Primarily being a lurker, I've seen this thread but didn't investigate what it was about. Today I stopped by the Ovation website and it all, well, came together.

I'm always on the lookout for fun gigging songs but never really paid attention to this one, kind of listened through it when it came on the radio. But Joe has shown that it is incredibly simple for a solo to do, and I'm sure one or two people in any audience will be familiar with it. Maybe three. Gonna add it right away.

Thanks for a good idea, Joe.

If he's gotten it yet it would only have been in the last couple of days. It was on display at NAMM as the featured guitar in the Adamas case. Good looking, working musician's guitar.

I have not gotten it yet, but when I heard it was on display at NAMM, that didn't help my exercise in patience! I've looked everywhere for pictures to no avail. I have literally had to just not think about it for the last 3 months lest I lose my mind!

Pics, videos, and a lot of gushing as soon as I get it (well, probably 24 sleep deprived hours after, that is)!

Until then... guitar? what guitar? I have no idea what you're talking about.

Oh boy.

I wish they had time to take pictures of it before it was done so I could check it but apparently they wanted to get it done nice and quick. The 12th fret inlay was the suprise. It has my initials "J T" surrounding a little jukebox, in pearl, inlaid into the ebony.

But, it appears they put a pearl block background and then put the letters and images on top of that, making it look like there is a pearl strip on the 12 fret. :-/

I'm sure it doesn't look bad, but the effect I was going for was similar to the crown on the Kaki King 12th fret, but with a little jukebox.

I hope they can change it for me. I'll follow up as soon as I hear.

Thanks for posting the pics! Hopefully they can change that sonically insignificant but visually quite significant detail. The idea was to have the neck all black ebony with just the initials and the jukebox logo in pearl (not against a pearl background).

I don't want to complain, given that it's a custom guitar, but I hope they can do it.

Maybe no one knows what a jukebox is anymore. You should change your handle to Ipod Ike.

Yeah, I would complain about a cosmetic detail on a free 5k custom Guitar too. Christ dude, maybe it was your sketchy description that was the problem and not the execution. Jeeeesus, some people are never happy. I saw the guitar at NAMM. It's very cool. The Iris or whatever laser carving on the TRC is very nice. Joe, accept your unique, one-of-kind free custom Adamas with good grace and quit fuckin' whining. Or, alternatively, ask for a refund.

Ouch, Paul. I know you don't know how friendly my phone conversations have been with Rick, or how much work we put into getting the graphics just right for a guitar neck, but dang. The builders got the TRC right but got the inlay in reverse for some reason, that's all. Rick is already looking into it for me. He's been really cool and has encouraged me to go for broke. Don't confuse me pointing out that the inlay came out wrong with the fact that I'm already happier than you can possibly imagine at having the priviledge to design it! (But if you had an empty guitar spec sheet with 5k to design it any way you wanted, wouldn't you see it through to the end?)

Joe, Many of us got to see your guitar hanging in the bong at NAMM.
Adam pointed out the personal touches and their meanings.
Those little unique touches are what makes that guitar, your guitar.

I applaud you!
Not only for a great video, but with all the options available to you... you spec'd out a very understated, playable guitar, with a handful of personal cosmetic touches. The guitar looks great.

This custom guitar is not a freebie (a 1099 is attached).
It is your compensation for making and submitting the best video and allowing the manufacturer to use photos of you and the guitar for advertisement (whatever the fine print says).

If the 12th fret inlay is not right, give them a chance and they will make it right.

Considering that all of the other personal touches on your guitar were executed in such an elegant understated fashion, I believe that your description and expectation of the 12th fret inlay (pearl initials & pearl jukebox logo in the ebony fretboard) were as you described. It makes sense and fits everything else on your guitar.

Making a new pearl-on-ebony inlay to replace the ebony-on-pearl inlay should not be a big deal.

hmmmm A 5K guitar as a gift
figure state sales tax where you live and federal income tax
that is hardly a prize in reality.

I don't know if you noticed, but most price offerings are under $600. That's because you don't need to report it if it's under that amount. I've been pretty lucky, I've won stuff from seymour duncan, bbe, planet waves and mxr, and each time it's below that amount. About half the stuff I've sold and the rest I've kept. If it wasn't for the prizes I'd have no guitar pedals.

I think ovation should do a monthly prize under $600 and see what happens.

It were me, I'd just say thanks. If after a while I didn't like it, I'd put it on ebay ... but I'd probably keep it just for bragging rights.

They should send Joe his guitar in $600 pieces...one piece a year until he gets it all. That'll teach the friggin' IRS!

We have any IRS people as OFCers? If so I smell an audit in an4340's future.
Personally, I've always reported all my income, never won anything, and I send in a little extra just for good measure, in case anyone from the IRS is reading this thread.
