My 6 month long search of my next guitar is finally over....whewwww. I started out my search for a backup for my 6778LX and was leaning towards the 1778T. Then (this is the weird part) my wife said that if I was going to get another guitar to get a better one than what I have.....still don't know where that came from but I wasn't going to argue with her.

So I narrowed it down to a Custom Elite and the 2080. The Elite might be a little nicer to look at but I felt that if I would have purchased the Elite I'd wish that I would have purchased the Adamas.

Hopefully I won't regret my purchase but how can you go wrong with an Adams. So if anyone out there can give me some feedback on their experiences with the 2080 I like to hear about it.

Did you have to do any adjustment to the action, or get it "set up"?

I had to wait almost 4 months to get mine after I ordered it. Sadly, I am not a patient in times like that, but man, was it worth the wait. I really didn't like it at first to be honest because it was more difficult to fret than my other Ovations. Someone suggested that I just keep on playing it for a while and let the neck settle in. Never heard that before, but I did, and it did. Now, the 2080 is one of my favorite players. Easy to fret, big, wide open sound, killer looks. You will love it.

I special ordered two 2080D's (baritones) in a 6 and 12 string and have been anxiously awaiting their arrival.

Reports from almost everyone who has played one have loved the tone of the 2080's while the "looks" appear to be a love/hate sort of thing.

The 2080 I thought was one beautiful guitar. Cliff had a Q? at the tour a couple years and I thought that was awesome also. It must be because I am strange that I like strange.

I'll be sure to give my first impressions on playability once I receive it. I'll probably take a trip to my local guitar guy and get it set up, if needed. I don't think I've ever wanted the weekend to be overwith this bad.

I have a question about the XLR since I've never had a guitar with it. Can you use the normal 1/4" to plug in with, is the sound that much more impressive with the XLR? I have a Roland AC-60 amp if that helps.

You can use either and I'm sure you'll want to try both. To me, the XLR sounds much cleaner. You'll probably need a dummy plug in the 1/4 hole though.

You're gonna love it. I just got mine on Thursday (see photos on another thread) and I'm really impressed. Good choice.

So can I use the onboard tuner without being plugged in at all? I've heard about using a 1/4" dummyplug when using the XLR. If I'm just using the 1/4 can I use the tuner? I don't know why they couldn't make this a bit easier:-)

At least on mine, you HAVE to be plugged into "something" for the tuner to work. No pluggie, no tuney. You could be plugged into 1/4, XLR, both, or just a dummy plug. But it seems to be that it take a plug (any plug) to activate power to the tuner.

This is bizarre to say the least. If you have the ability to plug in, chances are that you have other sources of reference pitch, a keyboard, an other guitar player, a rack mount tuner, etc. It's the time when you are stranded on a deserted island and you just installed a new set of elixers that you need the damn onboard tuner!

I think it was posted here that the rationale behind the no-pluggie, no-tuney thing is that the VIP takes a lot of juice and somehow they wanted to better regulate it. I don't know, if it was me, maybe I would have designed the preamp to take TWO batteries, one dedicated to the tuner ???

By the way, I DO like the tuner on the VIP better than the OPPro(s). I liek it that the arrows dim away as you near pitch, rather than long blink. Just personal preference.

Me too, much easier to get an accurate tuning quickly.

Mine came from Al with a perfect set up. I only need to adjust it slightly when I switched from light to medium strings.

Mine came perfect. Any decent dealer will check over the guitar before he sends it to you and intercept anything that isn't right. The great thing is that it's possible to buy "mail order" and still get "Mom and Pop" store treatment. Dave

Does the 2080 come with Adamas 1818's on it? I've been using EXP's on my 6778LX and I've found that they loose their tone rather quickly.

I play about 1-2 hours a day and after about 3 weeks they've lost quite a bit of their brightness. Not to impressed, espically when they cost so much. I just ordered 3 sets of 1818's for 2 dollars less than one set of EXP's.

Can't say for sure, I wasn't aware that the Adamas strings were the same as EXP's. If they are the same, why are the EXP's so much more expensive? I'm not what one might consider to be a string guru by any means. Bottom line is, if I can buy 3 packs for less than a pack of EXP's then I'm happy.

Ovations come with EXP16's. PB, coated (not as heavily as Elixirs IMHO). The Adamas 1818's ARE NOT coated. (same as A'add EJ16's). I get about 10 hrs of play out of them before they start to lose it. I usually only get about 20hrs out of coated strings(if I can stand them at all).

I took it out on a gig the day it arrived. I created plenty of "stink" with it myself (or is that just how one would describe my playing)

Anyway, I'm bringing it to the tour ... ahem..I mean ... open house. You're more than welcome to re-apply some "Al Stink". ;)

Well I received my Adamas Wednesday!! Totally different tone than my 6778LX, man the bass really booms on this thing! It'll take a while to get it broken in, still has that new "stiff" feeling to it.

I'm taking it in this weekend to get setup and action lowered, frets polished...ect.

I'd like to thank Robbie AKA "worshipleader" for all the information!
