Getting ready to put my apartment on the market, which means I need to create some space. This is turn means that all my guitars have been cased up, and taken over to my Mother's place for a holiday.

You never realise how much you'll miss something until it's gone. I've had a guitar in arm's reach constantly (excepting work!) for 12 years since I started playing, and now I have nothing. This must be GAS cold-turkey, as I clearly can't afford to buy any more in the foreseeable future too, so not only can I not play, I can't even look forward to taking delivery. I can feel the shakes kicking in already.

Let's hope I sell quickly, find a house, and can get everyone unpacked again. Anyone want an Apartment in the Isle of Man? Close enough to the TT course, although not so close that they wake you...

Anyone else ever had to go cold turkey like this?

JB

Yes and it is not pretty. When I moved to Colorado in the 80's (ahead of my family by 6 months), I only took what the car could hold, which meant no guitars. Didn't realize how lonely I would be without the family, nothing to do at night (and no guitar to console me).

After about 6 weeks, my wife flew in to go house hunting with me and I had her bring in one of my guitars on the plane. Loneliest 6 weeks of my life. Don't think I could have made it the whole 6 months without a guitar.

I feel for you!

Statistics show that homes sell better with a nice guitar displayed openly on a stand. It shows that the owner not only takes good care of his property but that he has filled the home with joy that will linger far after he has moved out.
Now go get you best looking Ovation, display it proudly and make yourself some money.

P.S. I made this all up but it sounds really good and logical to me.

Bentman,
Are you a realtor? My wife dragged me to a Parade of Homes recently and in this really expensive master suite was a Martin on a stand. I wondered why it was sitting there, as opposed to other rooms that seemed more logical for a music room. Your theory makes more sense than any I could come up with. I heard of the baked bread theory. Told my wife she couldn't buy a house owned by a Martin guy.

Thanks for the compliment Mark but I'm not a realtor, although I could be, especially since I always sell my own homes and never used one. I've been house hunting for two years (daily) and know the business fairly well. Couldn't find a match so we're building a house in the middle of ten wooded acres.
I honestly think JB should display one of his guitars. I sold a condo one time that had my beautiful mahogany 18 foot Sea kayak hanging from the vaulted ceiling. It's not the normal thing you'd see but people loved it. The first person that saw the place bought it.
We need to make our homes a showroom when people come to look at it but not a museum. There needs to be life in it. A guitar is a perfect addition.

Guys, you are missing the obvious. YES, life without a guitar can be hell. But a good stop-gap solution is ... (taa daa)... a UKULELE.

I'm currently 6 days into a 3+ week business trip covering three continents before finally back home June 9th. I'm carrying a concert size ukulele with me and I play it all the time. It fits easily in my carry on bag and isn't so loud as to bother the next room in the hotel. Yeah sure it isn't exactly the same satisfaction as an 05 Collector but it's a hell of a lot of fun and keeps me from going crazy.

I just sat rocking back and forth on the floor playing "Eve of Destruction" 27 times in a row. I think it's working ...

Eve of Destruction on a uke. I can't think of a suitable remark. Have a safe journey home.

Oh, I've got this whole "lonely away from home, sleep deprived, work-a-holic" setlist. Pretty good stuff if I say so myself.

21st Century Schitszoid Man (King Crimson)
Eve Of Destruction (Barry McGuire)
White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)
Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel)
Here Comes The Flood (Peter Gabriel)

You get the idea ...

Cheers, guys. You're making it easier! Glad that I was right in keeping the Uke! I had to really, as I'm playing support for the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain during June, and I believe they take guest appearances! Get in.

Last night wasn't too bad, as I had a band rehearsal, followed by coming home and watching the Champions League Final on video. I'm so happy to be a Liverpool fan this morning!

Schroder - thanks for the website comment. Little bit bare at the moment, but we're only just getting some momentum...

Waskel - loved that cartoon! That will be finding it's way round the Isle of Man very shortly indeed!

The shakes are still here, but currently because I only got 4 hours sleep last night...

Thanks again for making me feel normal. I think that statement says something about us all here.

JB - You're playing with UOOGB ??? I LOVE them. That is so amazing. I've got to see if I can get to a show. Now you REALLY have my blood boiling.

Yeah that match last night was incredible. I work in Eindhoven. Too bad PSV lost to AC in the semis. Would have been a cool Liverpool - PSV final. Congrats to the Brits. At the half I assumed the match was over. Who would have guessed a comeback like that!

Actually we're just a bunch of wanna-be musicians / internet geeks who have no life outside of this forum.

I honestly have no idea what I did with all my time 2688 posts ago. maybe I actually PLAYED my guitars back then.

Huh ??? I swear to you I am not 12 years old. I am honestly as old, greying, out of shape, etc. as I claim. I'm truely every bit as pathetic as I lead you to believe. Dave

Did I just write that?
