For the Record:

I'd like to offer a Public Apology to those other poor unwitting patrons who had the misfortune of being sat at tables adjacent to our's at Amici's Restaurant Friday night . . . and had to "move".
It had to have been AT LEAST eight tables' worth
(Al . . you would know, you were facing them).

Next Time: Timm Kummer and I aren't allowed to sit near each other, and the JerseyBoys can't all be at the same end of the table.

"y'can dress 'em up" . . . . .

...I'm thinking it was Jane Goodall who observed similar behavior in chimps.

Ovation has made commemorative action figures...now available through authorized dealers...

Construction--- Have I---! I got a concrete truck coming tomorrow and my second lumber delivery this month. It's all for a good cause though. I gave up my Music Room/ practic hall. So my Mom will have a place to live right with us. Hated to give it up but My mom is the coolest Mom there ever was. Making a huge appartment out of the upstairs of the three stall garage and building the deck she always wanted off one side. And I just got done building a 12 by 16 shed over an outdoor wood boiler to heat the house and the garage this winter! No More OIL for me I have had quite enough and I got lots of wood.

Anyway This really looked like it was one cool event! I sure plan to make it to next years gathering. I would love to play one of these slotheads for a few minutes, if someone was good enough to let me? I sure hope I can put together the cash to buy one of the OFC guitars this may be the second best instrument Ovation ever made!
These were the one of the most interesting guitars ever made as far as I am concerned! Nice photo in the thread. Now how bout one with just the instruments!

Cliff,
I heard you say that they laser-spectrometered the instruments and I saw in your Gallery that there was a printout from back then.

Curious if any of the instruments have changed their resonant characteristics in any way?

I don't really know, because mine didn't "make it" to the machine. Those were shipped up ahead of time . . I brought mine.

I'm sure one of the others could chime in . . .

# 43 made it to the vibrometer. I have a printout of the response. It has changed a little, but probably not enough to consider it audible. Curiosly the double peaks involved in the response are tighter on 43 than some of the others. If you are talking less than 1/4 db at 19000hz, probably not enough to reduce the jangle. I also altered the guitar a little in 1992 - put in a OP-24 - for which Kummer promptly called me Dr. Mengele.

As for the rumoured rowdiness at dinner, I feel we would have gladly welcomed anyone of those who left. Down on the Newer Jersey end of the table - poor Al had to look at me the whole meal!

I believe "JOEY Mengele" was the precise term Master Kummer used.

Timm is a sick individual . . . . I LIKE him!!!

I believe there was a BIT of a difference in the measurements from 30 years ago to now - but you have to take into consideration that there's been a drastic change in the technology since then. Nick Mackin said that for the most part, the measurements in '76 were "mechanical" measurements of the deflection of the top, whereas the LasVib "maps" the way various areas of the top interact with each other during the creation of a specific frequency.

It was interesting to see how MOST of the SlotHeads "see-sawed" in the lower bouts - whereas the lower bass bout would "pump", and as that declined, the lower treble bout took over.
Two Slots (I believed it was ElginAcres' #43 and PlayAdamas' #50) behaved a bit differently in that both lower bouts "pumped" more in unison - very much like a Martin dreadnaught (we watched the profiles running side-by-side to a Martin dread's profile). The funny thing was that Mark (ElginAcres) said that he bought this Adamas BECAUSE it was the first Ovation that he ever played that "sounded like a dreadnaught" . . . .

Seeing/playing them all in the same place made me realize that even though they were all "kinda" made at the same time, they were all like batches of cookies - or snowflakes - while they're all "kinda the same", they have individual characteristics. Even LOOKING at them side-by-side, you can SEE subtle variations in appearance.
Some had more gold around the fibreglass ring than others, there where variations in the amount of gold glitter applied to the top finishes (even the BOWLS for that matter), and there where just subtle differences in color (albeit "ageing" could be a factor). If y'look at the group photos, you'll notice that there really aren't too many (if any) that are "The Same" Colour . . .

It's almost like a litter of puppies.

I was gonna ask if y'all got to see any other high end guitars under the LasVib to compare/contrast to the Slots...

Great pictures Cliff!! As you know I was not able to make the trip. My father in-law has been in hospital since mid July. we heard from the doctor's that he needed a dialysis treatment. He is 89 years old and all of his organs were beginning to shut down. Without the dialysis he would not last the weekend. He received treatment on Friday and by Saturday afternoon his vital signs were getting better. He also spent Saturday afternoon beating my sister in-law at poker. I was close but it looks like he is going to be fine. I want to thank Al for being so understanding . I felt really bad about cancelling. If I had come I probably would not have my mind totally on the day's events.
I am glad to see that everyone had a great time.
