Do you collect guitars?
I thought it would be ok if I get a guitar that I want.
However, folks, you have several guitars.
Is it for different genre, use or design?

Actually I thought myself now what if I have more than two guitars. It may be a design with color to me.
I actually ordered viper ea63 however even now I want to change the color from that I ordered. I think it's too late to compose colors again to almost producted guitar.

And eventually, I get to think I may order another nylon stringed ovation with different color that I want in the future.
Is it wasteful and useless idea?

Of course I believe they will make a good guitar in spite of annoying color and design picking.

..All That JAZZ....
Jazzy ,let me explain , No-One here collects guitars,we have several instruments , mainly because we have a Dire Need to Express ourselves , and to Convey Our Important Message to the World , which Consists of,let`s say ,Mood,Sound ,Esthetics,Political Disbeliefs, that Requires the Appropriate Tools,Look,U would n`t be able to fix a car just with a screwdriver ( U could get real screwed that way ),so ya need a tool-kit , same here , One guitar( the idea alone " shudder" ) will not Cut it,so ya need a String-Cutter , when ya feel "Blue" ya Need a Blue Guitar,Red for R & R , for Classical, a Cedar Top, etc. ,etc , So U see, having Several Guitars is an Absolute Necessity,a " Must " , Dictated by the World`s Craving for Passionate Entertainment...

Collecting seems to me based on a couple factors:

Desire
Time
Money
Space

Desire-How much do you want it. What need does it fulfill.
Time-Do you have time to play, and /or care for all those instruments
Money - After a while it gets expensive
Space - Guitars take up space

For me, I currently have parred my collection to 4 guitars.
1 Telecaster copy for electric use
2 Country artist nylon for acoustic tex mex, latin and country work.
3 MEWP-II For my steel string flat top needs
4 OSP-1 for travel and a change of pace for that electric mando sound.

That's it. I'd love to have more, but I don't have the time to play more, I don't have the space to store more and I have to be careful with my money.

So with 4 guitars my needs are fulfilled. Some people are different. They have more time to play, more space to store instruments, need a more diverse group of intstruments, collect for an investment, collect them because they are tools, collect them because they are beautiful ...

You have to decide what you want and what you need.

Java, here is where the "guitars are like ice cream" analogy comes in. There are of many different flavors. All of my guitars are different flavors - they play differently, sound different and some lend themselves to different styles of music or playing. When I got my nylon string Country Artist, it felt and sounded so different I changed my style of playing and the things I played on that guitar. I started learning things I probably wouldn't have learded otherwise. I feel that way about each of my guitars. Each one has it own sound and personality. When GAS strikes I'm always looking for something different to compliment everything else I own.

For about thirty years I just had my two guitars. The ol' Balladeer & Breadwinner. Since joining the OFC I have added four. I never thought I would own 3 stringed instuments let alone 6.
But even at 6 I don't concider myself a collector. I would instead say that I have a "well rounded assortment" of Ovations. If I was a true collector I'd have a never ending hankering for another guitar. As it is now my Balladeer & Breadwinner don't get the playing time they deserve. My G.A.S. affliction has virtually disappeared because I feel I now have (1) Every instrument I need to satisfy whatever meger talent I have been blessed with and (2), because I feel the guitars I currently own represent all that I want in a guitar collection.

Being...
The Balladeer... My first acoustic. This is the one that has the most of my DNA rubbed into it. Lots of history and memories wrapped up in that guitar. I can look at a picture of that young, skinny, full head-o-hair kid with the guitar then look across the room and see that same instrument sitting there. Precious few other material possessions have traveled along with me this far.

The Breadwinner... This satisfies the collectors need to own a true "vintage" guitar. A very early example (ser# 906) that is in perfect working order. The ever so slight amount of fret wear only shows that my favorite chord over the years has been "D".

The Al DiMeola II... This one broke the status quo. I went in the store to buy just a standard Elite and walked out with this bling filled beauty and a Fender Acoustisonic amp. As Ovation's top of the line, wood topped model there is not many others left to desire.

The U681T... The extreme other side of the DiMeola coin. Slothead.... 12 fret... stark black elegance... that legendary textured top. There are other high end Adamas models, both old and new, that may cost more money, but this one is definatly part of that family.

The Trekker... The one I don't have to worry about. A campfire sing along, leave in the car (within reason), take to the Grand Canyon guitar. No.. it's not a tone monster. But it is humbly sincere in it's own way.

The UKE... because life is just to short to not be good.

Maybe for a while I was a true "collector". But I feel like I might really be over it.... for now.

jj,

In the past year I have renewed my love with playing the guitar (after a 25 year absense). I have had a long time to think about what I would like to play and the style(s) I want to play in. I have been lucky enough to acquire the guitars to fit these styles.

I hopefully have completed my little collection (as of late last night), it is as follows:

1) 1976 Epiphone acoustic (my first guitar)
2) Ovation 1867 Legend (for the shallow bowl and inexpensive cost - bought used)
3) Ovation 1778LX (had to have a least one new one and love the tone)
4) Ovation Custom Legend 1158 (needed a 12 string and got alot of bling too, not to mention a 12 fret to the body, slothead, boomer)
5) Ovation Viper (had to have an electric to fill out the stable)

Not really a collection, but now I have a guitar to fit my many modes! I don't believe that I need any more guitars, but would not rule out the possibility of upgrading (1 in / 1 out) someday.

Good Luck in your future collecting, get what makes you happy. If it doesn't, then sell it, and try again!

Some of all of the above. It's a mental illness. I don't really consider it a collection, although most would probably disagree. A collection to me implies some element of uselessness. I try to have what I "need", which opens up another debate, "How many guitars do you need?"
I had one guitar for years and rarely used it. When I bought a 12 string, my wife questioned why anyone needed two guitars. To me, a 12 string is a different instrument or tool. Would anyone question the need for a chain saw when you have a table saw? Totally different tools, although someone might say, "You already have a saw. Why would you need another?" I don't know of anyone who says I'm a saw collector because I have several different saws.
I'm liking this analogy as I'm thinking about it. I need a nylon string guitar to play songs that don't require it, but are better played on a nylon string guitar. Classical music and Spanish music (although I do very little of either). An electric guitar is a totally different tool from an acoustic.
That gets you to about 4 different guitars. Then there are the smaller variations, like the different neck widths and cutaways. Different variations of tools that are better for different songs.
I've worked my way up to about 6. Beyond that we get into my "justifications" that are a little less rational. I don't need them, I deserve them.

I only have as many guitars as I can afford...

Seriously,

I don't ever want to have more guitars that I can't play them all frequently, but I want a variety to pick from.

I'm sure she wouldn't want me to be a rookie, but I'm afraid to tell her that. I know, I'll just tell her if I get caught and the smoke & mirrors don't trick her.

I buy guitars because they either sound good, look good, have some historical significance or just strike some special chord with me. The truth is that I only need one guitar to survive. Any high quality guitar would do the job, as long as it was not a Taylor.

I started collecting ovations because I wanted one of every type - balladeer, legend, elite, custom legend, folklore, etc. Deep, shallow, cutaway, non ... I gathered up a lot of guitars that were very beautiful to look at. The problem was that 95% of them sounded like crap compared to wooden guitars. So I started selling them off and buying wooden guitars such as Martin, Takamine and Collings. I kept a few of the most special (to me) ovations. I'm very happy to have fewer, but nicer, guitars.

Sure. But that's just my opinon, based on my ears, and what my brain interprets is a "good" sounding guitar. Others will disagree 180 degrees. That's fine.

Take the U681 12 string for example. I think THAT is one of the most incredible instruments ever produced. I'd put it ahead of every single 12-string I've ever owned or played. No contest. BUT ... as far as I know only a few people have bought them which completely shocks me.

There are no "definate" answers when you're talking about peoples opinions.

Ah,So True, and Yet..somehow there are those (instruments) that simply have that "sound" ,Now,considering that you have the opportunity to compare rather many different instruments, and having seen pictures of you as a young lad playing guitar( your gallery )which shows ( in my opinion) that you have an "ear for music" So I , for one, would respect your opinion regarding the sound of a certain guitar,..I reserve the "Right" to disagree though.. :)

Oh there's a definate answer, everybody has one!

You do start that way, with just one and then it's to get a set and then ....
I had a Travis Bean, then one of every model in each color, and one of the two double necks and passed on the other one. Made it up to 61. They are all gone now.
I started with a style 2 tricone, and then had to have one of each style made, with a few duplicates. Add to that some single cones and then there are a pile of Nationals. I've moved some of them but have most still around.
And then there were the Fenders, one of every model in red, now gone and Gibsons and on and on.
I only have 4 Martins, those, maple necks and Bursts can run into the big bucks. It's a good place to put money but they take up a lot of room. Going between two houses with all of them is a real pita. I'm more into playing than having these days. Times change.

I don't know how you define "collection". It's one of those, "I'll know it when I see it" kinda things.

Compared to some here, my "collection" is small. I own 14 guitars and a uke, so call it 14 1/3 guitars. Before the OFC, I had 5 guitars, so I've definitely added a few more. But with me (and I've said this before), almost every guitar I own came to me in a special way. I really didn't set out to buy "one of everything". I wish I could, but apparently only Bill and Dave can afford to do that. All the more power to 'em.

I pick up each of my guitars and think, gee, if I had to live with just this one, I'd be fine with that (with the exception of my old Legend... that guitar really does sound like crap but it's kept for sentimental reasons).

It's a good feeling. Life's too short to own a lot of crappy guitars. There's only room for one in each collection........
