Does Hey Jude really need to go through the "nana na naaas" 17 times??
Although I love The Who's "Pure & Easy" after the 6th "there once was a note....listen", I'm ready to say enough already.... end it.
Do they do this just to make the song fit into radio airplay standards?
We counted them one day and I think that Eddie Rabbit "Loves a Rainy Night" something like 47 times.
Or... maybe I have the attention span of a 6 year old.

Brad you're just paying attention. Actually I think there is a hypnotic hook with the repeating verses that stick in your mind. Part of the formula for some hit records. In the old days they had to do it without copy and paste.

Wa-ay back when I first worked in radio we used to call those bathroom records. Many old broadcasters still get a Pavlovian urge to vacate every time one of 'those' songs comes on.

The long intro to Pink Floyd's, Shine on you crazy diamond makes me loose interest in the song before it gets good.

I think a song should be 7-8 minutes maximum. Anything more is just playing around for no reason.

The continent of Atlantis was an island, located in what we now call the Atlantic Ocean... yada yada.

Thanx Brad... I hadn't thought of that song for years. Now it will be stuck in my head while I searching for a REAL song in there. Thanx alot!

Anything I try to sing is WAY too long from the "get go!!" It's really embarrassing for someone that made his living as a songwriter for 15 years. :(

Puff The Magic Dragon. I mean, there's a kid, a dragon, some wax and the dude dies. So let's get it over in one verse and move on. Dave

This topic reminds me of the stupidity of some songs. example given: "You're in the dessert. You got nothin' else to do: NAME THE FREAKIN HORSE"

Brian & I do "Share The Land" (Guess Who). We don't even try to copy the extended jam type ending. Without being a full band it's hard to keep the mojo up for that long. If we start getting bored anybody listening will surly be tired of it, too.

On the flip side, if you want to do a long ending to a song, the absolute perfect example of the way to do it right is... drum roll please .......Layla.

Little Jackie Paper doesn't die.
He grows up. Leaving Puff all alone and sad in his dark cold and lonely cave pineing away for the days when..when.. (sob) I can't talk about this right now. :(

Pull yourself together man! Take a deep breath. It's alright.

Puff moved on and got a gig on 'The Lord Of The Rings'. He kinda digs the dark side.

The original version of "Light My Fire" by the Doors was something like 12 minutes as I recall. Everybody went to the can when that one was played.
