My Goals Beyond has probably the most beautiful acoustic tone I have ever heard. I am in the market for a deep bowl ovation without a cut-away. I am thinking maybe a Legend 1717. Does anyone know the difference between the Custom Legend 1719 and the Legend 1717? Thanks!

Here is another video of John playing the same guitar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBxz3o9e0yw at 48 seconds you can clearly see that the guitar is a model that has the volume knob located on the top of the body near the fretboard. I could be wrong but I just looked at the Legend 1617 and did not notice a volume knob there in the pictures. Hopefully this helps to narrow down the exact model.

No other model at that time had that combination of features. The nearest current model would be the 1717 Legend from the Traditional series (if they are still available) Failing that it would be a Legend 1777LX . The current Glen Campbell reissue is pretty much identical apart from bowl depth. How can you tell?

It's hard to tell but I don't think it's the same guitar in the second video. It appears not to have fingerboard binding, which would make it a 1612 Custom Balladeer. The Custom Balladeers were visually almost identical to the 1617 apart from the binding and the fact they had chrome rather than gold machines. The only real difference was the bracing pattern (X on the C Balladeer, VT on the Legend) and grade of spruce. As an Ovation endorsee at the time it's perfectly reasonable that McLaughlin would have had several Ovations, and not neccesarily of the same model

(which I have seen in other pictures of the same My Goals Beyonf period). Notice it has binding on the neck but the fretboard markers are different than a Legend or GC model. I have seen a few of these transition models with binding on the neck and Deluxe Balladeer inlays. 2nd video is a Custom Balladeer, and it is late 70s.

I'm pretty sure the Deluxe Balladeer was discontined before the introduction of pickups and preamps, and here the volume control can be clearly seen. 2nd clip is definately a 1612.

I agree: my favorite acoustic tone; What I'd like to know is who and how was it recorded there at Douglas 9 records???
