Record sales and radio plays and cover versions prove this beyond doubt. I was a great fan, aged 11, of the first album and all the way through to Rubber Soul. After that I lost interest. But what does history care about what you or I think? On a personal level I think Lennon and McCartney were/are assholes. Ringo is Ringo and George was plainly the most interesting and in terms of individual talent maybe the best. He certainly didn't have Lennon's talent for self-promotion and he certainly didn't have Lennon's talent for punching women. But hey, nobody's perfect. And Mull of Kintyre and The Frog Song should condemn McCartney to songwriter's hell for eternity.

When I couldn't find one, I gave up on posting of John's death. I have a bunch of Beatles music on my computer that I never listen to. I met John multiple times in NYC, and he wouldn't give us any change. We actually talked to him at length from our doorstep on Bleecker Street. Seems like a nice enough chap though, when you got him alone. Just Cheap. Not to speak ill of the dead (but I am about to) John had an over-inflated sense of his own importance. Do I really care to see you having a Bed-In for Peace? Like Dave sez, Many an artist's standing is raised in Death. Even more so in Martyrdom. George Harrison is Dead too... Is there gonna be a big party for his birthday? "The Beatles" were influential to so many people because they were so well Marketed. Frank Zappa made a profound social statement with his parody of the Sgt. Pepper's album cover! :p ![]()

Never a Beatles or Lennon fan. In my mind, just better promotion than other groups. Of the 4, Harrison was my favorite. The quiet Beatle. Yes, sorry Lennon is gone, and sorry about the way he dies, but he is dead. Lets get on with our lives.....

We were sitting outside of Gillie's Pub (now defunct), listening to music, drinking beer and bumming more beer. We did that Often, when we weren't doing the same thing outside of CBGB's or the Other End. And nowhere in that post did I say that we were 'pissed' at John. We met him multiple times because he would play at Gillie's with Yoko and David Peel. But I still need a Job, which is why I am busking for rent money.

I was the hospital in Landstuhl Germany recovering from some gunshot wounds and was still fading in and out of consciousness when I overheard a doctor telling a nurse about someone dying from gunshot wounds. I couldn't fully wake up or move although I could partially hear voices floating past me. I just laid there saying to myself, "Well, I guess I'm dead. This is really strange." Then I totally passed out. Two days later I finally woke up and found out they were talking about John Lennon and not me.

The others, including Lennon and add Janis Joplin, I didn't like so much when they were alive and didn't like them any more after they were dead. I liked Eva Cassidy's voice the first time I heard it and I didn't know she was dead. So I don't fit Dave's theory, but I don't usually fit most.

A brilliant song and a personal fave from an often mis-understood artist. It's sad that perhaps his last contribution to the music industry is the way that artists relate to their 'fans' in public... Multiple bodyguards, almost always 'tooled up' and anyone getting too enthusiastic at close quarters is likely to get hurt... Better safe than sorry. R.I.P. John

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 5567 Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | 1963: first heard the Beatles on WGH AM radio in Newport News, VA. on my Silvertone transistor radio...I was 11 and it changed my life...but it was the Beatles Music and the band as a unit that did that not the individuals... I agree completely with Schroeder on this: I also moved on to other groups and other Genre's...I became enthusiastic about the singer songwriters: Taylor, Croce, Denver, Stephens, Chapin, Young, Prine, all of whom left an indelible impression on my life and music. I remember Lennon's death because my band had just come off of the road after 2 years and we met at the apartment in Richmond, VA of our bass player to hold a memorial of our own: not because we idolized him, but rather because we felt that a part of our innocence and youth had passed along with Lennon. Truthfully: Chapin, Croce, and Denver's deaths affected me much deeper on a musical level than did Lennon's... I watched the last part of the 1972 Concert at Madison Square Garden last night on Pladia...Sorry but I thought is was a complete waste of time...horrible and hard to listen to...an exercise in excess...but at least it reminded of what a talent George Harrison was ...Lennon's post Beatles rant/romp with Yoko just never resonated with me and still doesn't...however, he lives on in Julian who is the spitting image of his father. Rest in Peace John... YMMV

At that time all we needed to get a nice girl was a geetar, a song and a t-shirt with the right message on it. With "Imagine" I had all the three. Those were the days... What anoys me the most is not the good guys who are gone, but those Bad Guys lurking around the corner, who are always coming back for one more round.

When they were still together it was George for me. Later it was John. and until I 'got' that Silly Love Songs was more than semi-literate, I decided to like Paul too. .....but who can't LOVE Ringo? But well marketed, hard working guys? You'll never find better. I always loved the quote from John about the "Tune in, turn on, drop out '60s" "Are you kidding? We worked our ASSES off!"

Yeah, she was my mom, but I guess she wasn’t so great.
