Checking the braces with the dental mirror is a good idea. The way the cracks radiate perpendicular to the grain makes me think the guitar was smacked hard against something, with the point of impact right there at the waist.

Assuming no damage other than to the finish I'd consider the $750 web site price a fair deal if I was really jonesing for 1619. The bidding might go a bit higher than the current auction price, though.

Well, that 200 Bozo Requinto looks mighty good, and so does the Taylor ...

I think, if he gets the chance, Iffy is going to check her out with a mirror ... I don't know what to think about this. The prices on new CLs is around $1800 to $2300, no? I would not touch the damage to the guitar if it was mine; at least I don't think I would. Iffy, you're an angel for your fearless flag waving, and I, for one REALLY appreciate it~! Is that carved TRC really worth any extra $$?

If that guitar sold right now, the seller would make about the same amount of money, once EvilBay gets finished with him.

What s the difference (that I'm obviously missing) between this guitar (1691-4) and an 1869-4? The mysteries continue ...

1619: deep bowl full body
1869: shallow bowl cutaway

Completely different animals. Shallow bowls have a thinner acoustic tone than deep bowls. Not a consideration if you play exclusively plugged in. The cutaway also means less top for vibrating, thus different overall tone. I've owned both. I now own only the 1619. YMMV.

Also, the new CL's are different from the vintage ones in terms of bracing and neck profiles.

Actually I knew about the difference in bowl depth. I think the 1869's are obviously beautiful, but it seems like a lot of people buy them and then get rid of them, unlike the deeper bowled guitars.

In my personal opinion, the older 1619 and 1719 CL's are among the singularly most classic and beautiful Ovations. They are the only standard issue models with both abalone purfling, fancy inlay, and a carved bridge. They have a big belly and no cutaway to maximize the acoustic response and volume. They are at least 15 years old (1719) so they are seasoned and darkened to a glorious amber hue (the -4 finish anyhow).

Plus you have a bunch of dudes on this site who have unwittingly promised to buy it from you in the unlikely event that you do not like it. :D At worst you might lose, what, $100?

I am in Bergen County BTW if you are close by... I could help you with setup and such issues if you are not knowledgeable about doing so. I have owned more than 70 guitars so I long ago learned to do almost everything a "tech" does myself (fretwork notwithstanding).

Thanks, rpguitar! Good to know you are close (I'm in Monmouth County). So far, I'm getting about a 50-50 yah/nay feedback here. I really like that guitar and have been watching for one. I (badly) played one a few years ago and really liked it, but obviously, I am taking a risk here, if I do go for it. The price is a bit high, but evilBay has to get their cut too, and so I suppose the seller factors that in. At this point, I'd still be happy (I think) to get it at its current price, but not much higher. I did ask around a bit and the highest price suggested to pay for it was $800. I wonder how much that gold label helps!

OK, the earliest I'll be able to view it will be Saturday. I'll do my dangest to check it out.

Besides, that will me a chance to get some fresh Apalachicola oysters on the half shell at Philipi Creek in Sarasota!

The one thing that impresses me is that this is a 32 y.o. Ovation CL. Mine was made in '85 and, as I said, it's a KEEPER. Just imagine the possible mojo in this one...

As for possible mojo, I hear ya! I believe that 'energy' from previous owners hangs onto a musical instrument!

While I am thinking about it, what do y'all know about "drop in preamp" style ovation guitars? Is it a difficult thing to change out a preamp? And if one DID do that, what would such a change cost, and how would it affect the guitars? I know this is a broad question, but I have a feeling you fellas will once again enlighten me.

It says here that most of the ones we've discussed here would fit the bill, that is, if I'm reading this correctly. These things are COOL. Then again, I read more than once that the OP24 was one of the best ever made... opinions? Oh, and here's the link to see what I'm writing about:

Day-um Willa, I gotta ask ya! Why would you pay a near premium price for a vintage classic Ovation and then mod it if none are needed?

There are many other models available to drop the iDea into. And yes, there are several issues with changing the preamp... Do some 'searches' here on the site. In fact, I have an factory fresh Ovation CC54I PL iDea for sale HERE .

To be honest, if you plan on modding this guitar, I won't go check it out. Sorry, but if ya want an iDea or a preamp with EQ and/or tuner, find another model.

Iffy, you are being polite, lol! That would be um, "DUH, Willa"! I was just curisous, and my son has a CS-257 that he uses for practice; he asked me about the pre amps. I would NEVER modify that guitar ~ NEVER! If I do buy her she will stay '"as is".
