measure the bowl thickness.

At first I thought it was an Ovation neck but then we saw subtle differences in the shape of the headstock and the laminated overlay which were different. Brad told me it was made by a luthier in the Phillipines. It looks like he was quite a craftsman. The shape of the bowl looks like an exact duplicate of a Ovation shallow bowl. I can only imagine a determined asian woodworker, limited to hand tools and maybe a band saw laboring to duplicate an Ovation. He came pretty close. The guitar has tons of character and certainly makes me respect the efforts of it's maker. In all fairness though it sounds like a shallow bowl, but it really sounds decent when you get right in front of it, a trait of most Ovations.

Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us.

hey Brian,
Very glad you got your hands on it. I too, really appreciate the work that went into it. If folks had the chance to see the luthier's shop (ehh, hut) they would verrry impressed. I wouldn't call it modern...maybe "Bronze Age"

As stated, it ain't gonna win any sound awards...I was travelling pretty extensively in Asia at the time and playing in my hotel rooms and such, so a "not so loud" guitar was perfectly suited for my use.

Throw a (sound hole) pick-up in it and try it out...It has never been amped in any fashion!!!

I tuned up and played the wooden roundback two nights ago at BrianT's house. Picked it up over two days later...still in tune.

Well...she was an object of great interest at the open mic last night. No, sorry to say she did not make it to the stage. But while I was up there I spoke of her history and future. She was passed around the crowd and admired for, as Jeff says, "what she is".
I heard a couple people say, "I didn't know Ovation made a wooden bowl!".

As folks get this in hand, give a thought as to what kind of electronics you think would work well, if installed in it....

post your thoughts here...I might make a project of it when (if ever) she returns to Front Royal.

I re-enforced the box. It's boxed and ready to go out Monday. I'll throw in a copy of the "traveling trinket" that I send along with the book.
As the roundback travels, and with Jeffs okay, what the guitar could really use is some better tuners. A couple people who played it made that comment. Maybe someone has an extra set.
Also, I have had a lot of fun. I have shown it around and told it's story. People have thought it was a very cool thing to do.
A disposable camera is going with it. I have some interesting digital pics to post but I am having all kinds of 'puter trouble. I can't get my almost 9 year old system off of 16-bit color. Can't find my a Adobe Photo Deluxe disc to reload it. Kodak disc will not open. My new system will be up & running on the 26th. Then...look-out!

Brad,
Thank you for showing her a good time and taking such good care of her. Great first stop on the tour and I will eagerly await the pics till you are up and running with the new system...wouldn't you know it, I will be on the road then until the 30th.

You and the others are right, the tuners are crap, but they were the best we could get our hands on at the time (remember this guitar was made in Lapu-Lapu city on the island of Mactan, though famous as the island where Magellean justifiably met his violent demise, I defy anyone to find it on a map)... If anyone feels inclined to put other tuners on, I will reimburse for the cost of the tuners...but please, Weaverlys are not necessary!

Again, Brad thanks. I am pleased that you enjoyed her stay and hope she spreads a smile or two along her future travels.

Jeff...Was the bridge an off the shelf item or do you think it was also handmade?

Brad,
Honestly, I could not say for certain.

I do believe, as with the neck/ headstock, it was handmade. These guys have a freakish talent for imitation. That's a compliment.

Funny thing...and for those who have not been able to travel in Asia...Philippino (Filipino) muscians are in great demand all over Asia. They have an uncanny ability to imitate western music which is very popular, not only amoung tourists. More than once I was in complete disbelief as I listened to a cover of John Denver, the Eagles , Fleetwood Mac etc...
