Because isn't that why we obsess over all this stuff??
And aren't you gig guys always working on something new???

On my own I want to get back and finish The Who's, "Tattoo".
BrianT & I are working on three new ones.
Mrs. Robinson
Nowhere Man
And.... An obscure early British Invasion number that we want to keep under our hats until the next tour.

We took a run at "Mrs. Robinson" quite a while ago and decided we had better leave it alone. "Put it back in the stew pot to cook a while longer", so to speak. Now it seems like we might be able to make it presentable.

I have written a small pile of songs, but have trouble finishing them..I like a strong and beaming ,kind of rumblin`sound, and play therefore close to the nut, high up the neck guitars sound "tiddy"..sigh.. :)

Ooooo.... Looks like we got a Bernie Taupin / Elton John thing going on in the OFC!!!
I hope to hear it at the next tour or maybe on the next "members" disc.

So.....is it hard to write a melody with words that are never more than two syllables? :D

I can't believe that doesn't happen more often around here. Some great players in this group and I can only imagine we have a couple of pretty solid writers to go along with them. And I can't wait to hear this one.

As for me, I recently saw a reunion concert dvd by Loggins & Messina and it just reminded me what solid players those guys were so I'm trying to play a couple of theirs (Pooh Corner, Angry Eyes, Vahevela).

I also like "Pooh Corner" even if some might say it reduces my testosterone level a tick or two. It's somewhere in one of my "to do" books.

Ouch. I'll try not to take that personally, Brad. ;) As for me, it was one of the songs that I always sang to my daughter at bedtime when she was little so I've always wanted to actually be able to play it before she has kids of her own and she tells them that Grandpa's been working on that on for twenty some years and STILL can't play it!

I'm currently learning to play two songs from both extremes (time line-wise). The first is a song that's been around long before I was born, and the second is one that my 14-year old plays constantly on her iPod. Anyway, here they are:

1) "This Guy's In Love With You" (Burt Bacharach / Herb Alpert) ... I think I pretty much got the song in its entirety. I just need to work on the kinks affiliated with my limited guitar playing.

2) "Collide" (Howie Day) ... sounds similar to Matchbox 20's/Rob Thomas' "Push" that I was able to generalize the chord patterns to this song. I think I got most of it, with the exception of the bridge part. I also need to memorize the lyrics, as opposed to just singing "la la la la" to it. :D

re writing words for a tune I wrote a number of years ago. I orginally wrote the music to words someone else wrote and they are really dated. hopefully some comtemporary stuff will help and I do love the melody that I wrote so many moons ago.

After seeing that Todd Rundgren with a Breadwinner pic last week, I started working on "Just One Victory". I like it. It would fit perfectly in a set with Soulshine.

Just got the Ryan Adams CD "Easy Tiger". There are a few candidates on it too. I like playing his song "Magnolia Mountain".

Been tinkering with Operator. I should have the whole Jim Croce lineup done by the time I die.

In front of me on my desk at this very moment . . . two more jazz numbers for our upcoming concert, God Bless the Child (Holliday/Herzog, recorded by Sonny Rollins) and Body and Soul (Green, recorded by John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery).

Recently had 2 great experiences performing solo at a fresh market and a church event. Kind of wet the whistle for more. My first attempt was mostly simple 60's fare (Sam Cooke, Lord Vader and the Penetrators, Buffalo Springfield, CSNY). My next attempt is this Saturday and I'm considering:

Never Been to Spain - TDN
Sailin' Shoes - Little Feat
WS Walcott Medicine Show - The Band
Mississippi Mud - Cavanaugh, Barris
Ain't Misbehavin' - Fats Waller

Since I'm very new to solo performing, I'm working pretty hard on developing my playlist. I find that I gravitate strongly to songs I grew up hearing, ergo the 60's slant. Since I'm hoping to perform with some regularity, I figure I need to pick up some contemporary stuff. Problem is I think most of it is not anything I'd care to learn. About the most contemporary stuff I'm practicing these days is some Five for Fighting (Superman and 100 years).

Performing solo is scary stuff. There is no one to hide behind or to help pick up the slack while you recover. Nope. That bad chord just hangs out there like Dave in a San Fransisco bathhouse.
It's nice to see such a variety of music being played. Seem like not everyone is stuck hip deep in classic rock.
