As some of you know, I currently have slothead No. 43 in my possession while Mark (Elginacres) is vacationing. He even suggested that I gig with it, although I'm not all that comfortable taking any unnecessary risk with his beloved guitar. On the other hand, an opportunity like this is rare indeed. So, if the opportunity was yours, and you had the owner's blessing, would you gig with an original slothead on loan to your care and custody??

Do it.

I've gigged mine a few times (providing I'm familiar with the venue/stage area and was able to provide adequate security), and I've also gigged (with his prior "okay") some of Bill's Boarders that've lived with me.

This is what Ovation's were DESIGNED for.
Leave the fragile furniture to the StoveKnitters.

Besides, I'm fairly certain that the venues that you play are a far cry from neighborhood bars . . .

I'm gonna go the other way.
It's not mine. As careful as anyone could be, bad things can happen out there.
If I'm gonna roll the dice, dispite the favorable odds, I'd better green up & buy one of my own.

I wouldn't do it. You've got better gigging guitars. If you have to (want to) use a slothead for some reason then you should use your own.

I voted yes....For these reasons

1) You have Marks's blessings
2) I believe he gigs with it now
3) You will take the utmost care
4) Provided it is a safe and controlled venue.

But it really comes down to you. Is the event worth the risk you assume?

If he said yes, just play it. Anyone who gives permission for this understands, that dents, dings, wear and tear, are a normal part of gigging. As to major damage, you know in your heart what was caused by your negligence and what's an accident. If it's an accident you don't have to fix it. If it's due to your negligence you owe him.

I would but I'd have to consider if my paranoia would keep me from being able to play. It would have to be in a controllable environment, i.e; no foot traffic or kids, other instruments far enough away, etc.

The Factory can fix anything!

No. There is only 1 original #43, and it belongs to someone else. To the crowd, a Celebrity with those 'weird holes' will look just the same. A good sound man, with a quality pa., can make either sound good, and a crappy pa/soundman won't do it justice anyway.

Great comments, all very valid. The vote is evenly split. Cliff is right, the venue is a very non-hostile worship sanctuary.

If the owner is cool with it, then absolutely! I see no purpose whatsoever in owning an instrument that is so valuable you are afraid to play it where people can enjoy it.

Good... In that case the active praying that nothing happens to #43 would not seem out of place.
I guess if it's that kind of venue I might give it a shot.

1 - Owner says, "go for it."
2 - It was made to be played.
3 - Can't proselytize without performance.
4 - You've got insurance for it. (?)

The vast majority of Stradivarius violins are owned by private collectors who continually loan them out to various symphonies for performances . . .

hmmmmmmmm - two questions I would ask myself before I gigged with it - could I afford to replace it if it got damaged or was stolen and could it be replaced at all?

Voted for "yes" because of no clearer separations.

So, yes, but only if

- you could afford to replace it - even if it 's not replacable in person
- the friendship is strong enough to stand a ruined slothead
- you are the kind of guy who keeps an eye on his properties (Shut up... if that was ambiguous?) and take care for things of others even better than for yours
- it is absolutely necessary.

If any of these points is denied - I wouldn't do it.
Too much of a risk. Even if it is only a liitle scratch - it could grow to a big problem.

the audience would not know the difference. playing the original slothead would not necessarily enhance the sound of the music played. the benefit would only be yours, brad, for being able to play it and for feelin' ever-so-cool on your stool holdin' that baby.

The answer has to be no because it has nothing to do with being able to afford to replace it. It's not an expensive guitar still in production, it's a piece of history. You couldn't replace it. Neither (I assume) would you wish to be the person who had to have a replacement neck/top/whatever put on #43, so that it is no longer an original.
I can't believe anyone would consider it with a guitar not theirs.

Have to agree with Schroeder...can you also picture yourself explaining what went wrong and how it happened and the look on the other guy's face. I wouldn't want to be the other guy either!

Toooo wrapped up in the material world, man!

I say, "You like the WHO? Do a WHO medley and try to smash it after!"

I mean, you only live once, right?
................
Wait!

I thought Brad asked the original question.
Strike that, I take it all back.....
