| I went out to look at/buy a 2002 Gibson L4CES. I've wanted one for as long as I can remember but they are pretty rare everywhere but specially so in the UK - like all of those Custom Shop archtops they are in the Gibson catalogue but they only make them to order - but one appeared in a shop 50 miles away so off I went.
It was a big disappointment - I played one once about 15 years ago and thought it was fantastic, but it just didn't do anything for me this time round. Looked around the shop and what do I see? The Tal Farlow. Picked it up and POW - love at first touch. Gorgeous neck - very ute-like in shape and substance and one of the unique things(for a Gibson) about the Tal is that it is a 25.5" scale which I much prefer.
It is in absolutely amazing condition - there's a scuff mark on the case and that's it as far as I can see. Although it's not deep by archtop standards at 2 7/8" it's got a beautiful acoustic tone, truly vintage Gibson archtop sound. Plug it in and you realise why every pickup manufacturer makes a copy of the original PAFs - these are vintage 57s and they sound glorious, a perfect match to the body. Thick, woody sound, dripping with harmonics and almost no sustain. Clean as a whistle. Run it through a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal with just a touch of drive and it breaks up just like Barney Kessel thrashing a Charlie Christian pickup.
The only downside is that I traded my epi archtop which has been a friend for the last 6 or 7 years and this is the first time there hasn't been an epi archtop in the house for about 20 years.
I'm a happy, happy man. |

I've always wanted a jazz box but my playing style just doesn't lend itself to one (nor does my playing ability)..... |

| A Joe Pass (Mark I). fantastic value for money. I played lots costing 3 times as much that weren't as good. Don't know about the Mk II - ask the prof. But a used Mk I would be fantastic.
The thing with archtops is they have such a distinctive sound that you sound like Joe Pass even if you only know three chords ( :p ) - like playing a Macaferri, you can't help but sound like a tenth rate Django. Actually I'd settle for sounding like a tenth rate Django. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | With respect to the Epi Joe Pass II, here's an illustrative story. We did a pure jazz concert last year. During the rehearsals, I took five archtops to experiment with and let the band and sound techs choose which one they thought provided the best "smooth" jazz tone. The guitars were a vintage Gibson ES-335CRSTD (played in both single and dual coil configurations), Gibson ES-135 with P90s, vintage Gretsch CG, Guild Starfire IV, and the Epi Joe Pass II with Be-Bop jazz strings. To my surprise, they unanimously chose the Joe Pass, the least expensive of the lot, and that is what I used during the gig. |
