I've been diagnosed with "WoodenBox Elbow" after playing a non-Ovation for 14 hours in three days. I'll be posting pictures in the 'Gatherings' area instead of further mucking up this ridiculously long thread...

Killed a couple hours 'til the ride to the airport, and we got a song out of it (more on THAT one, later . . .).

Or that your former passion for playing has diminished? Or that you just can't achieve what you'd like to do on the guitar? Or that you simply want to get better at playing guitar in the most efficient and enjoyable way? If so, you NEED this clinic. Think about how much you've spent on nice guitars. A great guitar sure is nice to play. However a better guitar, in and of itself, won't necessarily make you a better guitarist. Matt Smith will. I've taken two of Matt Smith's clinics and both times I came away with a feeling that my guitar playing enthusiasm batteries have been fully recharged. Matt Smith is the best guitar instructor that you will ever meet. He's also the consumate musician. On Saturday night Matt started the show with a set in which he played five different types of guitar/guitar-like instruments: 6 string acoustic, 6 string electric (VXT), 6 string baritone, mandolin and lap slide. He's a master at each of them and we all got front row seats to a performance which was beyond incredible. Taking the clinic and watching Matt play will inspire you. No matter what your abilities may be, you will come away a better musician. Not only that, you'll have learned loads of techniques to practice to become even better. Spaces at these clinic will always be limited. If another clinic is offered don't make excuses. Instead, make it a priority to attend. Thank you Beal and Matt and everyone else who made this weekend so special. Thank you Al (a/k/a Mr. Big) and Miles for creating this board and starting this community. Lastly, but certainly not least, thank you Charles Kaman for inventing the guitar which has been the genesis of this great community.

I've been up for 27 hours straight, and coupled with the lack of sleep on Saturday night, I currently have my worst case of Jet-Lag ever. (Matt Smith had the genius idea of going to a waffle house for breakfast at 3.00am so we could sleep late........ Hmmm) I'm glad I flew direct to Glasgow. They've opened a new terminal at Heathrow and the whole thing is totally Fubar. I can't add much to what's already been said, except that it's almost seems like a contridiction in terms to be able to seriously improve your skills as a musician, while constantly laughing your ass off, but that's what it was like. If something like this ever happens again you owe it to yourselves to make the effort.

Not only did Paul assist Matt with the clinics, he also gave instructions on using a pro mixer and the proper way to do a sound check. Even more, Paul supplied the lap slide guitar which he generously donated for a raffle. Paul also supplied and expertly played a percussion box called a cajon. This thing is so simple in appearance that it seemed magical in the array of drum sounds that it produced. Cliff did a superb job on the cajon also and even did some drum solos. Cliff's take on Wipe Out was magnificent with some excellent acoustic lead by Stonebobbo.

I've said this many times to Bobbo in person... but, it bears repeating to the larger audience... NOBODY sells a song better than Bobbo. "Right Field" was just one example. Anyone who has been around StoneBobbo during a jam session knows this... he's infectious.

Not as bad as others have experienced. i arrived thurs to find witko, cliff and Brad waiting for me. we jumped in the van and went to the florida house. I finally realized I couild decompress a while and relax. that evening was the songwriters contest and I have to tell you I think Bill and Witko were robbed!!!!!! they both did an excellent job, although I am partial to witko's tune since he asked me to join him and play a solo. Not sure how the solo came out since I could not hear myself in the monitors but that is the risk of live performance. thurs hooked up and rode scooters BIG FUN they had governors so we could only do 30MPH and mine only did 23..... it would not get out of its own way. BTW I NEVER CLOSE ask the guys hanging with me on the front porch of the florida house. Cell phone in hand I was making it happen out in the world. Big thanks to Bill and his lovely wife for opening their home to us for a barbecue. We all ended up closing o'kanes that evening. Fri night after dinner we had a jam at the conference room. matt, steve, temp and cliff knocked us all out. After they were through I picked up a guitar to show someone the chords for "Little wing" and wound up with that same guitar in my hands for over 2 hours playing a bunch of old tunes sharing licks and adding my frog throated vocals to bobbo's velvet voice. sat night was very surreal. I think the ether kicked in by then.... Matt's performance was again stellar, afterwards we went out to the back patio and jammed....in came some bims holding drinks and giving us requests, then some dude came by with an upright bass... we got thrown out of the patio went to the back parking lot, got thrown out of then and into the conference room, there a woman moody picked up at the bar started playing some really cool jazz standards and singing and we started all over again more drinking more playing more fun sometime around 1:30 a guy came walking in with a guild acoustic bass and his wife and daughter and a cooler of beer, they joined in. later Matt showed up, more jamming more drinking more fun, the bass players daughter played some tunes, the hours ticked away. Matt decides we need to get breakfast so we can sleep early. I consulted my attorney and agreed. so off we go to huddle house. then there was what we agreed to only refer to as "the incident" sometime around 4:30 witko and I stopped laughing and went to sleep...... or was I dreaming the whole time??? surprises for me? well having your face on a t shirt is rather strange. Total stranger would look at me nonchalantly and point and whisper "that's the guy on the t-shirt". It was a TOTAL surprise to me as well as matt writing and dedicating a tune to me at his gig. Now I understand witko's insistence on my attendance. So good to see so many of you from the past and to meet others for the first time. cliff and temp always amaze me and make me laugh! stephenT witko and I talked hi end audio for hours like we were long lost brothers. slipkid did not have anything but a cheshire cat grin on his face all weekend. g8r has great taste in rum and a seriously cool family. and if when I sat in with cliff winds up on a video you can blame him for my sucky performance. ( the guitar was drinking not me) zilla's wife tried to pick me up at o'kane's or did I dream that? beggin jim made me laugh over and over even if I thought grits with a philly cheesesteak omlet was so so wrong. Moody would not tell me what he ordered at the crab trap restaurant but I have it from a good source it was a steak. Beal always a pleasure Matt unlocks the secrets of the ages A total pleasure to share a drink a chat a meal or a tune with all of you. It is rather difficult to grasp that putting up a message board out in cyberspace could result in exponentially widening my scope of friends. thanks to all !

Cliff did a superb job on the cajon also and even did some drum solos. This is a new Latin Percussion model I tried at NAMM and it's stunning. LP angle panel Cajon. Only difficulty with this one might be finding a gig-bag to fit, unless they start making one specifically for it. LP make a few other models starting from around $150. Al will be able to hook you up, and I'm sure he'll be able cut you a great deal.

I'm sure my neighbors will be loving me LONG Time . . . I had thought about taking a marker & having everyone sign the back panel, but the thought eventually got fogged-in later that night(fancy that) . . . It IS quite a cool bit o'kit. I've heard 'em a couple bar bands, but I think they just didn't know what they were doing with 'em . . . They are QUITE a lotta' fun! On Saturday afternoon, I walked into a little local shop and the woman came out from behind the counter, gave me a big hug & said: ". . You were "that guy" in the orange shoes banging on the box!!! . . . yewww were gooood!!!! . . ." Whatta' GREAT little town!!

I was thinking that if I went I would be embarassed as a guitar player, but maybe could at least hang with you guys on the golf course. I doubt I could have broken 100, though, unless we didn't count penalty strokes and allowed as many Mulligans as necessary.
