hey,
i HATE pings...there, i got that off my chest.
i have a new 1778LX and was planning on installing a set of schallers, but the screw holes are on the side of the schallers, and the bottom with the pings. the back mounting of the pings look almost exactly like grover romantics (not the buttons obviously) i'd like to try them out, then add some grover ebony buttons, which are more "square" in appearance, similar to the ping/schaller buttons- compared to the kidney-shaped gold romantic buttons...to keep a more standard look, which i like- or i'd just throw a set of waverly's on and never look back...

so i'm wondering if anyone has done the same with romantics...any pics? success/distress stories?
BTW- did i mention that i F-ing HATE ping machines?? and if you have to ask me why so, please do not bother :p

I think the Grovers are called Rotomatics. IMHO, they are OK but not that great ... my son has a set on his Epiphone, but the Pings on my 2000 are a lot better.

So why do you hate Pings?

My favorite keys are Schallers, but I see no reason to change the Ping keys.

More importantly, why are you so hostile to people knowing why you hate them?

It would be interesting to do a blind test between grover, ping and schaller tuners. Have someone tune up a guitar blind folded. Feel the tuners. Feel how they work, how smooth, etc. And see if they could tell which was which. My bet is they could not tell. I know I could not. Weight would be the only give away and the knock against the grovers is how heavy they are. There is a difference between hating ping tuners and hating the fact that your guitar came with ping tuners. Dave

the instrument stays in tune fine. it's getting it in tune (alt tuning/new strings- which i do once a week, at least)that is painfully less than perfect. blindfolded or not, the pings are nowhere as smooth as grovers. and grovers are no schallers, which in turn are no waverly's...
the difference between pings(junk) and superior machines is obvious to me...guys who cannot tell the difference should do a little research i guess. :p

That'd be me - nowhere near smart enough to be able to tell the difference. Of course, I just picked up my 4th chord this weekend ... amazing what sounds you gat get when you add an Em to your arsenal of G, C and D!

Try a set of Grovers and let us know. I would agree that the best keys now are the Waverlies but they just don't look right on an Ovation.

Do you feel the same way about the Ping putter? I know many people have been switching to the Odyssey and liking the results, although they still like the Ping irons. As for drivers, Taylor and Cleveland seem to be in the lead there. Any points you can give here would be apreciated as well.

Hal, I think you got some clinkers. Or maybe use different tuning methods. Some include,
tuning off the high e string harmonic 12th fret, to the b string 7th fret etc.
or
use the old reliable 5th and 7th fret harmonics
or
use octave tuning, e at 7th fret a to open e, etc
even if I use a tuner I cross reference with one of these just to make sure.

In the spectrum of (not my definition) ping's suck, grovers OK, schallers good, weaverly best. Where does Gotoh fit in?

These come on a lot of Martin guitars in the upper end of the Ovation price range (D18 and stuff like that). I had them on a 00-18 and thought they were fine. I totally agree with the comments about the weaverly's, they are great. People look at the open gears on my slot and say "wow, that look's kind of cheap" - yeah, right? I'm having a martin built right now and I'd be embarrased to post here how much up-charge I'm paying for the Weaverly's. It's criminal but worth every penny.

I have Gotoh on the Lowden. They are really smooth, and more easily turned (...higher mechanical advantage?) than the schallers on my O&A's.

I like the Schallers just fine...but, the Gotoh sweet.

A lot of times when people complain about tuners, what they've really got is a problem with strings hanging up on the nut. I've got an old GC 12 string and one of these days, that nut's going to be replaced (already replaced the tuners, going from the early Klusons to the later Schallers).

Cliff, why don't you handle this one. It's still to early in AZ to roll out my best stuff ...

Seriously, this is not joke - isn't there something called "nut sauce" that's supposed to lube the strings in the nut?

Make sure you get underneath, or you will still get sticky nuts.

You know, that's one of the things that I hate about this board. I'm trying to be serious and discuss problems I've faced with parts of my guitars' anatomies, and you guys are making jokes.

Of course my nuts are large and made out of brass...

helps in my line of work.

In all seriousness (as if that's possible here), I DO wish I had Schallers on my 6778 LX rather than Pings; furthermore, I had an '02 CL 12 with Pings that I REEEEELY wished had Schallers. That said, the only reason for my chagrin was that I know and appreciate the difference in finish, machining, and overall workmanship. I never noticed a difference in performance. I've never owned a guitar with Gotohs but I like what I see when I see them in the music stores. I get the impression they're more on-par with Schallers than Grovers, and Gotohs seem to have more interesting choices for buttons. What's the footprint on a Gotoh compared to Pings? And where can you even get Gotohs aftermarket?
