I am going to open myself up to the group with this question. I have a high end, limited edition Taylor (XXX-RS), and am thinking about selling it to fund a U681T. I read all the posts in "Look what UPS delivered", so I am aware of some of the issues with this instrument.

I am afraid that the Taylor is going to sit in the case, as being "too nice to play". It is a really nice instrument, and one that over time will be nice to have. Just not sure I will sit on it that long. The Adamas however, should see more action.

I am looking for pro/cons on this.

Taylor makes a nice guitar. But if you did a blind sound test of the Taylor and the U681, I think you'd be surprised at the results.

Ovations are meant to be taken out and used. Taylors are meant to be......

The U681T is a sound monster and one of the best guitars Ovation has ever made. There have been some complaints about cosmetics but no one has dissed the sound.

Make the move....I am 95% sure you won't believe how much better the O sounds.....and like Paul mentioned, it is meant to be taken out and used, not stored under the bed for future eye candy.

hi,
I LOVE the tone and playability (?) of the u681t. I have played it every day that it and I have been in the same house together. I am more then happy with it and would buy it again, sight unseen in a heartbeat. ....but then again this is just my 1.5 cents worth. mike

I recently heard a really competant guitarist Marc Seal (www.marc seal.com) try to play an acoustic lead-solo-set on a Taylor belonging to the lady who leads worship at our church. Now, let me start by saying the Talyor is very nice (not sure what series). I played it a couple of weeks before and thought it was out of my league, but Marc was way too much guitarist for it. he kept tweaking the expression system try to get it to respond correctly to the licks he was laying down. I wasn't working for his style, and I told him as much. I handed him my U681T. He had to set down the brand new American Strat (really nice) he had just received and proceeded to try for "the limit" of the 681. Everything from fast light arpegios to full on power chords just sang. He didn't want to hurt me feelings so he just said what what eveyone says "Wow, this thing plays really nice!!" There is one downside. I have to be VERY careful when I play it in a small group setting, because if I make a mistake, EVERYONE will hear it.

jim, your xxx-rs sounds & looks incredibly good. very collectible too. u681 sounds good too. i've been telling people to buy it since day 1. if i were you, i would keep the taylor & get u681 also.

buy from major store like www.music123.com
the adamas they get from the factory should be of high quality.

$1700 + shipping (or $1749 Free shipping)
$59/month with no interest

or get a used one for around $1200 in few months.
people will sell the blemished ones quietly.

Jim, You'll reget letting that Taylor go. It's a nice one and very difficult to replace in the future when you change your mind. Of course same thing is true about the U681. Sucks when there's two expensive, beautiful things and you want both of them. I'm in a similar quandry over my wife vs. my lover. JUST KIDDING, DEAR !!!

Mr Adamas, are you implying smaller dealers will get guitars of lesser quality otherwise. I may have misunderstood you, so please correct me if I am mistaken. I don't think the size or location of dealers make any difference to the quality of the guitars. It's a pity some guitars escaped QC with problems, but I don't think the shipping department knows which ones are better to send to bigger dealers.

can you tell the difference between "of high quality" & "of highER quality"?

i totally understand why you misunderstood coz 9 out of 9 u681 sold by 1 small dealer had problems.

It wasn't the dealers fault.
It was the factory that sent them out so put the blame where it is due....poor QC checking at the door!

Those of us that bought our 12-frets from Al took advantage of the fact that Al placed some of the first orders...check some of the serial numbers being sold by the "big" stores. Our orders were made well before NAMM. We had them in our hands before the other stores had them in inventory.

As we have observed, it was some of the first production that had a problem.

When we had a problem, we were able to talk directly with our dealer, not just one of the staff of a larger dealer.

Al has gone "to bat" for us to help resolve our concerns.

Al's price on my new 2004-2005 purchases have yet to be beat by any of the "large stores." My purchases include two 30th Anniv CL's, a demo 30th CL Anniv, two 1777LX's, tenor uke, 2005 Collector's, and the 12-fret. In each case, I have not been disappointed in my dealer.

Personally, I will continue to go directly to Al for any new Ovation, Adamas, or Hamer product.

I like a good conspiracy theory as much as anyone, but let's be real here. With all due respect to my friends in the factory, there's NO WAY these guys are sly enough to run a sophisticated scam that intentionally diverts lessor quality product to small dealers. It just does not happen. There are reasons to buy from a large on-line chain, and there are reasons not to. Everyone makes their own determination. But to think there is a pre-dispositioned difference in product quality between the two is just too far fetched. Dave

Dang - I miss that guitar! Why'd you have to remind me? I used to have a matching sports coat that I'd wear while playing out. It used to make the audience dizzy. Dave

All I can see is the Tom Petty music video where they are cutting into the cake/Alice. Gotta quit having pizza for breakfast.
