Figure in to the final price about $250 and a trip to the factory, and you'll have a very nice guitar. That's a big crack, but is does follow the dark line in the grain that also shows in the bookmatching on the other side of the top. It might be a good idea to ask about the action. My 1537 is getting close to needing a neck re-set.

Mine is spot on perfect, never been adjusted (at least in the last 12 years that I've owned it) and lives with medium gauge strings. If the guitar in this auction can be bought for under $400, the factory could do good things with it. While it's there, you might consider having the new 2 knob electronics installed (built for the reissue Adamii).

If, If, and If I win this 1537 I will probably bring it up to the factory to repair that crack, possibly by having the whole top refinished. (and having fretboard cleaned as well) Then I will put it up for sale here at my cost of buying and fixing. I have one, one is more then enough for me. of course I have to win it first  peace, mike

Spread the wealth so to speak. Just a thought. I'm not talking about myself here either, I bid...and I'm already out of the picture. Good luck either way bro! The finish crack is supposed to be sealed. In fact, someone could possibly mitigate (sand & buff) it if it bothered them. Don't want you to lose the opportunity with the auction but maybe someone here should consider getting a great "player" for a fantastic price. I have held off pushing it up because I would basically be adopting it for a future home.

The action varies with the seasons: 3/32" in the summer (perfect) and 4/32" in the winter (tad high). Truss rod adjustments will lower the action in the winter, but then the guitar frets out at about the 11th fret. Also the floating fingerboard extension touches the guitar's top in the summer and causes some buzzing (I keep a thin guitar pick there in the summer). I love the sound of the guitar, but my 1619 is less tempermental and is easier to play. I intend on bringing the guitar to the factory at the next OFC Tour and leaving it for an evaluation and estimate. The fretboard and frets need some reconditioning also. Fugot: That's the nicest thing that I've read at this site in a long time. I really hope you win the auction. Note to other OFC members-don't bid against Fugot.

If it was a couple weeks later, I might be able to sneak it past my wife. If you get it, let's talk before you send it off to the factory. I might be happy for awhile with a cracked 1537.

Joined: August 2003 Posts: 4619 Location: SoCal | Problem with an auction like this is bidders back off and the one bidding gets outbid by $5.00. Then, the guys who backed off but would have bid more lose out. What is this guitar worth? $300, $400, $500, $600?? I believe the minimum that it will go for is $450-500 or more. Remember, this isn't a Celeb...a good condition guitar could go for $1,100-1,200. So, if you want it, determine what it is worth to you and bid. Let the highest bid win. Only fair with the bidders and for the seller.

EDIT: On the other hand, if I know Mike wants it, and is willing/able to go higher than I, why drive the price up needlessly?

I like your earlier thoughts...grab it cracked and repair it when the time is more politically correct (graduation day - maybe????)

Joined: January 2005 Posts: 640 Location: boulder | Hey all, first let me apologize to any and all I might have offended by bidding on this 1537. I bid what i think is a fair and moderate amount for this guitar within 10 minutes of it being listed (just luck). I bid what I did because I thought that it was a fair amount for this guitar. I was not trying to drive price up by any means. My lesson learned is not to be so impulsive. secondly, if I win listing (and that is still a big if) I will offer it here to OFC'ers and give the choice of as is or with repair cost. I do not mind driving it up to factory to let them look at it and have them give me an estimate to what they think needs to be done (if anything). Thirdly, Bid what you want. Bid what you think it is worth. Bid what you can. I am not asking anyone to not bid. I bid what I think it is worth to me. These pups are not cheap anymore and if this sells for less then $537 I would be surprised. Really surprised. So there you have it. peace mike

Maybe if I'd have been buying Ovations instead of Porsches, I'd have the collection built up. Once I have a 1537, I'll move to the next one on the list. I also enjoy the shopping part of this. It's amazing that my wife doesn't understand that. I would really worry if I thought there wouldn't be another one out there, but the last few months have indicated otherwise. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my other purchases. I'll just wait until the time is right.

The guy started the bidding at $850 and no one from the OFC went after it. I thought it would be a great guitar for a trade down the road. What color Porsches do you have?

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 12754 Location: Boise, Idaho | Congrats, Mike. I'll quit whining about my financial situation. It is trivial compared to several others. I just got one kid through college on a full ride from the State of Idaho. The second had to go to private school. A $14,000 per year scholarship sounds great until you get the bill for the other $18,000. Sympathy aside, Noah, I only have one Porsche. I know everyone's heart bleeds for me. An Arena Red Boxster. It's kind of burgundy. I had 2 guards red 911's before. I wish I could have kept the 84. Great car and classic style. Unlike most, I drive them every day. Put snow tires on in the winter and find them very functional. Built to play with, not collect. If I sold it or just gave up golf, I could probably afford all the Ovations I wanted and would have to graduate to Adamas.

Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8307 Location: Tennessee | Welcome to the 1537 club Mike. I was lucky enough to find one from an OFC member about a year ago and you will not be disappointed. Hang in there Mark, yours will come around at the right time. My daily driver for the past 10 years has been a 1987 944, which is just about the most drivable Porsche I've owned. The one I wish I held on to was my red 1961 356B Super ... but the vintage car craze in the early 90's drove the price to the point where I couldn't say no to an outrageous offer. Also had a 78 911SC; nice but certainly not the pinnacle of Porsche quality. Am currently on the lookout for a 993 C4S as I just got done paying for three progeny through college. Two more to go, but I figure the only way is to grab the car before those two start the money drain. Same goes for guitars. ;)

Mark, you have finally beat me down. Any 2 of my "O"s on your short list for the Porsche. I can guarantee a couple of great playing guitars without the constant maintenance cost :D
