I let em' play if I know them and they aren't drunk or ham-fisted.

I remember my first OFC tour WOZ let me play his Adamas, and Cliff let me play the Q found out later it wasn't his so he could care less.

Yes and no. Determined mostly by reasons already mentioned. I say "no" more often than not when alcohol or greasy food is involved.

In the early 80's, my duet partner and I were playing at a club just off Music Row here in Nashville, when we got a surprise visit by Johnny Lee. Johnny was in his heyday at the time and proceeded to stay, and play, with us for the whole night. It was a total blast but we were all drinking pretty liberally that evening and an interesting situation unfolded.

We had been swapping my black Adamas back and forth, identical to one Johnny owned and used at the time, and by the end of the evening, he got it in his head the guitar was his own. Now it really didn't take that much convincing, and we parted on good terms, but for a short time there was tension and it became a funny folk tale that grew through the years none the less.

Two years ago I got booked at a weekend long event with Johnny outside of San Antonio Texas... first time I'd seen him since that night in Nashville, and it just so happened I had that same guitar with me.
I didn't say a word about it all weekend until the final, private, closing party where I accompanied him for several hours. In the wee hours, Johnny picked up my guitar, strummed a few chords, and said, "ya know, I used to have one JUST like this".
I busted a gut and told him the story.

Johnny is a sweet, fun guy, and when I got to the part where I explained that he'd once thought this particular guitar was his, he turned bright red and said "Oh lord... I didn't make an ass outa myself did I ?".

Before we parted company, I had him sharpie his signature on the blonde part of the upper epaulet, adding a new ending to an old story.

Great story.

Right now, downstairs, a 15 year old kid from across the street is playing my OFC slothead (ding!). I trust him to be careful but I'm also encouraging him to play. He's already a fine player and getting better day by day. Don't know if he'll ever be famous, but with any luck, he'll always love playing ....

Mostly no, but that's because mostly it's high school friends of my daughter. She won't let them play her guitar either! If it is someone I trust, sure they can play my guitar. Frequently it is someone who has never played a real Ovation before, so they are curious.

Let them play my "stealth" guitars? With a few limitations, oh yyeeaahh, baby--it's a lot of fun watching the condescension change to bewilderment, to incredulity, to respect, and finally......to GAS. :D :D

I'm careful who I invite down to the bandroom. Playing is not the problem, but maneuvering the guitars in, around and amongst all the other junk can be. Once in the bandroom, guests can play whatever they want. No limitations whatsoever. Kids can be a problem, but they gravitate to the drum set, and they can do whatever they want there.

I leave the Balladeer out on a stand in the family room and I have no problem with my son's friends picking it up and playing. There will be an O convert or two somewhere down the road.

The rest of them I keep up in my office/music room. I'll let them come up when I'm there and play whatever they want.

WOAH!

It's one thing being on the back end of it but being on the receiving end! HOLY COW!

The only place that I normally "refuse" is at gigs.

Usually at every 6th or 7th gig, there's always somebody that wants to come up and play a song on my guitar.
I've NEVER in my life DONE that, and will only do so if I'm ASKED.

8 out of 10 times, the person is drunk.
9 out of 10 times, they suck.

My usual retort when a drunk staggers up and asks "Hey Man, can I play guitar?" is "Did you BRING one??".
When they answer "Well, . . No", I respond with "Well there y'GO! . . if only you'd BROUGHT one . . . ."

Then there's always the drunk that says "Hey! . . I play in a band . . ".

"DO YA'?? . . . then why are you stuck HERE on a Friday Night listening t'ME?? . . . .?

i usually lug two or three extra guitars and an ukulele to events so that others may play. although it sounds "generous", it's actually a bit self-serving. seems there's always folks that show up to these gatherings without an instrument for various reasons. i don't wanna be without something to play if someone asks to borrow, and then bogarts mine.

Yeah, it really pays to keep a used, but decent sounding/playing beater on hand. I have an old Yamaha in the shop that a guy brought in to sell. He doesn't play, but bought a used car and this guitar was in the trunk. When he brought it in and I took it out of the case, it had a big hole in the back where someone dropped something on it. So the guy said he was good with wood working and he'd patch it. Well, he did about as good a job as my 6 year old niece would have done, but the thing still sounds great and plays like a dream. So, it is now the "shop guitar". I can't sell it, but I take it as a spare to open mike, let those who come in to the shop without a guitar use it when those instant jam sessions materialize, and on bad weather days, let my students use it so they don't have to bring their guitars out in the excessive cold/heat/hail.

When I purchased a 1778lx and a CL 12'er my son's friends came over to play. They played hard and it scared me to death that they would mark the hell out of the finish.

Long story short, I sold those two and bought a few Adamii, they can take a lickin and keep on pickin!
