Somehow, I just bought, on the 'bay, a guitar that I never intended to buy

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7333880136

I threw up a $201 bid expecting the guitar to go to $4-500. So for less than $300 (real high shipping cost), I'm going to be the proud owner of a 23 year old GC 1627.

Now the good news is that it was built in 1982 and has the A bracing, so the sound, while not deep, is very good. This particular model was shown at the gathering last month and is going to be offered next year as one of the limited edition models. The one I played was terrific. I loved Rick Hall's answer as to why they are building this model instead of a GC shiny bowl. He said that he used to have a GC Artist and always regretted selling it. Now he can have another one.

Moody,
I did a similar thing on ebay with a motor drive/winder for my Hasselblad.I placed a bid on this item. The day after the auction ended I just decided to check out what happened. The item brand new usually goes for about $1,200. Used, it usually goes for $475-$675. My bid was $405 and won it. I had to tell Pearl the good news/bad news story.
The good news is that I got this item at a great price and the bad news is that I had to come up with the money really fast.
Congratulations on the great win. I guess you could call stories like this "Siting on the Dock of the Bay".

I got the Preacher Deluxe the same way... my boss was looking for a nice made in USA guitar so I threw a bid just to stay in the mix... fully expecting it to go much higher... meanwhile I found him a nice '97 USA strat w/lots of upgrades(sperzels, texas specials, graftek saddles) that he decided to go with instead(it matches his corvette great reason to buy a guitar).

checked the bay a couple of days later and it was mine,

nice catch tho, congratulations to you on yours.

God Bless,

Glenn

Great pickup, Mr. Moody. Which of your current collection will you be donating to the Ovation Collectors museum to make room for the GC? You can choose between the SoCal, Southwest, and Rocky Mtn branches of the museum. Dave

Lucky son of a gun, what a deal! absolutely the deal of the year to say the least.

I've had plenty Adamas, Legends, Balladeers, Folklores, etc. and the Glen Campbell 1627 is my all time favorite Ovation steel string model.
It has that great look with the bound fretboard with the diamond inlays, which really looks great, and by the way, I have always wondered why the old Adamas doesn't have a bound neck with the diamonds on an ebony fingerboard, that is "THE" O trademark to me besides the roundback.
Plus it has the Artist bowl, super comfortable.

Beautiful! Congratulations!

Hey Paul that is just like mine, only yours doesn't look warped! It's in southern Cal, why not save the $75 and go pick it up?

Nice grab, Paul!

It amazes me how some of these great guitars can still be had so cheaply. For many of us, this is all the acoustic we would ever really need...for two hundred and change.

Since you didn't mean to buy it, I'll give you $201 for it.

I'm a little apprehensive. I sent payment online yesterday morning and despite sending a couple of emails asking when the guitar would be shipped, haven't heard anything from the seller.

I'm going on vacation next week. There had better be word or a guitar back from this guy.

Footnote:

Never got the guitar. I paid for it on Friday morning and never heard back from the seller. Went out of town on Monday and got back yesterday. I found an email from Monday stating that I needed a paypal confirmed address (I paid thru paypal and sent the seller an address, but not a "paypal confirmed" address). I had even offered to go pick up the guitar in person (a 5 hour roundtrip drive) but the seller wouldn't do that.

I emailed the seller with my address and got an email back saying that he was refunding my money (minus $15 ebay fees) but that if I still wanted the guitar I could provide him with the paypaly confirmed address and resend the money (minue the ebay fees).

I told him no thanks, go ahead and relist it for the third time.

So any of you that want the guitar and are willing to go thru hoops for it, go for it. I think the seller is honest, but paranoid.

My grandpa always used to tell me, "When you smell dog shit, look at the soles of your shoes and sure enough, you'll find dog shit".

By the way, did the seller ever defend how he could charge you $70. for shipping the thing a few area codes away? Seems like a rip off.
