That video was shot with a short interview which is to be edited and submitted to mindtv Scott at the Barrington Coffeehouse did it and he has not found the time to edit it. That version of the song is short it actually has another 2 verses and is about 6 minutes total in length. the mindtv video can only be 5 minutes so I shortened it. I was called by the film maker to be interviewed for the movie and he left the title on my voice mail. I immediately recognized the line from the Walt Whitman poem and from being etched in the side of the Camden City Hall. Some time soon I picked up the guitar and the chorus came out ... the verses were slightly harder. How do you cram 200 years of history into 6 verses? It is not easy. Anyway when I called TJ back about the interview I asked if he had room for any music and told him I wrote a song for it if he wanted to use it. I recorded a scratch track on my trusty OLYMPUS LS 11 (shameless plug) and sent it off he loved it. So I borrowed a recorder and recorded a good copy. I added bass, shaker, 12 string, a lead and tympani. TJ hated it. so I edited it down to guitar and bass and sent it back he loved it again. (I like the full blown mix better but that's me) He then told me that he was going to use the tune to open the movie and at various points in the film cut some fills, but the end song was the important one. so off to the drawing board and I wrote another song called "home" which was not so Camden specific so if he did not want it I could use it elsewhere. He loved that one too so that is also going to be in the movie. Camden has been the worst city in the USA in time magazine for about 10 years or so, it is a tough town that boomed in the 1800's and all through the 60's but declined when RCA Campbell's soup and other companies left to make their stuff overseas.(or in the case of campbell's in the midwest.) I saw my hometown become a shell, we used to jokingly call it dresden but ultimately it was not funny. The corner stores and places and people that made it may home are now all scattered or gone and I have to admit I miss them. I spent 17 years there in the public school system because I wanted to give back. It is easy to criticize but getting into the trenches and trying to make a difference is a whole different thing. Anyway, although I have been at my present home for almost 20 years, I still don't consider it my home. the neighbors and places are all alien to me so when I had the opportunity to contribute these songs to this movie It made me feel good. I am glad you like this tune it is a very special one for me. edited to add that this particular performance was not my best but pretty good.

I grew up in too many different towns to call one my hometown, but I appreciate the sentiment. You're kind of a softie beneath that grumpy, hairy exterior, Al.

Jeez, even if you didn't just get here, you ought go back and listen to all of the songs. There's some good ones in there. And even a great one here and there. So on another thread a character from the past dropped back in. He hasn't been round lately ... turns out he was dealing with all kinds of luncheon meat in his life ... or something to that effect. Couple that with having to rehab a bad back, and it's real good to know he's: Still Standing - Styll This song goes all the way back to the first OFC CD effort. And oldie but a goodie. Great sounding Ovations. Nice job, Styll. Looking forward to the new CD.

As always, great music, great selection, and the humbling realization that I may never be in the same league as some of these people. Not that that's gonna stop me from playing or anything. ;) Keep crankin'em out Bobbo!

A relative newcomer to the OFC, Kit Mann has wow'ed a bunch of people here with his posts and his music. And with all the nonsense going on all around us, sides being drawn, and perceptions colored by stubbornness, bigotry and fear, it's only fitting that the time is right for: No More Color - Kit Mann Peace.

Joined: April 2010 Posts: 1227 Location: Connersville, Indiana | Thank You all. I wrote this after spending a day with my cousin Bob who is blind. I wondered what it would be like. I was at home and we had a bunch of kids and grandkids around. I shut my eyes and just listened to everyone. No judgments, but within the conversations I could here laughter, pain, overbearing personality's and it just go me to thinking. I played 3 different guitar tracks. 1 electric clean, with reverb, I then played the same thing on my elite. I then used my electric and toned it down a bit with some sustain to take up time and space this way you could hear what the 2 other guitars were doing. I played the electrics through my Crate GFX 212, but the amp was placed in a soundproof box and mic-ed. The Elite was just mic-ed, one on the sound holes and 1 mic about 6 feet away. Since I had so many guitars working I opted not to have a lead guitar, but to bring the bass forward and basically use it as the lead guitar. I had to articulate to the dumber what I wanted it to sound like, and that there would be no drums in the versus just the chorus and ending. I didn't put it on my cd because I was worried that it may be miss understood. Since I have had a lot of people, or different ethnic groups listen to it and get their feedback. They all like it, and the only comment was maybe on the inside jacket, write what the song is about. A man in prison who can not see, let alone see any color, but hears what going on around him. And he wonders what if the whole world could not see any color, not just white, no color, would the world be better. Again Thanks Bobbo for posting the song, I will ad it to the next cd. If anyone wants me to send them the song just e-mail me at kitmann@me.com or go to my music web wwwsoundclick.com/cryforhelpkitman and I will e-mail it to you or you can down load it under kits demos Kit

The learning curve of a musical instrument seems small compared to teaching yourself how to home record. (At least as far as I'm concerned anyway. ;) )

I read in a mag where one of Aerosmith's songs they used a smaller amp, cranked it up, placed in a metal garbage can and mic-ed it. then they put the lid on. They got the sound they wanted. Who would come up with that. Must of been a good party prior to the recording session. I have a Lexicon Lambda interface, didn't like the software that came with it. So I use garage band and Logic express on my mac mini computer. There tutorials for both, it's a lot easier then I thought it would be. Keep Playing and recording, it's like golf sometimes you hit the ball great others it ends in the neighbors yard. :)

So you can get all those digitized plug-ins, waveform editors, voice processors, sound shapers, and all that black magic hocus pocus stuff ... but underneath it, you still gotta MAKE the music. There's a lot of great tracks in this set list proving just that. And some of that sound was pure accident ... just ask any of the folks. They'll tell you. "I was just messing around and it sounded good". They didn't mean to make it sound like it does ... it just happened. And then there's the other stuff. Nothing but some strings, some breath, some percussion, a few vocal cords, and someone new "sitting in". Instant classic. Making music raw and pure. It happens once and will never be duplicated. It's the kind of stuff I like to listen to and why we go to live shows. We can listen to the singer songwriter - who can touch you with the simplicity and depth of a well crafted song. Or the jam session - where anything can happen and it usually does. Summer finally made it to CasaBobboland. It's been very mild, but yikes, today it in the high 90's and tomorrow it's supposed to reach One-Oh-Eight! I think I need a little something from the: Ice Cream Man - The OFC Southern Style Jam Band The boys got together at the Southern Style jamboree in Asheville, NC and something "just happened". CrimsonLake was there to catch it on video, which I now offer up to all of you. Enjoy every lick by MusicMishka, Captain Lovehandles, Lanaki, and Blues Sailor, with Big Chris sittin' in. And someone is bangin' on the skins, don't know who but maybe the band will tell us. But no matter ... all the flavors are guaranteed to satisfy. I think I'll enjoy mine in the shade. Good thing it'll be back to normal 70's in a couple of days. Until then, the only thing to do is enjoy what we got. Hot licks and lots of them.

If it wasn't for Nicky's Don't Fear the Reaper licks, this would've been number one on the list. Some beautiful songs from MusicMike and Mr. and Mrs. Lanaki as well. Twas the day I officially became an honorary southerner. Thanks for the memories Bobbo!

By the way that is one of the few cover songs I play because I can actually sing it in key. Bobbo that was a treat, I wonder if Dairy Queen is still open. Great JOB!

Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8307 Location: Tennessee | Let's get you all started for the weekend. lady stonebobbo and I are off delivering #5 to his institution of higher learning ... with the hopes he doesn't embrace the term "higher learning" with the same gusto as the old man. To be true, there's no worries on that ... being a good student and an athlete gives him the kinds of motivation to get the most from what his new life has to offer. Our greatest hope is that he finds the secret to life ... never stop learning. G8r is the guy who epitomizes that truism most around here. In the few years he's been around, his guitar playing has improved by orders of magnitude. He's been studying hard ... and more importantly, practicing even harder ... applying all that he learns into something real. As demonstrated here: Little Martha - Sergio Caballero Isn't that awesome? Wanna learn it? You can! Just go here: Ovation Guitars Video Lesson Contest . He makes it look so easy ... and fortunately he shows us exactly how to make this tricky song look easy. I'm still working on it. Oh yeah, while you're there, you might as well vote for it. And then you can look up Jukebox Joe and vote for him too. I'm going to go watch a southern california sunset from the beach. And listen to Little Martha again. Somehow they just go perfect together. Until the next time, go learn something new.
