This weekend I just had a flashback of a custom Ovation 9-string I played over 20 tears ago. Some guy in California that was our opening act had one as part of his solo gig. His performance was not memorable, but the guitar sure was. What a great rhythm and finger picking set-up!! Now I'm thinking hard about getting one made.

The "bass" strings (4th, 5th and 6th) are as usual. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd strings are done like a 12-string, in pairs, with the G-strings done in octaves.

These guitars have the sound of the chorus-like trebles, but without the muddiness of the paired bass strings. I know other companies have made these, but you don't see many of them.

Beware Al.....I'm thinking hard!! UTE???

That's not enough symmetry for me, Cliff. That's a different take on the old Nashville high string tuning, though.

I meant the Martin McGuinn in kind of a take on the old tuning.

OK mi comprendo, but couldn't I save some money, and just take the three lower octaves off any old twelve?

Just trying to be the voice of reason, which is never a cure for GAS.
[No, no! I want a NEW guitar! Get it?]

Good point Arthur. I could do it with a used 12-string on E-bay. I've thought about that. All it needs to have is individual tuners on a slothead (personal preference) so that I could remove the extras and patch up the holes.

Using X-tra Heavy Gauge for Bass,to make up for loss of Tension...Interesting Idea, might try that myself, than maybe the 12 string ( 9 ) would be usable for Travis picking.. :)

Vic, this tuning does work well for most Travis picking. Try it!

If you are gonna MAKE a dedicated 9-string, you would also wanna get a blank nut, and cut it for nine. That way the three singles would be "centered" down the frets. Then you will have to decide which holes in the bridge you wanna use.
It wound be easier to do is on a regular "peg-head" as opposed to a slot-head. Easier to plug the holes. Maybe try it on a cheap celebrity first.
[Not to talk bad about Celebrity's... being as I got one coming in the mail, and one in the room. Two, if you call a Korean Balladeer a Celebrity?]

I remember that we made an Anniversary model like this, with the red finish. Octive G, B and E unison.

So Goober... Someone made a guitar like I suggested. Now, the question is;
Do you wanna make your own, or buy one?
Don't know how many people even know what this is,
so you might be able to get it at a discount.
Until we had this conversation, I'm not sure I would have realized the usefulness of this guitar.

Decisions, Decisions... I just got my CC44, so I'm satisfied for awhile.
How about you?

Add on-- There is always Krylon.

Arthur, the more I look at it, the more I like it. I'm going to see if I can get it on the cheap, then if I do, send it back to the Mother Ship for restoration. I really like those Anniversary models.

I'll see just how high it goes.

Thanks for the post, Randy!

i immediately thought of you, goober, when i saw it and thought like you did, "wow, what a coincidence".

you could always get mamaship to paint it a different color. how 'bout a burst (sun or tobacco) added to the black?

So, Was that really made like that... Y'know, by the factory. Or is that homemade?

But that is down right purdy. Heck, I'd give him a hunnert bucks for it.

add on-- in the time it took me to think about what smartass remark to type, it got more expensive. This may get spendy...
