Actually, I really don't recommend the thumb method. Like other playing techniques, it is far better to struggle until you learn to do it right. But I have done it wrong for so long it is hard to change.

I'm bad at them right now, so they probably would sound better to people that have been in the bar for a while. :D

Same deal at your home bar. They would sound pretty good if your 3 sheets in the wind. :D

I took classical lessons for several years and managed to forget most of what I learned. It did not stop me from acquiring ten guitars, they don't test for ability at the cash register.

First i learned music when i was 8 years old. I understood music at 14 years old. Which made me realise that all that matters is how you make your intstrument sound. Different ways of playing equal different sounds. Size of figer has nothing to do with anything.

To me, once you ve learned music, you can understand it by learning to play your axe the Richie Havens way. Then, you'll need some botox injections on a weekly basis.

My current "excersize" is to travis pick "Desperado" just a fast as I can. I'm shooting for "Flight of the BumbleBee" speed. Not that I'll ever play it that way, it's just good for the finger muscles.
BTW...thanks for the response to this poll. I found if very interesting.

Glad you found interesting...

all I found... is that I'm, at best, a hardly medicore player.

"medicore" - is that somewhere between "softcore" and "hardcore"?

Jeff,
Even someone who is regarded as a "damn good" player out in the big wide world can look very average in this crowd.
Broaden your perspective just a tad and you'll find people who wish they could play like you.
That's my Ward Cleaver speech for the day.

Jeff, I met some people at the Tour who talk here about how they play, they're nothing like pros, they just pick for fun, they're not that good, blah, blah, blah.

Then I got to see them sit down at the motel and play. They're all a bunch of liars.

I sort of fit into 1, 2 and 3... so I put 1. But I love playing some lead from time to time, not that I'm much good at it.

Here's a question - when you pick up a guitar at a store, what chord do you play first? Mine's almost always a cowboy D.

When using an acoustic, I always gotta play an Aminor.

For me it is D minor while fingerpicking.

Something about a D minor tells you whether the guitar has got "IT" or not.

Well Jeff, since you are heading out on another incredible expedition, maybe you should send it to me and I will continue the break-in process for you.

I promise to give it a dose of D and Dm everyday!

Of course you all know of the dislexic agnostic insomniac who stayed awake all night wondering if there really is a dog.

That augmented G chord.
Kinda of a bass-y yet bright ring to it.

Yeah Cliff...your right.
I should stop trying to do my job and post on the OFC at the same time.
Maybe I'll just quit my job.

And I guess I meant an "augmented" G in the spritual sense...not the literal.

Geeez...tough crowd today.
