As a friend of mine says, there are three good shows on TV today: Andy Griffith at 5:30, Andy Griffith at 7:30, and Andy Griffith at 10:00.

I believe I was watching the Flintstones before I ever really paid attantion to Barney Fife on Re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show. In fact, by the time I remember watching the Andy Griffith Show, Barney was already gone and they were starting the trend of the show that would become mayberry RFD.

Otis: "Barney's in jail! Barney's in jail!" Andy: "Would you pipe down, Otis!? Just pipe down!" (I've seen the rerun of that one too many times, obviously: my wife bought the video of it somewhere...)

It was a show that took Americans from the harsh reality of nearly live Network coverage of Vietnam and our era of painful puberty and brought them into a small town where a father and son could always make time for fishing and eating home baked pies. You trusted Andy and took comfort that you weren't quite as scattered as Barney.
