Because I have no life (read: I have kids), I'm not out hitting the jazz joints tonight (not that there are any around here). So, I figured I'd give you all an update, not that anyone cares.

The Elite is in the case, awaiting new strings (Elixir polywebs, .012) which are in my 'guitar box.'

The Hamer (thanks, Al!) is back in the case and safe from my depredations.

The Cropper is on a stand (hihi...avoiding the Attack of the Hafnium Carbide latches now) next to my chair. I forgot how fantastic the neck is on this thing. Many laugh because it's a lowly Peavey, but I'll tell you what...it's a great guitar. Steve Cropper wouldn't lie, would he? ;)

The Steinberger is in it's gig bag, behind my chair, awaiting my loving touch again. I haven't decided what to do with it. I may just take Al's advice and play it until the frets are gone. It needs a string change anyway, so maybe I can Flitz out some of the ribs. Right. I miss it.

So far this week, I've resisted the temptation to buy several jazz boxes (from Epis to Gibbys to Ibanez to Hamer) and several Adamaii. On the non-guitar side, I got to tour one of Dow Corning's Challenger 604s (holy bejeebuz they're nicely appointed...glass cockpits rule!) while awaiting my wife's arrival on the other.

And I've hoisted not one, but two (count 'em, two!) pints of Guinness (Extra Stout, not that crap stuff) in honor of Schroeder.

How was your week?

Pretty crappy compared to yours! Glad to see someone enjoying it and I will do my best to also hoist a couple to Schroeder (and hell....a couple to you also)!

This time of year, any week I spend more than 4 days at home and off the road is a great week. Even if, in what seems a celebratory gesture, the resident pooch brings home various and "former" fur bearing varmits.

The Lowden is just the sweetest thing ever. I've been having a blast finding my way around it. I timed the sustain of the D string 12th fret harmonic. It was audible to the naked ear for 13 seconds. Just amazing. Even in the midst of my infatuation with the Lowden, I still manage to make the rounds on the O's.

Schroeder will appreciate you taking up the slack in the Guinness consumption. They need someone to keep them afloat till he is back in good drinking shape.

Tomorrow?...Out with the old office desk and in with the new....

Here's my Friday night.
Headed out to a community center way out in the country, just to play not perform. Took another guy with me. About a mile from where we were going we came across a car pulled over. Young fellow and wife and child. His car got hot, we went on to our destination and came back with a bucket of water, poured some in, he tried to start it and engine compression blew the water back (blown headgasket at the least).
I couldn't leave them by the side of the road, so took them to the next town, about 10 miles. When we got there, I asked him what he was going to do. He said all he could do was call his grandmother to come and get them. I knew she was old and it would soon be dark. So took them to where they were going, another 25 miles.
By the time I got back to where we were going to play everyone was ready to go home. Didn't even unlatch my case.
It was, however, the easiest set up and take down
ever.

The world is his office. That's why the desk is such a big problem. Plus he always seems to be here.

As much as I would like to be learning my way around a Lowden (leave it to Whitehead to pick up one of those), I am having fun with my new Legend LX. I expected it to be very similar to my Elite LX. I am happy to discover they really have different voices. One is not fundamentally better than the other, although I think I prefer the tone of the Legend overall. The Elite seems warmer, the Legend bolder.
Ah, another flavor! Now I just gotta get me one a those 'A's!

I unpacked an new (to me) Celebrity, adjusted the neck and played a three hour show at which nothing was thrown at the band - score it a success and the guitar sounded nice thorugh a new Roland amp. Nice time.

True story: In 10th grade, we were all called (individually) into the counselor's office to discuss our future plans. My counselor was Ms. something-or-other. Can't remember her real name, but everyone referred to her as 'Sandpaper Sally.' Anyway, after discussing my lack of interest in school work, she inquired as to my post-high school plans. My response was, 'I intend to become a kept man.'

I didn't get called into her office again until just before graduation when she told me I had enough credits and a sufficient GPA to graduate. Looking back, I think I should have stuck with my original plan.

Here's how my Friday went ... and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise too, considering it's something I don't get to do these days...

Friday morning, Mrs. ignimbyte asked me to give her a ride to work. Hmm ... I work days and she works evenings, so it's unusual for her to take the day shift, given that she is not a morning person. Quitting time, I picked her up from work, and was surprised to see my sister-in-law and her husband along. Something must be up ... then they told me that we're going to grab a bite, but it was imperative that I parked my car and took the 7 train with them, so I did.

To make a long story short, there I was at Shea Stadium, watching a Mets game with the wife, her sister and her husband. I don't follow baseball that much, but it was a pleasant surprise, and it turned out to be a great game too, especially when Pedro pitched all nine innings and shut out the Braves. After the game, we head out to a sports bar in Bell Blvd., and enjoyed some good hefeweiss brew ... the pints kept coming!

Saturday morning, I realized that some of the great places to go, and great things to do are right here in my own backyard, and yet I don't get to appreciate it, and that I should make an effort to. Whenever my folks from out of town visit me, they would pester me with a lot of stuff -- from being part of the street audience for the Today Show to catch a glimpse of Katie, Matt and Al at Rockefeller Center to buying tickets to see a game at either the Garden, Shea or Yankee stadium -- and these are things that I don't make a big deal out of, which is quite ironic. :(

Anyway, it's past 10 a.m., and I think it's time to wake up the wife to give me a ride to Queens so I can pick up my car, since we took the cab home. :)

Aha! Tis Friday once again! Went to the MHS football game this evening (it's their Homecoming). The band was pretty good, but living less than a block from the HS, we get to hear them practice...sort of takes the blush off it, you know? When we left the score was 22-0, home team winning. Yeeha.

Ooh, came home and lit off a 96-shot 'cake' of fireworks. These are strictly illegal (misdemeanor posession and transportation) in Michigan. My wife said it wouldn't be a big deal 'cuz it looked so small (about as big around as a coffee can, about 2" tall). Uh-huh. No law enforcement action, but I called it quits after that one. ;)

Still playing the Cropper. The neck is just too comfortable to put it away. Not missing the Steinberger so much. Maybe I need to get it back out. :) I've been working on a modification of my Latin-ish jazz tune. It's a bit longer now, a little more movement. I plan to record it tomorrow and throw it up on my page.

What are you up to?

Hey Cruster, if you want a great jazz box. I bought an Epiphone Broadway 2 years ago and sings. Plays like an L-5 for 1/5 the price.

Thanks, Tommy. So, you're offering me your two year old Epiphone Broadway for 1/5 the price you paid?

:D

Actually, I recently had this very discussion with our Most Esteemed Schroeder, Keeper of the Jazz Vibe. His recommendation was remarkable in that it included an Epiphone Broadway. Although, he did suggest finding one of the MIJ examples. I think they're from Korea or China now. That being said, I don't think country of origin is as big a deal as it used to be. The local mom and pop has an Ibanez AF105 in natural, flame maple (and it's absolutely gorgeous) for ~$600. The fit and finish is top notch and although I've only played it acoustically, it sounds fantastic.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!
