Thanks for all the "well wishes".
ebay has changed their listing format since I last sold anything.
I thought I had selected the SHIP WORLDWIDE option, but I guess I screwed that up!!!
I WILL ship ANYWHEWRE, by ANY MEANS the winning bidder is willing to pay for.

In a way I hate ebay, but the global audience can't be beat!

Just make sure you have the actual funds in hand before that baby leaves your house. The new scams are really sophisticated.

It's a shame really, such a beautiful and historic guitar. Sometimes timing is everything, and as time goes by, the perception of such a marvelous specimen will change, and it will recieve the value that is justified. Time will bring it's worth.

So, according to the law of Ebay an original slothead is worth no more than $7900.

I've said this many times; Ebay is not an accurate or reliable means to measure value.

Now maybe the naysayers may see how ludicrous it is to use Ebay as a benchmark of true value, rather than an indication of what the people who have happened to see that particular auction, at that particular time, were prepared to pay?

I never said that ebay was an acurate benchmark. I just reported the results.

I disagree. Name me a more reliable benchmark than ebay? Thousands of guitars are purchased every single day on ebay and the voice of that many people has significant statistical value.

What you can NOT do, is use any one-off auction as a point of reference. Timing matters, quality of the description and photos matters, feedback of the seller matters, and some of it is just luck.

I sold an Elite on ebay with a reserve and BIN of $700. In the first week it got 5 bids with a high of $380. Was that the value of my Elite? I relisted it the second week and it sold the first day for the BIN of $700. with exactly the same posting.

Ebay has it's quirks for sure, but just based on the sheer volume of transactions I would still contend that it is perhaps the best barometer we have.

Wrt to Colin's slothead, in hindsight it was probably not a good idea to have the auction end 2 days before the biggest shopping day of the year. If it was me I'd list it again in February.

Contrary I'd say this is a good indicator that all guitars are still taking a hit. In case anyone has missed this in the past year or so. You have to admit there have been many good buy's on ebay. Guitars have been going cheap. Today that slothead is only worth the $7900 and that is if our group did not tag it up to the reserve. ?? right?? Now with this particular I'd say that is an unfair assessment of such a rare guitar as it stands at one single auction but if it continues to only reach such a price after repeated sales then perhaps this is the value. Hell just hang on it for a while high end guitars like this will find a buyer by themselves. just make your own website and show it off. you'll sell it for the $9000.
I have made the ebay indicator statement in the past and I based this statement upon dozens upon dozens of sales of one one particualr type of guitar. NOT ONE SALE! and I don't care who you are dealer or collector. When there are thousands upon thousands of guitars selling every day in one place.... Sorry it happens to be ebay.......then this is the best indicator of the market value. IS it not? I am talking about USED guitars now. In fact many dealers in my area tell me they base there values on this internet market as well. I wanted to buy a Chapman Stick. Daddy's Junky music told me they would sell it for what simpliar ones go for on ebay. Sounded like good logic to me. Fact is they have to price there stuff according to the internet values or they will simply not sell guitars. Am I worng here. Sorry if this is not something many like to hear but it is what it is. "THE BIGGEST MARKETPLACE FOR USED GUITARS IN THE WORLD"
ANYONE here going to tell me they have not bought from ebay. ?? Anyone going to tell me if your in the market for a Custom Legend (that at one time used to fetch $1000 US used every day on ebay) and you'd still spend that on a used one at a dealer when you can find one for closer to $700 now from a seller on ebay that has had more sales than some companies?? You can tell me this but I'd say your foolish or your lying.
Now Rickenbacker guitars seem to be going up according to Ebay....... Know why........ ?? I don't but I can guess. Rickenbacker keeps it's assembly line at a slow constant pace and only produces a set number of guitars and basses each year. The market is litterally FLOODED with guitars from all makers, Gibson, Fender,Ovation you name it but Rickenbackers new and used guitars are always a short list on EBAY. IF your a rickenbacker fan you'll know what I am talking about. anyone selling a rickenbacker right now will certainly be using Ebay as an indicator. Sorry you guy's you can complain all you want some of us see it differently.
And the dealers still have the same guitars hanging on the walls. I ain't happy about it I am just smelling the coffee.

Don't sell that slothead. the guitar market has been takling a hit for a while (ebay indicates this as well) but it will come around again. list it on someones web site and be patient. I wish I had the $9000 I'd say it still worth that and will be worth more just like all great guitars!

well yes and no.

there is no strategy for e bay. it is too new. It is NOT a real auction and is unique. I have seen identical items sell for radically different prices.

why pay 1000 when you can get one for 700? because the person you pay 1000 may be a reliable source that you can trust. That is well worth the price difference. I see it all the time, I can buy one on e bay cheaper and they do. then when they get screwed they come crying to me or the message board about how something was mis represented etc. Why? because you wanted to save 2 cents. sometimes it works some times it dosen't.

guitars are taking a hit becuase of a number of factors, the US exonomy is taking a hit, watch the stock market, the commodities market, fill your tank with gas, your tank with heating oil and your fridge with groceries.

the euro is kicking the US dollar's butt and now for the first time I can remember the canadian dollar is equal to the US. I can get into a political rant here but since my job is to censor that stuff I won't.

Now one of the biggest factors is that there are few customers for the guitars. the kids are not really into playing something that you have to work at. It is easier to look at the colors on the guitar hero game. OK don't agree? fine well the quantity and quality of Chinese imported instruments are well STELLAR compared to the POS from holland that I learned on. It is amazing that I learned to play.

so, who do you see at vintage guitar shows? middle aged men. Last time I saw kids was when kurt cobain was alive and he sparked interest in playing guitar again. Many of us are selling off our instruments or downsizing. for every 10 downsizing there is 1 collecing. do the math.

I sell on e bay. I have my own website and business and sell there too. I can assure you that the majority of the stuff I sell never even hits the website or ebay.

Use e bay as a barometer if you wish, but take it with a grain of salt.

something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. and timing is still everything.

i know this is a no-brainer, but "many" does not equal EVERYbody. the person who bought it saw its value as higher than what the many perceived its worth was for whatever reason.
