Tune the geeter to open G and pretend I am Sleepy Liver Rivers...oh wait I am.
anyhoo. Since I since I aquired the Celebrity, I now have two acoustics. go figure I never was one for acoustics untill recently. so I pretty much leave the Samick tuned for slide. mainly because it has the higher action as well.
So if anyone has any slide tips for a slide noob, I would appreciate it. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Yes, slide on over to Big Road Blues. The big decision will be to put it on your pinky or ring finger. Decide early and stick with it. I vote for pinky. |

Location: NJ | Try as I may t'stick with it on my pinky, I keep having better success on the ring finger . . .
My hand just feels more "natural" and "comfortable" muting behind the slide when it's on my ring finger.
I think I just need more tequila . . . |

We did a lot of slide at the Dowling clinic. I was torn at first ring vs. pinky. Definately I felt more comfortable with it on my ring, but we did a lot of mix slide and non slide on the same few bars. Rethinking how to finger a simple D chord shape for example, withOUT using your ring finger was a bit of a task. Since the clinic I have been practicing (8 hours a day, right students?) with slide on my pinky. Chording is much easier with my three "main" fingers and I'm getting more control of the slide by kind of "pinching" it with my ring finger. You gotta hear some slide on my baritone uke!

(ACTUALLY, I just gotta' PRACTICE more!!).
I might just try a smaller/lighter slide as well.
I've got one of those hand-blown Nunwell's from Matt, and I LOVE the "tone" of it, but the only one that "fit" me (at the time) was rather large & hefty. Wish he was gonna back this year so I could get another.
btw:
My partner Rick LOVED that slide so much that last year I picked one up for him from Matt.
A couple weeks ago, he "dropped" it at a gig (on a tile floor) . . .
I don't think I've EVER seen anything shatter into SO many "little" pieces as that thing!!!
If y'got one of these . . . DON'T drop it!!! |

Location: Indiana | I move the slide from finger to finger, depending on what I am doing during the rest of the song. Sometimes even on middle finger. When I play out however it is always in the same place (at home). I'm the bass player in the band.

Location: 6 String Ranch | Only Bonnie can use the middle finger. Sonny Landreth uses the ring. Maybe Duane did too? For electric at big volumes this offers a good way to damp both in front and behind the slide. For acoustic the damping in front of the slide really gets done with the other hand(the right hand) so it's not an issue and Dave's points above about having your three main chording fingers available make a lot of sence.
Been working on a new slide tune today. The Nunwells come in all interior sizes Cliff, next time you're up we can go see him, he's only 10 miles from Mountain House. They have the best tone for acoustics that I've found. |

Location: Flushing, MI | Here's a sample of my slide playing. Scroll down to "Wartime Blues" to hear my slidin' in open G tuning on a Celebrity CS257.
I use either a copper slide, and sometimes heavy glass on my middle finger. I can't make it work on my pinky for some reason. I use standard, open G, and D tunings.

Location: GA USA | You may have seen the post at Big Road Blues, but the concensus over there is that if you're looking for a beginner resonator, you can't go wrong with THIS ONE .
$150.00! My apologies to my very good OFC friend with whom I've been discussing what reso to buy. I know we were gonna work together, but I went ahead and bought a green one. I figure when I upgrade, I can sell this one for $100 and I'm still good.
Looks like only the green and blue are still available. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Yeah, that reso looks pretty good. Gotta take it out in the back yard and drag it around for 3 hours in the dirt and drop it a few times. One or two carefully placed dents on the face and take some 60 grit to where you strum. NOW that will be lookin real fine and will have much mo blooze tone. |

This wasn't EXACTLY what I wanted to start with, but so darned cheap it was close enough for now.
