I hope our friends in Texas will keep a close eye on this one. Katrina went east of where I am, but this one will be to my west. Please, if they ask you to get out or where you live, do it. This will be a bad one.

They're going to try to make it up to Tyler where our parents live. I found this picture of Rita a few minutes ago at the New York Times: Scary to the max. Dave King

We aren't supposed to get a Texas-style whoopin' like our brothers on the coast. But they are predicting 5-8 inches of rain and some tornados. Stocking up on Propane and water today. I hear it is taking 24 hours to get from Houston to Dallas. Normally that is a 5 hour trip. Cars running out of gas on the highway. Bless everyone coming north. Drive safe.

It's a shame some people only learn if they live thru it. I saw the weather channel this morning. They said the traffic jam is so enourmous that people are pushing their cars! There are so many things I could say, but I just wish those in the cone of disaster, that you board up your house and get the f' out of there. I don't want to see any of that new orleans stuff, OK?!

Just because Al Gore screams it, it doesn't make it true. Here's a list of catagory 5 hurricanes going back to 1928. They all caused by global warming? http://www.weathermatrix.net/tropical/cat5storms.htm

I heard a report recently (on NPR) that this activity is cyclical and that we historically go through an increased hurricane period every 25 - 30 years and that the "increased period" lasts 4-7 years. I really hope that is just an opinion and not fact.

Would it be too much to ask that the local government place a few dividers to change all but one of the incoming lanes to outbound?

I would consider that a pretty darn easy decision given the size of this storm and what others in recent history (read JUST A COUPLE WEEKS AGO!!) have accomplished. Those poor people now have about 36 hours to get as far away as they can so I would hope that decision is made now.

How it relates precisely to hurricane intensity and frequency, or for that matter, to global weather patterns in general, is unknown. Statistical correlations can be made, even if, easliy argued. So in the meantime, maybe, if we pray really, really hard the hurricanes will fall over the edge of the world.... I hope folks in the path of this storm are better prepared and the rest of us more prepared to assist, than we were for Katrina.

Our paper just printed a list of the safest and most unsafe cities in the country in terms of weather. Boise was second safest after Honolulu. I think Dallas was in the unsafe category, with several cities in Florida, but I don't remember seeing New Orleans or Houston. I don't know where they come up with these lists.

Frankly, I get tired of hearing people use global warming as an excuse for just about anything involved with any change in the weather.

Just spoke to my Houston counterpart . . . . hope All escape unscathed . . .

It's just a symptom. I hope you are out of harm's way.

I know you're taking a big hit right now anyway.) There will probably be a bunch of jokes after this is over about how Texas just had to have a bigger hurricane than the last one. I can't think of too many states where the citizens have as much pride in their State.

Joined: April 2003 Posts: 2503 Location: Fayetteville, NC | My brother, Sister-in law, 2 Children, 1 with a wife and child are all leaving Houston and making a B-line to Tyler, Texas. According to them alot of business are closing down and boarding up. They plan to stay with My Mom & Dad until it's all over and find out what's happened. They live in Humble which is a Suburb of Houston. I emailed my brother to ask him what time the hurricane party would starts. He told me i was welcome to take a trip and party alone-he would not be there! Lets keep all of those on the texas coast in our prayers.
