My memory may be bad, but I think Gwen was before MJ in the comic book. I still remember the picture of the hip MJ after Peter dreaded meeting the one his Aunt May kept trying to set him up with all those years. Nothing like the movies.

In the comic, Gwen was Peter's girlfriend before MJ. Gwen gained fame/notoriety as the first significant character - the girlfriend of the hero - to be killed off in any comic.
