I know acer is the species and then the good one for necks is the sugar maple, acer saccharum, from the north east united states. It's a heavy bright sounding tone wood and can be visually, very appealing.

I can't say I've seen many guitars made out of sycamore.

Shame on me! Having trained in biology I should have known better than to use common names in an international context!!
I'm fairly sure I'm referring to Acer pseudoplatanus (the source of my username). The wood is very white, not very grainy and quite hard. Mighy make a nice fretboard.

"Sycamore" here in the States is "Platanus occidentalis"

London Plane is "Platanus acerfolia"

For what we call the London Shade tree, the signature element is the bark shedding.

I always can recognize "sycamores", out here, by their rather odious odor. "Maples" are, essentally, odor-free.

London Plane and Sycamore (American Planetree) look nearly identical and share that shedded bark and mottled appearance. Easiest way to tell the difference is Sycamore has "fuzzy" fruit that hangs individually- and London Plane has "smoother" fruit that hangs in groups of two or three.

I had heard that the "sycamore" we have in the states is actually a hybrid. Is that true?

Anybody ever try to plug a sycamore for sap in the spring? I have cousins who still operate maple sugar houses in New England.

I tap the Big Leaf or Oregon Maple, acer macrophyllum. More sap than the Sugar Maple, lower sugar, and a slightly more complex flavour. Plus, it's down the street.

After I'm done making syrup this year I'm using the sap to make wine if there's enough flow.

Don't know what it's like for tone wood....hardly makes a whimper when I tap it.

Ovation made two from the famous sycamore tree in Simsbury, the one that's on the quarter.
It lost a branch and it's in the Farmington watershed area and Frank was/is active in that Community association and somehow the wood wound up at the factory.

Anyone know what happened to the guitar? It was supposedly auctioned; did one of the OFC get it?

I thought we were making guitars. Curing hams, too? Probably no hope for this bunch.
