Does anyone know what model of Ovation John Mclaughlin uses on the album My Goals Beyond? Here is a video of him playing it.

I can't tell by looking at, like some here could, but i remember reading somewhere it was a Balladeer. Check out the second customer review here.

That should be verified though.

Thanks Lanaki!

I have read that it is a Custom Legend 1719-30CM and a Balladeer. I am curious if anyone has a way to know for sure. My Goals Beyond has probably the most beautiful acoustic tone I have ever heard.

I am in the market for a deep bowl ovation without a cut-away. I am thinking maybe a Legend 1717. Does anyone know the difference between the Custom Legend 1719 and the Legend 1717?

Thanks!

Maybe this will help....

Here is another video of John playing the same guitar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBxz3o9e0yw

at 48 seconds you can clearly see that the guitar is a model that has the volume knob located on the top of the body near the fretboard. I could be wrong but I just looked at the Legend 1617 and did not notice a volume knob there in the pictures. Hopefully this helps to narrow down the exact model.

As Cliff said, the 1617 is identifiable from the fret markers and the fact that it has a bound neck. No other model at that time had that combination of features. The nearest current model would be the 1717 Legend from the Traditional series (if they are still available) Failing that it would be a Legend 1777LX . The current Glen Campbell reissue is pretty much identical apart from bowl depth.

I don't know ... but it sure looks a lot like my 1616 classical. And it sounds like a classical.

A classic would have no fret markers, a slot head and a 12 fret body joint.

It's hard to tell but I don't think it's the same guitar in the second video. It appears not to have fingerboard binding, which would make it a 1612 Custom Balladeer. The Custom Balladeers were visually almost identical to the 1617 apart from the binding and the fact they had chrome rather than gold machines. The only real difference was the bracing pattern (X on the C Balladeer, VT on the Legend) and grade of spruce.

As an Ovation endorsee at the time it's perfectly reasonable that McLaughlin would have had several Ovations, and not neccesarily of the same model

For comparison purposes in the 2nd clip Coryell is playing a 1619 Custom Legend

To throw a wrench into this, note that in the first video, the guitar has the same fretboard markers and binding as the guitar that Bobbo just bought. The electronics peg it as late '71 or later.

And he's playing a different guitar in the second video, this time a Custom Balladeer. Full inlays but no binding.....

It was a Deluxe Balladeer, this is an earlier model before the Legend. Late 60s. And it said Deluxe on the headstock front. (which I have seen in other pictures of the same My Goals Beyonf period).

Notice it has binding on the neck but the fretboard markers are different than a Legend or GC model. I have seen a few of these transition models with binding on the neck and Deluxe Balladeer inlays.

2nd video is a Custom Balladeer, and it is late 70s.

Nope, I'm pretty certain the guitar in the first clip is exactly as moody identified it, which is a very early Legend. I'm pretty sure the Deluxe Balladeer was discontined before the introduction of pickups and preamps, and here the volume control can be clearly seen. 2nd clip is definately a 1612.

The CL has inlaid abalone trim around the body, more elaborate fret markers in abalone instead of mother of pearl, abalone instead of mother of pearl in the rosette, pearloid tuner buttons instead of gold and AAA grade spruce instead of AA in the top.

Is 1971 late enough for the guitar to be the Custom Legend 1719-30 CM?

The "Meeting of the Spirits" is much later (Valentine's Day 1979).

I agree: my favorite acoustic tone; What I'd like to know is who and how was it recorded there at Douglas 9 records???
