Nice playing, G8r,

(Serge has a great life. Imagine how good he'd be if he really had reasons to sing the blues)

You da (blues)man Serge! Great job on a great song. What guitar are you using for that badass slide playing?

More great stuff. I can't play blues for beans, but I love to listen to it. Come one Serge, time to tell how you did it.

Wow, Bobbo, you put me in the company of giants! I'm humbled, and thanks for the good words, folks.

OK, 'Zilla you were the inspiration for my wanting to learn this song. You did such a killer rendition last time we were together I just had to try.

Guitar is a Takamine EF75J #61 (Brazillion B&S, master-grade spruce top, OM size), and the action is actually quite low, tuned to open G with D'add EXP16. I had to really adjust my touch to keep the slide from hitting the frets. And if you're gonna do slide, you HAVE TO use a Nunwell. Can't find any old vintage Coricidin bottles anymore.

Slide and vocals recorded together. On the guitar, 50% mix from the onboard thin-line driver (panned about 30% left) and 50% from a Beringher C2 mic about 6 inches from the soundhole (panned about 30% right); vocals thru a SM58 and EQ'd onboard my Alesis mixer. Went back and added cajon percussion picked up by a Shure PG52 placed at the soundhole. Finally, added a rhythm guitar track played on my Adamas 1687 run directly thru a Baggs DI into the board, in standard tuning, playing most of the chords barred and emphasizing the bass. Everything went dry into the final mix.

As I've been told, I need to get a Neumann to get some of the "mushiness" out of the guitar and vocal tracks. Still waiting for someone to send me one...

Nice job buddy......and it doesn't have to be a Neumann (although I am sure you would not bitch too much if one showed up on your doorstep!)

Careful there, Serge... I'm all too familiar with Stephen's technique. Took me a Viper and a Longneck to figure it out...

I had to forbid him from sending me any more guitars "to try out"...

Been there, done that. Needed something to play in Colorado. Tried a bunch of his and then at just the right moment he sneaked the 47RI under my nose. Hooked.

He totally fits the part. Especially those who consider music an intellectual pursuit. Or rather drawn to music which challenges your intellect. Sometimes it's intellectual mayhem. Warhol was like that, in terms of how he viewed music. And when I first heard this next song I was writing down notes about all the songs on the Vol 2 OFC disc and jotted down I bet Warhol would love this song ; not that I knew Warhol or anything but it just came to mind. And the whole picture then emerged on me that yeah, I can see alpep hanging out at Warhol's. At least what I've seen in pictures and what I've read. But it just seems right.

That was a wonderful song!. Other than the vocals the music sounded like something Crosby, Stills, and Nash wrote. I also love classical guitar sounds. A lot of people pluck the nylon strings to hard, my opine, but he did a fantastic job, even when he bent the strings. I loved it. Great Choice!

Funny. If I would have had to guess what a song from Alpep would sound like, I would have said, "heavy rock beat, power chords, and a strong electric lead guitar." This completely fooled me.
Good job, Al

Great one, Al!

Most of Al's stuff is introspective. The man is a deep pool.

db, ask Al to play his "stalker" version of And I Saw Her Standing There...

Thanks for the comments.

I wrote "Pretty as a Picture (Deadly as a Gun)" many years ago. Sort of a culmination of several women I knew (no not my wife).

It contains what I thought was the best lyric I ever wrote,
"cautious rendezvous like undercover spies"

I am humbled that you like my tune.

Great idea and an excellent thread, Bobbo!

It's a nice way to be reminded of the amazing amount of talent that lies hidden beneath the wise-cracking surface of the OFC. ;)

Thanks for bringing us the SOTD, keep it up, we're listening…

Since I just caught up, I'll only comment on the "current" SOTD: "Pretty as a Picture."

Wonderful music Al, and excellent lyrics… You knew her too, huh?

Nicely done.
