Jeff:

Beautiful pics! How long did it take to make the wooden back? And on the 1537's, is the battery holder in the same place on both guitars?

Great Pics! Thanks for sharing. Loved the wooden back Ovation and the 1537 looked great. By the way, How much do you want for those shiney new rocks? :D

Beautiful guitars but my question is...what is that furry thing hanging on the wall? :)

How does that wooden bowl guitar sound? How is the weight compared to lyrachord? (If I missed this info in a different thread, sorry.) It does look great.

Very nice, indeed!

And all the questions I have were already asked by others in this thread.

I will try to answer all the questions posed above:

Paul M:
The wooden back was made by a Philippino luthier over a momth while I was living/working in Cebu. The unbelievable thing, he made it for 250.00 US dollar.s The workmanship is terriffic and the materials are also first rate.

Both battery holders are located in the waist, but 301081 has no retention screw like 301904 (in the waist next to the volume knob)

Steve,
I'd be willing to trade some of those shiney rocks for the right Ovation (FD14?)

Bentman,
The furry thing on the wall is a rat, nailed there to warn the others....(Or it may be... a flint knife with coyote jaw handle, in a fur lined sheath, given to me by Alfred Yazzi, a Navajo Chanter (read shaman) as a gift.

Cliff,
What the hell is a stapling project? I'm stumped. I suspect that I am missing the obvious, but cut me a break, you've seen the picture I posted of myself.

Paul B,
The wooden bowl sounds a bit like my 6774 folklore unplugged, though not nearly as loud and a bit more jangly. It is the lightest full size guitar, bar none, that I have ever held.

Thanks for enjoying the pics

In '81, how is the battery removed?

Is the bowl one piece? I see an inlay down the middle. Sharp!

Paul,
Have you ever seen bovine obstetric assistance? The same without shoulder length rubber glove.

(by the by, I've read "Even Moody gets the Blues". Hope life isn't so complicated for you).

. . . a household pet getting inadvertently stapled to the wall . . .

ferget it . . .

When ya' gotta "explain 'em", it just ain't worth it . . . sorry. :-)

D'ya know what kind of wood was used for the back?

There's an article in the current issue of AcousticGuitar about a PeaceCorps volunteer getting a copy of Dave Matthews' 12-string made in an open-air lutherie shop in the Philippines.

Jeff,

So far as the shiny rocks go....that was Steve Chapman that was interested in aquiring them (not me with the FD14 :D ).

All the shiny rocks at my house have been aquired by my loving and understanding wife. She typically wears them on her fingers, around her neck, etc. She considers then the equalizers to my guitars ;) .

Cliff,
apee-poly-logies, for wiffin' on the stapled pet reference. I usually "get" your quips on posts, but on this one I thought, "stapling a guitar together?"

I will seek out the article you mention. I have been to the Philippines alot. There are many really talented luthiers in open air shops and small production facilities. They are very skilled and take great pride in their work. Many use quality US guitars as a template insteasd of designing their own, but use local woods.

The back of the wooden roundbowl is made from a local wood, in English, called Jackwood. Very characteristic of Mahogany.

SteveT,
I wasn't confusing you with Steve C, I just wanted to put it out there. Though, if your loving wife wants more shiny rocks..we could work something out....

and from a previous post, I am going with the Event TR8s. Thanks for the review.

I'm not positive, but I believe Jackwood was used on the guitar in the article. The "article" guitar didn't even come from a patttern . . . at the luthier's request, the kid in the PeaceCorps scanned a photo of Dave Matthews' guitar from a magazine photo, traced the outline of the body with AdobeIllustrator, he then "guessed" what the dimensions SHOULD be, and then printed it out onto 8.5"x11" sheets that were tiled togther to make a "pattern . . .

I couldn't help but make that coment when i saw the Cartoon of Dopey looking at those shiney Jewels. sort of fit right in when you think about it. The Wooden Ovation must've been made with some of those shiney rocks. ;)

TWA,
The bowl is bookmatched from one piece of wood. It was carved and steamed to shape. There are no "sides" to this guitar. Each half of the pearled body seam rolls up and round attached to the top at the Mother of Pearl binding

Cliff,
That is indeed how this guitar came to be. This guitar was made in 2002 (before I even knew about OFC) and based on my shallow bowl SMT.

I wonder how that $250 would translate over here with that wood and that amount of work?
