I have an fd-14 and it has black tuning buttons. Are these original, or did the music store change them? All the pic's I have seen have perloid buttons, were these added by the owners? I assumed the black were orig. because I bought the guitar new, but you never know.

Thank you!! I'm near Placerville, CA. I will post some pic's when I buy a new digital camera. You are absolutely right, I have loved this guitar more than any I have ever played. The narrow neck is perfect for my smaller girl hands. Also, was it Steve who mentioned the lighter weight? That and (of course), the rounded O back make this the most wearable guitar ever. I'm going to run and check my e-mail. Thanks again.

By the way, did this guitar sit on the shelf of that tiny small-town music store from 1995 until I bought it two years ago? What I mean is, was this series all made in 1995? Even the O website has no listing I could find, so I really know very little about it, except that I love it and will be #45/50 for the rest of my days.

Yep -- only 50 were made i believe. Quite a few of them are in the hands of OFC members. Welcome to the board.

Now if you want to sell or trade for it, let me know :)

Well, I'm glad I'm welcome, because I'll be around for a very long time. I wish I knew where the rest of the series is. Only about a dozen are accounted for so far?

I think 52 were made. All in 2003.

On the back it says 45/50. I saw a 00 and a 51 in the gallery. If somebody owns one of those, will you please let me know what it says on yours?

You were right, Moody, p.i., I had to go back to Jeff White's pic page and what I thought was white perloid buttons was just light glistening off the gold. Thank you. You will all think I am a moron, but I didn't know until today how limited the edition really was. I only knew how much I love it.
Thank you, Dave. I forgot how I had gotten to the registration page. I think I'll go e-mail 00 and 51 and ask them.
I'm so happy to be here. You guys are great.

I e-mailed the owners of numbers 00, 51 and xx'no number'. I hope they get back to me, then I'll post the responses just in case anyone is curious.

I can't speak for the factory, but I "think" when they issue a press release or public advertisement that they will build a certain quantity of a limited edition guitar, it really means "we're gonna guild more or less xx of them or until we move on to something else or don't get any more orders."

Again, I can't speak for the factory but it seems for any new limited edition there are usually a few prototypes that preceed the actual sequential serial numbers. In the case of the FD14 I think there was only one proto and that ended up in Bill's hands. I don't think it actually says "00" on it. I put that into the serial number list just to indicate that it was the first known FD14.

Originally the press release from Ovation said they would build 100 of the FD14's. But that was cut to (more or less) 50. I suspect that didn't get enough orders to build all 100 initially. Roughly half of the bunch was to go to Asia, and the other half sold in the US. A few maybe to Europe, but I'm not sure of that.

The highest sequential number I've seen is 51. But no gaurantee this is actually the last one built. In fact, there is some evidence that the numbers were not built exactly in order. For example Moody's in middle of the pack serial number, but some people suspect it was possibly a very early one, or very late one, based on the TL pickup. Maybe it was a proto that they decicded to stamp a number on and sell. Who knows.

There is also at least one with no sequential number. Could be others. Not sure why this is. Maybe it was a replacement neck at some point. Or maybe built from left over parts. Cool guitar none the less. It does have a serial number however. But a recent development similar to this is my own FD14 (#34). I just had the neck gloss finished and somehow in the process ALL markings on the back of the headstock are completely GONE. No serial number, no sequence number. It's completely neutered!

Anyway, there's probably more odd stories and theories surrounding these great guitars. The most important thing is that they are wonderful guitars and those who own them should feel very lucky.

Dave

The really collectable ones are number 51 and 52 out of a run of 50.

Mine was one of the first three built and was originally an acoustic only. Hence the thin line pickup in it.

As a side note, it came with the original small black faux ebony (read "plastic") tuner buttons on it. I've since switched to large real ebony (read "wood") buttons.

I'm stil searching for the right strings for it....

Mine is #50 according to the paperwork but has no markings on the neck like my first one did.

Dave is right. I have used the same pic for years because it feels good and sounds good.

I received a bunch of pics for free (enclosed inside the plastic wrap of a magazine) and was ASTOUNDED by the different sound my guitars produced with the new pics. Some made it louder, some softer, some harsher and some more mellow.

I really was amazed.

I'll try different pics. I think I'm also going to try nickel wrapped strings for a slightly mellower sound.

I tend to keep about 3 or 4 different kinds of picks on my mic stand when I gig, and change 'em according to the song I'm playing and how I play it.

I'd base the string choice on something that gives you a fingerpicking tone that you like, and then adjust the pick(s) accordingly . . .

Folks laughed and whinced last time I posted this but, they do make a difference.... I take care of them and treat them as I would any other piece of high end equipment... instead of looking at it as just another disposable pick...

Welcome JuJu. There's not too many of us here from Northern California. I'm down in the Bay Area now, but was married in Placerville and three of my kids were born at Marshall hospital. Lived in Pollock Pines for a few years when it was still Sierra Ski Ranch and it was still cheap to do half days. Is Poor Red's still open in Diamond Springs?

You've got one of the best-of-the-best according to everyone here. I've played Moody's FD and it is a very special guitar.

Hey, fellas, you'll be happy to know that I don't let my buddies use picks on the fd-14, I keep it loose when not in use and I am very happy to do some research on this series.
Like me, # 51 is human. He is really #8.

There's more, but I'll post it all once I get the details from the factory and track down some of these guitars that could be sitting in hawk shops just waiting for you to buy them for next to nothin' since they are not in any appraisal book in posession of the locals.

Continuing this thread regarding FD-14's, I've been trying to figure out what kind of strings to use on mine. Phos/bronze just sounds too harsh so I went with my first ever silk and steel strings.

Much better while still being reasonably bright. Anybody else tried different strings?
