Sadly my new 2005 has issues. After playing it for a few days I noticed that the notes in the higher frets were a little sharp. I took it to my Luthier friend and the prognosis was bad, pitch problem from the neck to the body and a little twist. That is why the action was so high and according to him was probably not fixable. The good news is GC is going to get me a new one, should be in next week. This 2005 is going back to ovation.

I don’t know if it's important as I have no idea what happens to Collectors Edition Guitars if they have problems, but the serial number was 412 so that might be one to watch out for.

I checked mine - things are a little sharp at the 12th fret. Hasn't been enough to bother me. Anyone else who can comment?

When I got mine, checked it out (to the 12th fret) and the intonation was perfect.

Hey Bob

The other thing on mine was the action. It was really high and that was what led my guitar guy to look at the neck pitch. The thing he said that caught my attention was that this kind of problem tends to get worse with age. If your not sure it might not hurt to have someone look at it just for your peace of mind. Yours might just need a little adjustment.

The action on mine was a little high. Took it to a shop and they removed one of the shims. Now it's better than before.

My intonation is perfect and the action is low.
I do however have some yellow spots on the binding.

Gonna take care of the U681 issues and then talk to the mothership about the '05 cosmetic issue.

Stephen, I had yellow spots as well. Take a little "softscrub" or "barkeepers friend" and gently scrub the binding and the spots should clean up. Dave

I understood Cliff was the "barkeepers friend".

Really this was a good experience I learned a lot about what to look for in a guitar and how little I knew about the finer details of guitar construction. All my previous instruments were pawn shop/garage sale specials.

The guys at my local Guitar Center were great. The minute I had issues they were ready to get a new 2005 in ASAP, no questions asked.

The interesting bit is how intricate a guitar really is, how close the tolerances have to be and how little room for error there is to get a really fine instrument. Remember were talking about 64ths if an inch. All this when working with wood, which sometimes has mind of its own. The problem with my 2005 was really very subtle I had to look long and hard to see it even after it was pointed out to me. The intonation at the 12th fret was just a little off if I wasn’t running scales I would have probably never noticed it until I tried to get the action lowered. Its almost amazing that anyone can make a good guitar.

Can’t wait to get my new 2005, should be in next week

Dan

Dave,
Maybe the brain is fuzzy today but I am not familiar with either of those products. Can you be a bit more specific for the intellectually challenged?

Stephen, they are probably in the kitchen section of your grocery store; they're meant for cleaning sinks and metal surfaces without scratching. Barkeepers Friend is an old item for cleaning rust off of metal gently also, used to use it on chrome bumpers on cars.

If they're as nice as everyone's been saying, and they keep selling 'em, if Ovation's smart they'll stop makin' 'em around 3pm on Dec. 31st, '05 . . .

They actually had one at GC when I picked up my 6778LX. But for $550 more, I couldn't make myself do it.
The Elite is so sweet sounding and pretty, and I just didn't see that much difference in the quality.
Desirable? Absolutely. Maybe I'll pick one up in a few years...

Upon further review I retract my previous statement. It's dead on. Must have been my careless fingers after a long night of playing...

There was never an issue with the action.

It appears I found the only bad 2005 Collectors in existance. I was a little leary buying it because it was so new. New one should be here Wednesday

Dave, I gently scrubbed my ass off with the "soft scrub". Helped a little but the 3 spots are still quite visible.

Guess I gonna try the "barkeeper's friend". Where do I find that?

Dan, thanks for letting everyone know about it, it helped. I THOROUGHLY checked over the one I bought before dropping the money because of your post. And mine is awfully close to the one you had numerically (I have 388, I believe you had 412).

Action might be a touch high, but I'm fine with it. The sound is soooooo good, I would never change anything.
