Joined: June 2002 Posts: 1614 Location: Converse, Texas | This is a NO BS story. Very true. It occurred Monday, at 2:15 p.m. This was our first attempted bank robbery since our city was founded in 1961. We had a guy try to rob a bank in town Monday. Cept he didn't know that the tellers had to "buzz" each customer into the bank as they walked up to the door. When they saw the would-be heister walk up wearing a mask, they thought something was awry so they didn't buzz him in, but immediately hit the silent alarm that goes to our PD only about 2 miles away. It took Einstein a few minutes of pulling on the door to realize it wasn't going to open and the tellers weren't going to let him in. As he "walked" to the side of the bank to get into his truck, he pulled his mask off and looked up at the outside camera. Right next to the bank is a high school -- that was letting out at the time. And at 2:15, I have two shifts of cops -- one going off and one going on. Half of them were at the high school working traffic, so when the bank hit the silent alarm, the call came over the radio, so the cops at the school were looking toward the bank as the perp jumped into his truck and sped off. When the perp went out of the parking lot onto Converse Business Lane, he could have turned left and ended up on a main highway and sped out of town. Instead, he chose to turn right -- toward a dead end. But the story gets better. He sped right past an auto shop -- where two more off-duty Converse cops were working on a race car. After three Converse PD cars sped by chasing the perp, they decided to join in the chase themselves. The perp hits the dead end and bails into the woods -- with 6 officers making chase. Cept he was running toward one of our new subdivisions with brand spanking new roads -- and he was running uphill. Well, one of the other officers had made his way to that subdivision and -- while all the other cops were out of breath chasing this guy uphill -- the other officer was there waiting for him -- drawing down with a shotgun! This was our first ever attempted bank robbery in Converse. It seems this guy is a suspect in two other bank robberies that occured last week!

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 4413 | surely the other 2 were attempted robberies? I can't believe he got away with any. Another true cop story. About 10 or so years ago a traffic cop was on duty on the A140 in Norfolk with a hand held radar gun. The road was quiet and as he stood there an F14 flew in towards him about to land at Lakenheath US airbase. It was returning, fully nuked up, after patrolling over the Russian borders. I wonder how fast that's going thought the cop, so he pointed his gun at the plane. The minute those things detect radar beaming at them without the friendly code they automatically arm the missiles and lock on to the radar source. The pilot was minding his own business thinking about hitting the sack when the cockpit lit up and he found himself about to obliterate one of her majesty's constables and a large piece of Norfolk. He managed to override in time. The following morning new instructions were issued to all the local cops.

What'd the founder's Edsel break down on his way to Vegas? And the other two incidences he actually WAS able to rob the banks. They are smaller cities than Converse! :D

There are so many coordinating things that would have to happen that I would think it unlikely to happen as described. The radar signatures would have to approximate a threat signal, frequencies would have to be in the threat range. And the aircraft would have to be landing in 'friendly' territory with its ordinance armed. There're probably others around here that know way more than I. But the idea of a traffic cop providing a homing beacon for a smart bomb is prett amusing.

It is fenced off and a fair distance from the road. So I was talking on the phone and, suddenly, all hell broke loose, when an F 14 took off just over the top of my car (well it felt like it was really close). The guy on the end of the phone asked what the hell was that noise and I explained where I was parked. I suspect the cop was in the same layby. Piers of Kent

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 4413 | Chatman - thinking back I figure this was actually 20 years ago. We were living in the area at the time and it was the Reagan/Thatcher years. There were no smart bombs and that whoile friendly/enemy radar thing was in its infancy. And I did read it from a magazine called The Inspector which is a cop comic for police of that rank and above (approx your lieutenants) Piers - we used to live there and the real ball-breakers were the A10 tankbusters which used to use cars on minor roads for target practice. You would be tootling along and suddenly this black shape would rise up over the horizon and come straight at you about 100 feet above your head. The other great joy of living ther4e was the fact that yankee airmen used to get their cars airlifted over from the states and then sell them for big bucks in England when their tour was over. You would be driving down a narrow Norfolk road to be greeted by a 15 foot wide caddy coming the other way. Gosh we loved Americans. Schroeder from Kent

Idiot lowlife snatches a ladies purse in front of Broward County Courthouse, runs away, and runs right into a concrete post and knocks himself out. Making things a bit of a bad day, paramedics get their truck total'd in an accident with the lumpy headed crook in the back. Paramedics got out. I think they left the crook in the rescue truck, strapped down. It was on its side..... Makes me wonder why some crooks even get outta bed in the morning.
