My other opinion that I don't care if you share, is that, by and large, music sucked since sometime in the 80s or even sooner.

The hair bands were frankly fads that couldn't last. Then we went into rap crap, boy bands and young girls that mostly just looked good. With MTV and all the videos, no one does want to see old people trying to make music. The people that buy music now are much more into the visual than the audio, so when the artists start looking old, no one is going to buy their music, because they don't look good in the videos.
That's pretty much my view of it except I'd say that it started to get bad in the 70s.

I was going to start with disco in the 70s, but I must have blocked it out of my mind. I used to say country western was the worst music, but then they came up with disco, metal and rap. How in the hell could some guy with a Viking helmet called Flavor Flave or whatever make any money selling "music"?

90% of EVERYTHING is crap. It takes a few years to sort our which is which. We tend to forget the garbage so it falls away and we remember only the good from the past.

That's the price of getting this old. For kids, most of the good stuff is now and in the future....for some/most of us many of the most affecting things in our lives have already happened.

McCartney is a glorious exception. Forever young, though finally wrinkled.

With the exception of touring & playing all of their old tunes are there any older bands releasing anything new?
As seen in this thread, many of the acts from the 60's 70's and 80's are releasing new material and have been.

As far as the state of music, some of you need to open your eyes. New music of ALL genre is in abundance!!!! In fact the amount of it is so great that the "record industry" has resorted to only distributing what they produce and know they can sell, but that's just a SMALL FRACTION of what's out there.

When I say NEW music, I mean NEW TUNES, not necessarily new STYLES. Everything from traditional blues, to Zydeco, to Jazz, to Country, to Metal, Emo etc etc etc.. is out there IN ABUNDANCE. Of course new styles too.

You need at the very least... to find Internet radio stations, search youTube, MySpace etc.. but it's all about searching for it.

Gone are the days of "air play" of unsigned music, or even non-hit music. There are pockets in some cities, but for the most part, it's gone.

MySpace you can set up a search of the latest and most popular downloads in the music section for your favorite genre...

I'd say there is more music available to more people now, and more new artists every day, than there has ever been in the history of music. It's just no longer spoon fed to us by turning on a radio.

Well said, Miles. I find there is so much out there that I can no longer sort out the good from the bad.

That would require me to get with the program, or modernize or whatever people call it, but frankly, I don't wanna. I was pretty conservative as a youngster and I'm getting much moreso. This is absolutely not a political statement in any way. I just prefer a simpler time.
I agree with you, Miles, on the diversity of music available and the quality is better in many respects. The radio filters much of the good out, but also filters much of the bad. MTV gave us most of the bad, IMO.
EDIT: Interesting that I took longer and used more words to express essentially the same thoughts that the Prof expressed.

Had to scrape my way to 1000 posts somehow, right???? It only took 4.5 years!

So many software license agreements, so few braincells. Uggh.

On topic, I agree with Miles. There's just too much out there coming at us in too many different ways. I think the days of the super-mega hits are over. What was the last major release that everybody knows, or at least knows about? Maybe Thriller? Purple Rain? Clapton's Unplugged?

" I think the days of the super-mega hits are over."

I guess by who's definition...

two words.... Miley Cyrus

In December 2007, she was ranked #17 in the list of Forbes Top twenty earners under 25 with an annual earning of US$3.5 million. She's 16.

Best of Both Worlds Concert Live CD + Highlights DVD jumped to the No. 10 position scanning over 51,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan for the week ending March 23. The triple-platinum Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cyrus double disc set re-entered the Top 10 at No. 6, scanning over 61,000 units. The last artist to chart two albums in the Top 10 was Ray Charles in 2004.

I don't believe the new CD listed above is available anywhere but WalMart at this point, scheduled to go public on April 15th.

I'd say that qualifies as super-mega hit, eventhough I couldn't name a song of hers if my life depended on it.

I'm glad you added that last line at the end, Miles. I was beginning to worry that you were the head of the Miley Cyrus fan club. She is marketed well. I suppose the Beatles never would have made it, if not for television and Ed Sullivan, but I'll keep waiting for someone who has a hit based on sound instead of sight. Rolling Stones excepted, of course, since they are just plain ugly wrinkled old dudes.

Amazing, Makes me feel sad for the kids who have some good talent today. I am happy I lived in the time where you started playing for the love of the music you heard. Then you tried to get better and better, and faster and faster because the bands were getting better and better and more and more complicated pieces were being written that were brilliant in their form and over all sound and emotional inspiration. You got into the industry at the bottom and you worked with better and better local musicians to try and reach the stage of covering these great bands and introducing your original music to those who came in droves to listen and compare your talents with others and if you were real good you got noticed and a record was etched of your work and off you went to sink or swim with the corporate money behind you. Then everything changed, I hate this new musical scene. I would be so frustrated if I was a young musician and I knew what people my age and older know about the way things were. You can debate the greed of corporations and the bad they brought to the table, I'll agree with some of it no question....... but the fact is..... under this banner I watched some of the best musicians thrive and become Gods in their time! How cool was that Right? Best dam music I ever heard was created under this terrible system. It is all bullshit now. It is mass marketing and targeting the teenagers with some mediocre talent that a company owns the kid or kids and out of nowhere they have tens of thousands of kids thinking hey....These are the new talents lets go listen.....tons of effects and fake harmonies and a group of kids who don't even know each other they are promoted until they sell the millions of units and the Company gets their investment and profit then they are not heard from again. This is sad. In the old Days you only got to the top because you had real talent behind you and the corporate owners would step aside and let you create because you had proved your salt in getting there. It was dog eat dog to get a band there. But when you reached the top you had something.
Your right Miles there are lots of good bands out there making music......who has the time to sit on the computer and search through thousands of names. I don't I'll take the Big Bad Greedy Corporate Bastards and the spoon fed radio anyday over this messed up system. It Sucks.

RUSH: 'Snakes & Arrows' Debuts At No. 3 On Billboard Chart - May 9, 2007
RUSH's latest album, "Snakes & Arrows", has sold just under 93,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release to land at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band's last studio set, 2002's "Vapor Trails", began at No. 6 with 108,000. All told, the new set is the act's 27th album to reach The Billboard 200, according to Billboard.com. Its highest charting effort remains 1993's "Counterparts", which debuted and peaked at No. 2.

I thought that was the lamest, most forgettable album he's done in 20 years, and he has left several stinkers along the way. Even Moody made me turn it off.

We have to keep in mind that a lot of the old 60's and 70's bands are BEFORE the oldies to the present generation. My son is into the "death metal" stuff and I decided to get down a song so I could teach him. The song is "Walk" by Pantera. In the Youtube lesson that I found, the guitar teacher started out by talking about the "classic" song by Pantera. Classic? I guess I'll go back to learning my wagon wheel era Hotel California ending solo.

there is some good music out there today but I really think the musicianship is for the most part gone.

a band like big brother, yes, zappa, elp, and even led zep and the who were more AOR rock than hit oriented and since the main focus seems to be downloading music, albums are a thing of the past.

I don't know how many tunes I know that were just peripheral tunes on a LP that are my favs. there is no room for that now.

even channels delveloped to play music on tv are now only playing reality shows mtv mtvclassic vh1 vh1classic

I saw an advertisement for mtv the other day that boasted all your favorite videos are available 24 hours a day ON DEMAND so you have to log onto the channel select what you want and listen not like when you would put the channel on and see something new.

As for radio I am so glad I live in the philly area and can get wxpn (they stream on the internet also so check it out) it is a terrific mix of new old and obscure. sorta like radio was in the golden age of the 60's and 70's
