87 collectors

I know this is on the short list of a few of our members....needs a little work so might be a steal for someone looking to make a grab!

I'll watch the auction, but if I'm going for the OFC'er, my wife would kill me for buying this. Too bad, because it is on my very short list (along with an FD14). Oh well.... next year.

Focus, Paul, focus!

The best way to resist GAS is to focus on an upcoming GASP - Guitar Aquisition Serious Purchase. If you can coordinate this with a WHAP (Wife Has Another Plan), as it seems you have, it is best to stick to the strategy. In fact, I think you have hit on the motherload of situations better known as Somehow Her Idea Too!
Stay the course Buddy!

That is a nice guitar though!

The trade off for the OFC'er is that my wife is getting granite countertops in the kitchen. There's always a balance in these things.....

I feel your pain, Paul. Went out with my wife to pick out panelling for our cabin remodel last night. Came home with a patio table, chairs and a bunch of other stuff, but not the panelling. If a wife can buy something just because it's on sale, we ought to be able to buy any guitar on ebay because it's on sale.

Mark, I would assume that as an attorney, you would be good at argueing your case! ;)

There's no pain Mark. I feel fortunate in that I have as many wonderful guitars that I do. Not bad for a guy with only 3 chords....

Just looked, and since no one else had made a move... I did. I am not deeply committed, so no one who really wants an 87 need hold back on my account.

If nobody else bids, it will be a really awesome deal at $400. Good luck Paul.

Stephen,
The assumption about winning an argument is probably correct. But you never win an argument when the judge is on the other side.
I actually have a blessed life. Wife is using her inheritance to pay for the cabin remodel, although the cost overruns have used that up. She supports my Porsche habit, just insisted that I get a different shade of red this time. I could go on and on, but it's more fun to whine.

I do know of somebody who's watching this auction (not me) and it would be good for his perception of Ovations to get it......

Getting another guitar is always a challenge with a wife around who is agenda challenged! But, I got by it this time with my wife by turning to her and saying, " Say Happy Birthday, Baby!"

Hey at $75 bucks, I figure, I'm a pretty cheap date anyway.

LOL

I bought one for Valentine's day, one for my birthday and 2 at the end of May. One didn't come till Father's Day, so that was OK, but the other one, all I could come up with was my daughter's graduation. Didn't go over too well. Anniversary in 2 weeks. That has been tried and failed. Even tried the trade for jewelry, but she doesn't seem to agree that guitars are way more useful and beautiful than diamonds.
Try, "Shall I get a new Porsche or a new guitar."
My problem there is she knows I don't really want a new Porsche and she wants mine if I get a new one.

I have been outbid, so someone from this board needs to go get this guitar now.

Somebody from the OFC needs to keep this in the family. Looks like it might be a great deal for someone.

The '87 collectors is an awesome sounding guitar....maybe slightly better than the 1537's.

Nick....I agree. I hope you can get it.
Not only that, it would be easy to move if you wanted to sell.
Also Nick....we have been passing around a large format book call "The History of Ovation". As the book moves around we add our own Ovation history and pass it on. Perhaps you would like to have this book come to you for a turn? The only commitment you have to make is to mail it to the next person on the list when you are done with it.
If you are interested, look for the "Is the book still on the move?" thread.

Tried to send it to my wife's email address with a note, "Anniversary present?" but it didn't seem to go through. Our 28th is August 13, so that means 1987 was our 10th and as far as I recall, she didn't get me anything for that one. She's doesn't pick up on these hints very well.

I think the 87 would be a perfect "first" Ovation for Nick. Absolutely brilliant that he went out and found it..... Hope he gets it.

Does this mean after it goes past Nick's limit ($500ish) we can all pile on?

I dunno.....If the collective "we" want to give Nick a shot at it maybe "we" can give him a little wiggle room.
Besides...he might not keep it long...than again...

From the seller: It is simply just a binding repair. There are no inlays missing. Further, there is no damage to the neck. It is common for the binding to crack on guitars as they age and nothing else is wrong with this guitar I would not suggest sending it to Kaman/Ovation as they will charge alot more than the job is worth. It is just a small, 3 inch piece of binding.

Question seller's statement as to sending it to the factory and that it is "common" for binding to crack. It does appear that there may not be other damage to the neck. Personally, I would have it go to the factory for the TLC it deserves.

Sure, would like to see Nick (or other in the OFC) get it...problem is that I often see the OFC'er drop out at the last minute or the OFC'er be outbid by $5 when the guitar is worth more.

At same time, absurd to merely bid up the price if not a "need."
