The only Taylor I liked playing (and I DID try a lot of them at Elderly in Lansing) was the 914ce, and I had to play four different ones before I found one of those that impressed me. I probably would have considered paying $800 - $900 for it, but any one of my Ovations sound and play better than it did overall. The Taylor was about $4000.

Puting all the ho-hum aside, I like all good sounding guitars and liked the fertilizer joke.

Stephen, while I did use your quote, I was not directing what I said in particular to you...I know you have a DDSM...sorry if you thought I did...

Actually, all of this is pointless...

Last I looked, there are bigger problems going on...

Maybe if the average taylor owner wasn't such a douche bag it wouldn't be so entertaining to poke fun at their guitars.

This does NOT apply to you guys Mike, Ronnie, T28 or anyone else here. You guys obviously are the exception to the rule since you are smart enough to also own ovations, martins, collings, etc. But the thing I find ironic is how we, as ovation fans, have endured a lifetime of redicule about our plastic guitars, yet we mention one anti-taylor comment someplace like the AGF and immediately everyones panties get wrapped around the axle.

Somebody go post the following on the AFG. I DARE YOU ...

"I am looking to buy a new guitar and I am really impressed with Ovation. I have tried many other brands like Taylor and Martin but I keep coming back to the Ovation. I think the model is called the Legend. It's less money than the other guitars but actually seems better made and plays wonderfully. I am not an expert but the sound seems so much more crisp and alive than the other brands. I was a little concerned about the synthetic back but it seems very comfortable and over all the Ovation guitar really seems to be a better choice. Does anyone have experience with Ovation guitars and do you think I am making a good choice if I buy it? I could afford the Taylor or Martin my budget is $2000. but my impression is that the Ovation is better."

You will see that the T-bashing around here is mere childs play compared to the onslaught of venom that will flow off that board. It's downright comical. Remember the thread over there a few years ago about the Tak 75 Braz? They went on and freaking on how a piece of japanese junk should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as a Collings. One idiot was especially vocal in the matter and Beal took him to the mat. Four pages in he even admits that he never personally played or heard one. I never laughed so hard in my life.

For me the "sport" of Taylor bashing is as much just fun as it is fact. I've played some nice ones but never nice enough to want to own. There's an imaginary line in my sand and a guitar has to cross it for me to open my wallet. For whatever reason Takamines, Ovations, Martins and Collings cross that line by the dozens. The only Taylor that has crossed has been the Big Baby which to me is the best Taylor. But everyones line in the sand is drawn in a different spot, so hence Taylor is very popular with a lot of folks. Which is good.

Taylor is in good company. I also hate PCs.

So far they are playing very nice. Almost like they know it was a setup. I am impressed by their responses. Maybe just a few bad apples spoil it for all the others.

We shall see as the thread continues to grow (so far 5 responses).

I'm not looking at it as a setup. More like research.

Truth be told, I don't own a Legend.

Pretty civil thus far...

"The only real deal breaker for me is the tight string spacing..."

"...which really works well with O's crisp, clean, non-bassy sound..."

"Maybe some day, they'll build an affordable model with a wider neck"

Herein lies the issue with the opportunity to try the myriad of 'O'/'A' models, there just aren't enough models in the showrooms. Those of us fortunate enough to attend the 'gatherings' get to sample a smörgåsbord of flavors in tone, neck width, etc. and make an informed decision as to which 'O'/'A' meets our need$/ears/styles.

I wonder how many, if any, non-OFC members over there have listened to Music Mike's 'comparison' project?

Thanx Waskel for that post. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

I fully know the history of ridicule Ovation has endured at the hands of the uneducated and uninformed on the other sites for many years: I have been a proud player and owner of nearly 50 Ovation and Adamas guitars for nearly 35 years...

Certainly, as owners and players of Ovation/Adamas instruments, we know better...but folks, it's not the guitars that are at fault: either Ovation or Taylor; Tak or whatever...it's the owner/user/collector, or in the case of the other forums, mostly the non-users or big egomaniacs who have the problems...and it not only makes them look ignorant it makes the entire forum look bad...it also makes the brand look bad...

I just thought we could be better than they are: just because they are the way they are does not mean we can't rise above it and be different...our guitars are certainly better on many price points as well as technology: they speak for themselves...we on the forum just went through a period of growth (personal and collectively as a forum) of remembering that many industry personnel look at this forum...sticking up for your favorite brand does not mean that you have to douche someone else’s...it makes the sum total look a bit more unappealing to the casual visitor...sure it's fun...but fun at someone else’s expense is just not right...are we really that bored? Grab your Ovation/Adamas and find a nursing home to play for…or a retirement gathering…or a veterans program…(and so on)…lets be useful and not a hindrance or, as we in ministry like to call it, a stumbling block…I’m being sincere here folks…I believe it’s that important.

That’s my opinion and I know it's not shared by some; it's just the way I see it and how much I care about the big picture...let the other forums look and sound like the uninformed mob that they are...we're better than that...at least I would hope so!

BTW: Dave I think that's pretty harmless and Waskel, thanks for posting that...let's watch and see...I think Stephen agrees with me that it is mainly a few "bad apples...we'll see...

Waskel dropped the ball by not putting the word "ovation" in the title. The real stove knitters will see "looking for a new guitar" and not even click it.

Try putting "Selling my Taylor to buy an Ovation" or "Brazillian vs. Lyrachord" in the title and watch the sparks fly.

There's the "slips off my lap" crap again. 7 hours playing Karls #47, most of the time bent over trying to read the print in his song book, and I never noticed it slipping. What am I doing wrong?
