Over the past several months there seems to have been a LOT of Ovation solid-body parts on the Bay, and a bunch of us here have been buying them up for projects and upgrades.

I currently have 2 guitars being built for me by Brett(Viper and Bluebird/UKXII), and am making an attempt at building 2 on my own (Preacher and a mutt from a deluxe neck and a Koa topped artist body)..

Frustrating, and Fun at the same time, and more $$$ than I thought it would be.

soooooo.... for those of you out there in parts mode...

what you got? and what you building?

Glenn

Glenn - funny you should ask! I'm probably one of the worst offenders. What started out as a restoration project for my Preacher has turned into:

The main projects are the above mentioned restoration and a tribute guitar. The closest one to being finished is a 12 string preacher deluxe. The rest? Who knows. Can't wait for that warm weather!

looks like the HO cars took a back seat...

I'll swap you a set of Storm pickups and controls for a set of Preacher pups..

the cold weather here (read under 60) has been making it tough to get some decent lacquer time in..

the finish on the viper is almost complete, electronics all soldered up, should be assembling this weekend.

just shot a couple of coats of green trans on the artist body and the deluxe neck/headstock for Shannon (her color choice).

Woody - yah - the plates do seem to be the most difficult parts to come by. At least you don't have to worry about pickguards. I haven't seen one complete, unbroken, viper pickguard.

edit: I meant to add that I looked through your gallery last night again for some inspiration... it worked!

My wife saw what was in the pics and didn't flinch... I was sweating that one.

Glenn - that arrangement is very temporary. I just wanted to see what I had all in one spot so I can match everything up. The HO cars are getting alot of play. That was one of those things from my childhood that I had to track down.

I'm really looking forward to see how the bluebird neck project comes out!

I'll PM you about the PUPs.

Again, I will slink back into my grubby little grotto. Crim, that display is impressive. My project is to find enough space to emulate your level of industry.
Just sold the CC057 project. Have a Matrix neck & bowl staring back at me- kinda like a blank page, and writer's block.
Have a 1537 arriving in the next few weeks. Depending on condition, it may get local restoration, or maybe "beamed up".

seesquare - actually I feel kind of guilty about it. I'll feel much better once I actually complete one of the projects.

I'm more impressed by you guys that tackle the acoustic projects. It seems to me that there is a much smaller margin for error.

All in all, I have alot of respect for anyone who takes it upon themselves to create something from scratch, or to take on a repair/rebuild project. I'm sure that like me, it's a learning process for everyone.

And, some of the BFLG operate at a "higher level of inference & expertise." I consider myself an unsponsored apprentice, at best.

Now I don't feel so bad about the UKII neck and body I bought and haven't done anything with.

I was going to try to make a neckplate from a heavy piece of aluminum. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to have a machine shop make up a batch of them for our projects? Output jackplates for UKII/Preacher would be nice too.

Steve - I thought about that as well... I would be interested in that. Maybe we can have our own serial number series. The other big thing is the battery covers - those seem to be rarer than the neck plates.

:D Phil - that ping pong table is the source of much consternation in this house... it was a family christmas present a few years ago. It's actually a pingpong/pool table combination. We got it at the Sports Authority for $299. My daughter would kill me (pingpong player) and my son would thank me (pool player) if I got rid of the ping pong table.

As you can see, I also use it as a temporary work space/play table.

So to answer your question - priceless!

Maybe we should just place orders with MWoody. I wonder how much one with koa veneer would cost?

I think a machine shop could make simple neckplates pretty easily and cheaply. Serial numbers would be more expensive. The weird shape of the battery covers should make them even more expensive. Eventually you reach the point where it's cheaper to buy a whole guitar than to build a mutt.

Does anyone have experience with cutting odd shapes from pickguard material?

With the neck plate, strength would be of the utmost importance - everything else seems to be just for protection and can be made of just about anything... i.e. custom Woody!

Woody - do we get the "friends and family" share price for the IPO?

"Friends don't let Friends pay wholesale"!

I'm open to making whatever you need. The hard part is matching the wood tone to the instrument and the Owner.

I have some lighter Preacher PG's that would work on your sanded Preacher!

I generally let a PG go around $30. This way I make $1... sometimes.

That is Tigger, a Ragdoll breed. Best breed there is in my book. Very passive and lovable.

Not the sharpest hoe in the shed though...
