Since I am new to the world of Ovation, I have a question about the Collector Series. Is it regular practice for Ovation to release a Collector each year? If so, when does information about the new model start to circulate? I would guess that this site would be a good place to get that information.

well last year they did not offer a collectors guitar but they did this year.
there has been a ton of discusssion about the validity of that model over the years but I can tell you for sure that this year's model is a winner

Collectors series started in 82. pretty much every year there has been a collector guitar or some other special version. Usually work starts to slip out around November or so. Recently it's been a little jumbled between collectors guitars, reissues, and new models. For example in '04 there was not an official collector guitar, but there was the CL-30 reissue. for '05 there is a true collector guitar 2005-ES, but also a new model U681, some adamas reissues, and some new Ovation LX versions. Plus the flame painted T's, Flag Legends, etc. I'm starting to loose track, but the good thing is that there is almost always something cool to add to the 'wish list'. New version adamas and shiny bowl reissues is the semi-confirmed rumor for 2006.

Jim,
Check the Ovation website and go to the link at the lower left for the collector's series. It will give you thumbnails of each of the collector's. Some of them are more for looks than for sound, but all have something unique. I like the 99 myself. I play it more than my other ones, if for no other reason than it is just so good looking.

Is 1999 the only year they didn't do a fret inlay in the Collector's series? Seems like every other year I've seen has one. Jim, when you do your research, maybe you could answer this for me.

The 05 has the NIKE SWASH, but it doesn't have the year on it.

First, thanks everyone for the information. I know a lot more now!

paulmac, great page!

Mark in Boise, here is what I found by looking at the pictures in paulmac's link:

'82-no, '83-yes, '86-yes, '88-yes, '92-yes, '93-yes, '94-yes, '95-yes, '96-yes, '97-no, '98-yes, '01-yes, '02-yes, of course the '05 has a 12 fret inlay. I am sure that I have missed a few, but that is what the pictures revealed in terms of inlays.

Take a look at the Ovation webpage. They detail all the Collector's series. Some were innovative and exciting, and some, while good guitars, were just dogs.

My 2002 Collectors, although it may be considered to be a "dog" due to the laminate top, sounds AWFULLY good to me. I suspicion it has an early form of the LX neck (truss rod cover and it is LIGHT).

My local GC just got in a new 2005 Collectors, and I can tell you....IT IS A WINNER. Can you say "deep bowl LX"????? Sure you can.

let us not forget that the beloved Adamas is a LAMINATED top

I have a 2000 Collectors with a lam top. It is very sweet. This'll probably get me a one-way ticket out of the OFC, but I've got to admit that I think it plays better and sounds better than my 1537. And I do love the sound of the 1537.

Ok. You're outta here!

No, seriously, we can make generalizations about guitars, but each and every guitar is different. Hell, for that matter, everybody's ear is different.

Ovation made a koa laminated top a while back for Guitar Centers. I remember playing one and being really impressed by it.

I think the 88 was pretty much a bowser and the other 16 fret neck with a deep bowl. The bridge is just too far forward to get any souuund.
The laminated tops by themselves are not a reason to be canine, as (a)L(e)X has said, it's how you put the rest of the pkg together.

The 2002 Collectors was bought on its SOUND. Very pretty guitar, but the sound sold it. There is a richness and bottom end that is not common in a mid-bowl.

Bill,

As I recalled, master Templeman is rather fond of the '88 and so am I. It has a very unique (almost dreadnought) sound and the extra two frets are cool too. I am also sucker for the pewter finish.

Hi There,
In your list, you missed the 1985 Collectors Editions (6 & 12 string).I just bought last week the '85 12 string, with the beautiful Autumn Burst, multi-hole solid spruce top, with Super thin body.I had heard they were hard to play standing up, with the round back.Rubbish! It is the most comfotable acoustic I have played standing or seated.I have yet to get the Pre Amp working, but I bet the sound amplified will be great (OP24).I don't mind the treble bias of the unplugged sound- almost like a mandolin edge to it.So my first Ovation experience has been good!I am watching with interest the Melissa Etheridge 12 string - yet to read a report on it. Strangely, here in Australia Ovations are not often available retail or second hand.

Sounds like an opportunity!
Let's pool some cash and open an OFC guitar store!
