Joined: May 2003 Posts: 4389 Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I know acer is the species and then the good one for necks is the sugar maple, acer saccharum, from the north east united states. It's a heavy bright sounding tone wood and can be visually, very appealing. I can't say I've seen many guitars made out of sycamore. | ||

I'm fairly sure I'm referring to Acer pseudoplatanus (the source of my username). The wood is very white, not very grainy and quite hard. Mighy make a nice fretboard. | ||

More sap than the Sugar Maple, lower sugar, and a slightly more complex flavour. Plus, it's down the street. After I'm done making syrup this year I'm using the sap to make wine if there's enough flow. Don't know what it's like for tone wood....hardly makes a whimper when I tap it. | ||

It lost a branch and it's in the Farmington watershed area and Frank was/is active in that Community association and somehow the wood wound up at the factory. | ||
