John, wasn't it the 17th hole that Santa viciously attacked me so we had to put him down?

No, that was the 18th. The one with the long straight fairway and the tree.

"...the tree."

Every golfer in the club just shuddered. If I had a nickel for every time I've gone to battle with "the tree"...

I was thinking that if I went I would be embarassed as a guitar player, but maybe could at least hang with you guys on the golf course. I doubt I could have broken 100, though, unless we didn't count penalty strokes and allowed as many Mulligans as necessary.
Mark, ProfBB and I had about 30 putts each on the 16th green...but that's a story better left for another day. Someone (who will remain unnamed) must have put a curse on my putter.

Mark, don't be too impressed. I didn't say Santa played on every hole... I used some from the bag Cliff scored for us on some of the uglier looking holes...

"The Tree" yep, If I may intrude as a non participant? Had one of those movie moments when I slapped a drive somwhere around 320-340yds. I mean this ball was like a bird.... I can drive but this was one of my best..ever....... dog leg right kinda thing at the top of the hill, par 5. I was on the fairway but way right with an uphill shot another 1oo yds to the top and then another 80yds to the green to the right. Yep.........did a rookie gusto shot and decided to take the shortcut, go through the tree's to see if I could green this in 2. Crack hit that ball with my 5 wood figureing the branches would slow the ball some and if I was real lucky it would hit about right. I made the dam green! I mean you could not really see much light through those trees so it was a total fluke! Now all I have to do is put this in and I have that hole I will remember for some time.....................6 putts later...........it was just sad. Man I love that dam game because it is something I know I can't master, and I just laugh all the louder when I do stupid shit like that. Best Ball is a game that was invented for guy's like me. !

All I know is that everynow and then, we'd hear someone shout from one of the other holes "Fore" followed shortly thereafter by "Five", "Six", "Seven"....

lol, 100 here! 53 front, 47 back

If that picture of Bobbo, Paul, Dave and Jeff was taken on the first night, I'm surprised any of them made it through the weekend.

You mean the one where you have two guitar players, three singers and one guy playing what looks to be a mean plastic bottle?

I know this is a few pages late, but I want to add my travel horror story.

It took us almost 2 and a half hours to get home and because of the freezing cold weather Sunday morning, we couldn't even put the top down until we were about 60 miles from home. Bummer...

What happened on the last night, well, I'm not real sure we should be talking about that. Some things are best left alone......

In yet another example of darwinism at its finest, I did indeed make it off the island alive and found my way north to Virginia. I'll be home by the end of the week and will post pictures then, if not sooner. I promise. Unless the envelopes full of small denominations of dead presidents find their way into my mailbox. You know who you are. ;)

Ditto to what everyone else has been saying. Thanks to all who participated. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The most amazing thing was that you felt like you were best buds with each and every individual there. I was blown away by the talent that showed up ... everybody brought some with them and some mighty fine musicians were in the house.

And lordy, lordy, lordy ... the guitars. Just sitting out there for play. Original Slotheads, Qs, old Martins, new Collings, unbelievable Takamines, THE original wood top adamas, Beal's new old 1547, sunburst 87C, Adamas #2500, Adamas 1s, Adamas 2s, Utes, FD14, a Lowden, a Guidarby and much more. Yes, a Taylor was on scene (even if we do have to keep a secret of the identities of all those who thought it was more than OK).

Matt was an incredible teacher. He had us "sipping from the firehouse" yet no one choked and gagged. It was amazing how much material we covered in two and a half days. Not to mention he was a blast to be around.

A ton of people did a ton of things to make the weekend what it was. Beal hatched a plan and it worked to perfection. Better maybe. Special thanks to Lorraine ... her hand was in a lot of logistics of keeping 20some mad hatters somewhat contained and out of harm's way, and keeping the guitar widows occupied and feeling the love of Fernandina.

But the wierdest thing thing happened going through the airport on the way out of town. After congregating last time with the band of bros, Tuppy was following me through the security screening and when my bag gets pulled by TSA for a hand search, he goes heads down, grabs his bag and bolts. ;) I still wonder why he looked surprised to see me in the terminal five minutes later.

Matt, Cliff and I had the trippy-est cab ride EVER to the Airport...

Turns-out, that our cabby was a drummer for a London-based band that was a contemporary of the Beatles. He was in Hamburg at the same time as the Beatles as they were just getting their legs, playing at the Star Club.

He was a veritable font of information about what was happening in British music scene at that time.

He is also a renowned expert on the worlds "Crown Jewels" and the history of Monarchies...

As I said...Trippy

Yes, a strange "trip" it was . . .

We were waiting out front with our bags, expecting a beat-up island taxi with some baseball-capped yahoo behind the wheel.

A pristine mini-van pulls up, and out pops "Neco".
Sixty-Something, well-groomed, well-spoken, wearing shirt/tie and a sharp dark-blue blazer.

He insisted on loading our gear into the back as he was well-versed in loading that particular van . . . and that he'd had experience loading gear as he used t'be in a band.
I told him "You MUST've been the Drummer".
"Yes, . . How'd y'know??"
"Because you've got the VAN!!"
He got a good chuckle out of that one . . .

Anyway, he played with Tony Sheridan at the StarClub and Kaiserkeller at the same time the Beatles were doing the same thing. He also played with a band called Airport that evidently had some minor hits. Years later, they did a bunch of well-paying "Gala" gigs with some other bands/artists that were their contemporaries.

His wife established a successful career designing dolls and through extensive research for that, he became somewhat of an expert on the British Crown Jewels. Evidently, he's amassed over a thousand pieces of artifacts, and is working with the Island to establish a small museum to put it all on exhibit.

I found him t'be a VERY intersting character, and will make a point to look him up next time I go back . . .

Finally...well rested and able to put together a few coherent thoughts........

Highlights for me.

Meeting everyone that I had not had the pleasure to meet in person (just via phone or internet).

Finding out that Dave and Al are also audio freaks and like Al said.....it seemed like we had been buddies for 20+ years.

Singing "Nowhere Man" with Bob and Brad (which sounded really good) when Dave came over and added another harmony which made it magical (keeping in mind it was past 2 am and we were mostly shite faced).

A sudden late night trip to the Huddle House which ended in a police vehicle pulling out of the parking lot at high speed...wheels squealing...and rumor had it at the time that a certain Scotsman was involved.

All the camaraderie.

The incredibly gracious staff at the Florida House and Bill and Lorraine for letting us invade their beautiful home.

Matt, Davis, Steve, Paul and Bill who constantly amazed us with their stories and their playing.

Truly a priceless gathering and memory.

as usually said after the OFC tour...YOU SHUDDA BEEN THERE!!!

Oh...a few other thoughts/observations (and I know I will probably get banned for one of them).

I was shocked that almost EVERY member there with the exception of Brad, Brad, Dave, and DeBanjo were taller than the Wabbit and myself (who both stand around 6 feet tall). I felt like I had a neck cramp after the first few hours from looking up.

Al's amazing impersonation of the Plumber/Repairman :D ....of which I need say no more ;)

Well.....Guitar-di-gras is officially finished.
I took Steve to the airport today and everything is back to a quiet island existance.

Just so you all don't feel alone my Chevy had a digestive tract malfunction on the way home Sunday forcing us to have to stay home and play guitars for the next 36 hours.

the conclusions;
I'll probably have to get a new transmission.
The Merrill doesn't cut it and has to go.
The D-18 is in a class by itself but is only an eyebrow or half a head at most, above the rest.
The rest were the Collings D-42, Tak 45, Tak BG. They are all good and depending on what and how you play any one could be the best or the worst. Overall winner is the Tak 45, it's just so comfortable to play and the tone is the best although it is the quietest of the three. Collings was a real close second and the BG has more pronounced individual strings, whereas the 45 and somewhat the D-42 are more of a blend. The Merrill is really good but really has the individual string sound going on. It would be great for single string things but it sounds thin on chords. I've got a Merrill-45 coming in May so this one can go, I need the room!
And then there is the CJ-41 which still is Steve's favorite and we restrung #35 with xlites and it kept up with all the rest of them too, as did #220, the one the rhythm bitch played for much of the clinic. No suprise to anyone here but these Adamii are in a class by themselves, kinda like the D-18. Life is just full of difficult choices..........

Joe has posted song topics through July so I can get back to work on them.

For all the talk about Taks and other guitars, it was Beal's Collings SJ that just blew my socks off. I may have to start saving my pennies for one of those.....
