...I have never done anything like this and I apologize for up front if this is in bad taste , against the rules, etc, etc.

Their is a guy living in Wisconsin(his name is Gary Bowen) who is selling off all of his guitars, mainly solid body Ovations to try and continue to make ends meet.He has had very serious medical problems that have left him with many tens of thousands of dollars of debt even after being forgiven an over $100,000 bill from his hospital. He is also now permanently disabled.

I have purchased a Deacon from him for $800 to help him out. This is not enough as he needs to keep selling all of his guitars.

I was wondering if I could ask every one so inclined to send this guy $1 or $2 if you were so inclined. This should hurt each of us too much and could really add up if many contributed. I do not know this person, but do know that he is in need and in desparate straits and he is a fellow Ovation lover.

If you would like to send the money directly to him I can get his address but he may be losing his home soon. If you like you could send it to me via paypal and I would send him a lump sum and I would absorb the paypal fees. I know this is a bit strange, but I feel compelled to help a fellow Ovation guitar lover out in his time of need. Let me know what you think or if you have any better ideas.

I apologize if this offends any one.

Regards,

Tom

I just sold our BMW and would like to have one of those Vipers, but I don't want to push my luck. I "agreed" to hold off for awhile. I'll see if I can figure out how to use Paypal.

Good job, Doc!

We laugh everyday about trading guitars and building collections, etc. We need to be thankful for what we have, it could be anyone of us.

Doc, This is a great thing you are doing. I agree with Randy on this one, if anyone thinks this is in bad taste, they don't belong here. Paypal on the way along with our prayers.

Thank you to all so far.

I would ask others to please see if you can find a place in your heart for Gary. None of us know him. This is the truest kind charity , when there is no way you can ever be repaid by the recipient. You will be repaid however by your kindness. Kindness is a wonderful thing; the more you give the more you have.

So on behalf of Gary, who at this moment doesn't even know we are doing this, please help him out. I'm only asking for a dollar or two.

You guys are great, I'm sure Gary will be greatful. If you don't have paypal ,please private message me or send me an email and I'll send you my address.

Regards,

Tom

Tom, you might also have him check out Modest Needs . Sounds like his needs might exceed what they are able to provide, but it's worth a try. Their mission is to pool small contributions and help people make ends meet in a very open fashion..

Paypal sent; wish I could send more. Gary may not know you well, but he knows at least one good man in this world.

Good job and good luck.

This was "most excellent" to stumble upon today!

I'm so happy this is what became of my initial post on behalf of Gary.. he seems so nice every time he calls me to say what he's selling and he bought quite a few of these guitars off Samova from here on the boards.

Tom should've gotten what looked like a very nice Deacon by now... How is it Doc?

I will be paypal'ing you something too.. to help out Gary.. VERY nice idea! Good karma and YES.. everyone in this world.. ESPECIALLY the really RICH ones could learn something here! Indeed!

It's such a shame that greed gets the best of so many people... a real shame....

Give a report on that Deacon! Oh! And everyone should CALL Gary... just to chat.. he LOVES talking about the Ovations! Make sure you have "time to chat" though.. he's a chatty cathy! hahahahaa!

All the best and God bless!

Michael Joseph Kramer,

Thank you. Every one here should know that it was your original post that put me in touch with Gary. If any one does call him , please don't tell him yet what we are all doing for him. I want to wait till the weekend to see how much we can collectively give him.

If you haven't donated yet and have a dollar or two to spare , please consider send a little something for Gary. He's going to be so surprised that you are all doing this for him . Regards,

Tom
P,S. no deacon yet but it takes Gary quite a while to get around.I'll let every one know once it arrives.

Dear Tom
If it's as nice as he said and as it looks I'm sure, as you love your UKII, you'll probably dig this axe even moreso. The Deacons and Breadwinners are SOOOOO comfortable to play in ANY position.. especially sitting down. And if you enjoy exercising your fingers with a vertical neck like I do... you can even lock the lower bout around your knee/thigh area and BURN those scales or chords all the way up and down those amazing feeling wide necks!

I remember. It was about 10 years ago now...
My dad called me about a local pawn shop having some guitars. He said. Go check them out and if you like them the owner will give them to you and I'll stop by later to pay him for them. I was pumped. The best "and weirdest" guitar of the bunch was a Deacon 12 string. I had been collecting Les Pauls, Strats, you know, the standards in the beginning. The Deacon 12 wasn't mint. Maybe a 7 to 8 out of 10. It was fretting out on the 3 high strings from the 12th fret up but WOW did this guitar sound amazing and play REALLY amazing. I had a 66 330 or 360 Rickenbacker up until this point in time.. the bound body Beatles model.. and this Deacon 12 blew it away! I had wished I never sold it two years later but the deal was too sweet. A guitar I paid MAYBE $50 for out of the 4 that my dad bought for me was getting me offers of $500 or better. I finally let it go to a virtual stranger for $700 and regretted it ever since.

Then I became an eBay MASTER and started buying Deacons and Breadwinners and I haven't stopped since.

Next to my Brian May Red Special fetish.. they are right there with me. ALL THE WAY. Took me two years from that point to get Deacons and Breadwinners back into my collection and I have yet to stop! It's put me into a virtual poorhouse where I always have to steal from Peter to pay Paul and I'll ALWAYS owe the banks money.. that's just a sad fact of life.. but I'll have my guitars around... that's that. hahahaaa!

Anyways.. yes... PEOPLE...

Send Dr Tom anything you can via Paypal or direct mail for our Ovation brother down on his luck.

It will come back to you tenfold or better!!

God guarantees that! What's the harm in having some faith... we all need it eventually.

All the best my friends and God bless!

You are a good man too, MJK! Already told Doc he was.

I will have to be satisfied with my one and only Viper, when it gets here next Monday. The neighbors have been spared loud, bad tunes so far. But, when it comes, all bets are off. I always wondered how loud my Amp is, we are about to find out!

The way to do it, doc, is just bump your original post up with some new post. No matter how inane the content.

Personally, I think the best charity is anonamous (sp?)....anything else feels like ego and pride. But that's just my grumpy side.

(nevermind CWK on the other thread, I'm sure his bark is worse than his bite. Not so sure about the dog. .... But he was right.)

Hey, Enough.
Saccaguea you're OK and so is Dr Tom. As cliff said from time to time people here have done kind things for others, happens quite often.
It's just the blantant second post that pissed me off and the only reason to post it here is because the other is closed.
If people want to help this guy, fine. That's a good thing. That is also covered in this post.
I hope that Dr Tom and who ever else can help this guy. It works best if people contact him from this point on, not the other way around. Then you get into the pan-handling etc. Let's not go there.
peace.

Has he applied for SSI? At least he'll get some regular income due to his disability.
Has he applied for Medicaid? At least he'll get medical care.
Has he applied for Food Stamps? At least he'll eat.
Has he made contact with his church? People in his community will have a better idea as to what to do for him than we could.

He's an unknown person to me, but I wish him luck.

cwk2,
Peace to you also. Enough has been said. As a member with 6753 postings on this site, as well as the signer of my beautiful adamas 1, I respectfully accept your position on this. How about we change the subject back to guitars.
By the way, on the label of my guitar where you signed it. The label is on a thin strip of paper that says "Adamas by Ovation" on it with nothing else.
All the other ones I've seen are on an oval label with the address on it. Why is that? did they run out of labels that day?

I want to thank the 9 people who were kind enough to make a contribution. We have raised $285 for Gary and i will send it to him and acknowlege those who choose to be acknowleged. If you don't want your name mentioned, just let me know.

Thank you for your kindness. Thank you for taking the time to email me. Some were uncomfortable with paypal and I have sent them my address to mail me something.

Some people will attack the best of intentions; I am used to this behavior as I see it quite often. . So thank you also for sending me messages about that and being concerned that I might be offended. I'm not offended, as I choose to only acknowlege your kindness. Most of you are fine human beings and I appreciated your willingness to help some one none of us know. The only bond between us and Gary is our love for Ovation Guitars and for that reason alone we helped Gary out.

I am very happy that we did this and i hope you feel likewise.

I'll contact Gary most likely on Saturday and i 'll let you all know by private message how he responded; then as Michael suggested feel free to give him a call and brighten his day .

Regards,

Tom

Its always pleasurable to see a "family" sharing in postive situations. This, from the 1st time on the boards, seemed as a sort of family to me. Even moreso now seeing the "dysfunctional" members rearing their ugly heads! Hahahaha! Just a joke.. please don't be offended.

I personally am stuck here. To make the best of my existence on this planet. Amongst other people with FREEWILL that can easily choose to HURT as well as HELP. I always choose to help, even if it hurts. Because the GOOD we do is all that counts! The bad? Well.. I guess that counts too.. but to the wrong side. But who am I to judge.

God bless us all.. the kind ones, the doubtful ones.. and the downright mean ones too.. ESPECIALLY them.. because they need it the most.

All the best... thanks to the FINE-9 !!!!
You have cemented your golden palaces in Heaven!
