Suddenly I can't get my low E string in tune. Not even close. Time for a new set of strings?

you can't get it in tune or you can't get it to stay in tune?
i've never had a string i could not get in tune. what method are you using to tune it? if you are using an electronic tuner, perhaps you hit the calibrate button by mistake. turn your tuner off to reset it and try again.
is it in tune played open but out of tune when you fret it?

Could be...(is the wind on the post slipping?)...

....or a Tuning Machine...

or somethings moving that shouldn't oughta (neck, bridge, top etc...)

i agree with jeff, and didn't think about a slipping tuning machine.

Can't get it in tune.

I used the built in tuner first then the "5th fret" method then my electronic tuner. With the electronic tuner the needle was bouncing all over the place.

I notice it most when played open.

It just sounds sour.

It's a 1778T Elite.

I did notice (with my limited experience) a little slipping in the tuning machine.

is it flat?

There are a couple of us recently with bum tuning machines...

Make sure the post nut is secure as well as the headstock screws and give the tuning button screw a tighten...

Yes it is flat.

Is this a DIY fix or should I take it to someone?

First guess would be the string is slipping at the tuning peg. Second would be the tuner is slipping, although I've never had an ovation do that. If it is more than one string, then it could be much worse, like the neck or bridge pulling, but the most likely would be the string or tuner. A new string will stretch for awhile.

Duct Tape and WD40.
If you need it to stay put and it won't, use the Duct Tape.
If it needs to move but it won't, use the WD40.
Next problem?

Hey, do you mean that when the E-string is tuned to the rest the OP Pro is giving you diddy-wompus indications?
Contact Customer Service or your Dealer and get the Preamp module replaced.

I'll start out making sure that my nuts are secure and then screw my headstock and see what happens from there.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like a 'tighty whitey' fix to me, but getting your ashes hauled is always a good first choice.

He was adjusting the loose nuts behind the keyboards...

I think we'll get along just fine.

Have you ever played a Martin?
